Christopher Nolan about Dune: "I think it’s an incredible piece of work. I’ve had the luxury of seeing it a couple times now, and each time I watch it I discover new things, new details to the world. The way in which it’s made is for the big screen. It’s a real pleasure and a real gift to film fans everywhere."

4:38 Fun fact about this iconic shot from Arrival: the fog rolling down the hills is not CGI, and was actually a complete accident. The crew got up early in the morning to get the shot, and saw all these clouds peeking out from beyond the valley, so they just went with it. The result is absolutely stunning.

@CoolHandLuke To each their own. I appreciated that Arrival wasn't another Marvel-type superficial sci-fi movie--lots of action with little substance. I think, among many other things, Denis' ability to telly a story visually is why he is one of the best directors working today. He has mastered 'show not tell' visuals. Theres something so poetic and resonant about his choices of frames; often parting from what you would expect a shot to focus on, and instead, delving in on subtle cues that convey the story. Whether that be a character's hands, a colour, faint wisp of wind or a dance of light; the shots force you deep within the souls of the characters he studies in his films. God I can't wait till lockdown ends here so I can watch Dune in cinemas.
@Tmtrnr22

You put it into words perfectly! I also love about his movies that he always takes his time to tell his story. Many of his movies feel so slow paced in comparison to other movies out there but that’s part of what makes them so special. Combined with what you said it makes his works into experiences.
@anjhap

Agree 100%
@marcodekretser
@marcodekretser 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tmtrnr22 Agreed! I used to think his pacing was akin to TV, but I think his ability to slow a scene down is much more purposeful and crafted than the way TV series slow burn. You can tell in all of his movies how “deeply in love” he is with them. The slow pacing of the scenes guides you to explore the frames and understand the level of depth and care that went into each and every one of them. I mean... who else is going to make a +200m blockbuster and focus on a bee on K’s hand for 10 seconds lol

You know in Dune there is this one frame of Timothée Chalamet when he catches this spying bug that enters his room and he hides behind this ancient tree projection and the aura of that projected light hits the actor's dirty, sage-ish green eyes, and we the audience see it from the bug's pov riding on its antennae, as it makes it's way to the iris.. Like I REALLY wish KZbin had picture comments so that I could show you the EXACT SNAP.. IT'S BEAUTIFUL, I was excited to get that glimpse at the end of this video!

There is something very stark but precise and focused in his images. Extremely beautiful and haunting! Thank you for the powerful video!

Beautiful ! If all you're interested in is pif paf bing bang pow pow and interplanetary wars and the like, forget Denis Villeneuve. If you're impervious to the beauty of landscapes, people and music, forget him too. But I love him and his films!

The only thing I could think of while watching this was "In the final shot of the film of your life, what would you see?"

It always amazes me that he can achieve these incredible shots with little to no motion in the camera. Just simple pans, zooms, and tilts. I strive to be even a fraction of how good he is someday.
