The department where I work had one of these when I started there. I was driving it down the Florida Turnpike, going 75 with traffic and suddenly had to come to an almost complete stop. I laid on the brakes and actually stalled the motor. I was coasting on the turnpike in Drive with no power steering, so I put in in Neutral, started it up and put it back into Drive. Came very close to needing a new pair of Fruit of the Looms on that one.

Love those Chevy vans! I bought an 83 G10 model in 1994 from a packaging company in Charlotte NC. It was the short version, barn doors in the rear and slider on the side. Best part was it was a 250 I-6 with a three speed manual on the floor from the factory. They said that the engine was seized so I grabbed it for $75 bucks. Turns out the starter was the culprit! Replaced the starter and she ran like a top! Was such a cool van I used it for a while. Then sadly, the motor got tired and I parked it behind my shop and it is now a cool looking parts container. :-( Some day she may see the road again. It is still complete and un-molested for a 39 year old van! No Rust! Just lots Patina and mouse turds!

A place I worked at had an old Chevy van, the only times it got used were to take a 55 gallon drum to get diesel once in a while and get inspected. That one was 3 on the tree and worn out manual steering that kept you awake. You'd be driving, it pulled a little to the left, so you'd kinda have tension to the right. Then it would change it's mind and start pulling to the right, all of a sudden you'd be on the shoulder of the road. 😂 Good times, good times.

My Dad had a1976 van, but it was rear and slider door windows, only. Not a Beauville. Being in northern Ohio, when he bought it at only 5 years old, it had already rusted through the fenders and was “repaired”, followed by additional rust. My parents moved it to New Mexico in 1983 and it never rusted any further. I rebuilt the Q-Jet on that thing at least twice, and replaced the water pump through that slot of a hood once. All day job.

Unfortunately the 2nd one that blew the cold air into the air ducts was failure prone and replaced in the 78 up systems . it had also been obsoleted and deleted from the GM parts book around 1980 which is why i got the van as a gift . The only opening windows were those in the front doors so there was little airflow to cool the interior .

I'm 53. My dad bought a two tone metallic brown and tan beltline '77 Beauville van new after my mom was in an accident in our family's 1970 Mercury Montego 2 door that year. Fast forward to December 1984, when while Christmas shopping, the '77 Beauville was stolen from a parking lot. It was never recovered. That same month in 1984, he bought a red with white insert Beauville van that was the family hauler through about 1992. There were four of us kids, and we travelled all over the U.S. in those two vehicles from our SE Texas home. We were a Beauville van family through and through!

It's great that you post the SPID label because with the VIN we win: C for Chevrolet, G for G Series Van, Y for 350 V8 with four barrel, approx.155 HP, 3 for 1-ton rated van, 6 for Sport Van/Rally Wagon/Suburban (not to be confused with a Chevrolet Suburban SUV), 3 for 1973 model year, U for Lordstown, OH assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Lordstown plant operated from 1966 to 2019 and was the main van plant with Flint, MI and Scarborough Ontario, Canada also producing them during this time. The Lordstown plant was rife with strikes and was often called "Industrial Woodstock" due to the hippie type workers that worked there. Later GM strikes at other plants were often referred to by GM management as "Lordstown Syndrome". Exterior paint is code 514 Crimson Red. It would have been nice if they got AC, RPO code "C60". LOL. The rest of the options on the SPID are self-explanatory. Yes, you have to be observant in the yards. I've found tools and even the proper paperwork I needed for my Trans Am. I had been searching for years for 1979 and 1980 blank warranty folders and I found them in a junkyard car. My mom was working at a place that had both modern computers and yes typewriters, so I had her type up the owner's manual folders just as they would have been done at the dealership when they were new. At that point, my dad had been gone about 20 years, so it was nice to type his name on the one warranty folder like it was probably done in 1980 (although we never had one for some reason, odd, we kept those things). That was a find. Another time I found the "What Is It?" space saver tire brochure in a 1977 Cadillac. It is the same piece for my 1979 Trans Am. But the '77 piece in the Cadillac was about 3 inches from nasty rotten half eaten Chinese food and the car was on an angle in the yard in the mud. I was able to get it, it was clean and undamaged and it now sits in my glovebox of my '79 Trans Am. Another time I found some Craftsman tools, or should I say half of them: half of a nutdriver handle and half of a socket rack. I brought them back to the local Sears when I was a regular there and the guy said, "Where's the other half?" Laughing I said, "In a Olds 307 engine in a junked car in PA". He went to the rack, pulled off a new USA (then) made tool and did the paperwork. I then showed him the half of the socket rack with the word "MAN" only left. He said, "I don't think you're right, but if the new package says lifetime warranty they are yours". Sure enough it did. He did the paperwork at the register, handed me the new tools and said, "Have a good day, see you soon". Unfortunately, that store closed in 2019. My uncle's neighbor who was a manager at Sears from 1953 to 1993 was involved in opening that store in 1973 and the previous two stores that preceded it. I have many tools and items that likely came from all of those Sears stores. You can still get upfit packages/prep packages today on G series vans. For a time, GM also sold an AWD van called the "H Series". Today if you want a "factory" 4WD van, you have the van sent drop shipped from GM to Quigley and they do an OEM approved conversion that keeps the warranty intact. As for upfits inside for tradespeople, Adrian Steel, American Van and others offer upfit packages that can be put into vans like this. GM (as well as Ford and Chrysler) have many "ship through" vendors that will take chassis and upfit it, getting it right off the delivery vehicle. Ambulance chassis are done this way---in the case of Ford they are often drop shipped to the ambulance manufacturer from a Ford dealer like Olathe Ford in Kansas. Ford often calls it "pool vendors". There are many throughout the country that get drop shipments. When I go away for business or to a meeting, we are driven to it, and we're often driven there in a modern version of this van, a newer G Series. While it's changed a bit over the years, they still have many of the same types of options, upfits, seating configurations and so on. Back then if the "shoe fits, wear it". That was GM's motto. 1996 brought the phase-in of the Savana and Express vans we still have today. Those are assembled in Wentzville, MO with some models built at the Navistar plant in Springfield, OH.

I recall looking at a '71 Chevy van for sale at the Moravia, NY car show some years ago. $400 for it with a 400 engine and 300,000 miles. Guy drove it there. I probably should have bought it. It was out of Florida and not rusty. The dealer badges on both sides is a little unusual. Cutaway vans have a conventional chassis to them, at least behind the cab. These vans didn't get a locking column ignition until 1982. While the body panels don't change GM did like to change little things every so often - they changed the dash in 1983 making the 1982 column one year only. By the time mine was made in 1994, they had TBI, electronic controlled transmissions, an airbag, and even 4 wheel antilock brakes.

The unit construction of the Chevy vans is the reason why almost all the box type ambulances in the 1970's and up were built using Ford van chassis. All an ambulance builder had to do was order the ambulance package from Ford and they supplied the driving chassis complete with the cab unit and then you added the walk thru rear body. Something you could not do with Chevy, you had to but a one ton and up truck chassis and cab and add a separate non walk thru body. Those were inconvenient if the driver was called on to lend assistance having to get out and walk around the vehicle that may be in traffic in an emergency when pulled over for a full arrest.

A lot of the ambulances by the 1970s went to the Type I style which was a truck chassis (like a CK Series or an F Series), because they held up better than the van chassis. However, the Type I style truck chassis made the vehicle more expensive so that's why a lot of ambulance/fire departments used the van based (Type II) platform.

Ford went to body on frame in 1975, Chevrolet not until 1996.

First year for the corporate 14 bolt rear axle and, I believe, the last year for points ignitions, which this van also has. I have several square body pickups with the full floater 14 bolt and I've converted the one under my 77 K-35 tow rig to disc brakes. If I'm not mistaken, the 9.5" semi-floating 14 bolt was used under the 454 SS pickups in the early 90s.

In the mid seventies after getting out of the service , I bought a used 66 Chevy van . Straight six , three on the tree , but it was weird because it only had the two front doors and two swing out doors in the rear . Nothing on the passenger side middle . I've never seen another one like this .

The early model 'no doors' are pretty rare and sought after...!

@@ryanshevlin_Holy_Diver_Van Hi Ryan . I didn't know this . I also believe it had a straight front axel on it too . I have one picture of it with me mugging for the camera standing in front of it . I was eventually going to put a small block with turbo 400 in it but then I got hold of a 66 Chevy ll six banger two speed auto . I built a 327 from a wrecked Corvette with auto in the Nova . I have one picture of it with you guessed it , me in front mugging for the camera . Thanks for your info !

I always liked the design of the dodge and chevy vans way more than the econoline. They had more character while the econoline always looked more utilitarian.

Had a business trip to Tulsa a few years back - when I landed at the airport about 10:00 at night and got to where the rental cars were, the only vehicles available were a long line of Econoline passenger vans! Drove that thing around town for about three days and have to say it was actually kind of fun to tool around in - felt like Ralph Kramden driving around Gotham in his city bus……😂

Had the same thing in Louisiana on a business trip a few years back, only an Econoline for our group of nine with luggage. More recently at Louis Armstrong airport, because the person that coordinates our trip couldn't go due to a family emergency, someone else in his office went. They re-rented our vehicles to someone else. Everyone had their cell phones out searching for vehicles (again three SUVs as we have a group of 9 with luggage for close to a week). Somehow after a group of us went to the coordinator of the trip's assistant (who went in his supervisor's place) and mentioned we had "found vehicles at a competitor and they're willing to come here to pick us up" did the Hertz clerk "find" two full size SUVs for us. LOL. Fast fun fact: The one location I called was Enterprise in Metairie, LA. My nephew's 2016 Fusion came through that hub as a rental originally. When my sister first got it, I said, "It's from LA, I know it". When she asked how, I said, "Smells like swamp and wet socks, just like the whole state". She thought I was nuts, until after I was done changing the cabin filter (first piece of evidence) and finding a wadded up old insurance card from Enterprise in Metairie and came in the house to show her did she just shake her head and laugh.

Not sure if you mention it, but the V-drive 4x4 stuff I've seen online sure looks weird.
