Film: Mami Sami (2008)
Director: Ningthouja Lancha
Mani Sami (2008) burst into the budding Manipuri digital cinema scene by breaking away from the norms of bargain-basement imitation of Hindi cinema. The movie revolves around the character of Tayal (Binita Laishram), a village girl who lost her father early and was brought up by her mother at a tattered floating home located over the vast expands of the scenic Lokatak lake. The movie traces her descent, from a hopeless romantic, into insanity from which she briefly recovered, healed by the love she was previously denied of, but only for the rugged to be pulled under, leaving her in a state of fateful shock. Tayal is an embodiment of the ordinary people made delirious by the violence and terror that engulfs everyday life in Manipur. She is made to regret each of her choices, although the consequences were never of her own’s making.
