I'm italian, and maybe not everyone know that this movie here is very underrated and almost nobody likes it. When I read american reviews I was really surprised by how much the great beauty is loved all over the world, except for italy... Thank you for doing this, very appreciated. I'd also love to see the beauty of Sorrentino's "loro"

@@fabri_gonzalez because it is considered like a bad copy of fellini's work (especially of la dolce vita), but they didn't understand that sorrentino only wanted to homage him and make his own movie.

Paolo Sorrentino is the greatest Italian director of the last two decades. This movie is Sorrentino’s masterpiece and you should watch also the tv series he made( The Young Pope and The New Pope). His movies are the reason why we(Italians) are proud of our Cinematography.

fellini’s films>>>>>>>>>>sorrentino’s films
@olmomecene4 жыл бұрын
I'd actually say that this movie is a mix of la Dolce Vita and 8 1/2... the only similarity shared with la Dolce Vite is the social context and the implicit critique of said society. On the contrary, 8 1/2 is about a man who produced marvelous art and is now completely stuck and without any idea of sort, which is the exact thing that happens to Jep Gambardella in this masterpiece. The key difference to me, and what elevates la Grande Bellezza (I'll say a blasphemy now) even above 8 1/2 is the sacrality used to talk about such a sacred topic: beauty. Fellini was always a bit too casual in his movies, I always felt that a slower pace would have been a benefit and, as much as I love Nino Rota's music, I prefer these wonderful and ominous chants/choruses.

One of the most striking part of the movie is 1:17. Jep says "Do you know who am I?" and the little girl replies back " No one ! " Jep mumbles a bit then accept the fact that she is right. He is no one like the rest of us...

As the child represents innocence and truth. The girl can see Jep’s true self, what he is trying to hide through his festive appearance.

This is exactly what i mean. You can't fool the truth. This is the reason why he stopped the convince her and accept that she is right.

A simply remarkable film, a film that has haunted me since the first viewing. So many layers, such depth of existential questioning and, of course, the sheer beauty of Rome combined perfectly with a unique main character, Jep, who becomes like a camera seeking out the meaning of this life, who finds in splashes of beauty the muse he needs to write another book, after so many years of searching...a wondrous character who is not afraid to question his own assumptions and worth, while downplaying his past literary achievement, and speaking the truth about himself and others. After a film like this, our American 'comic book' movies seem pretty sad.

@@a2zadi I don't know how to explain it so you can understand it but all I can say is that there are some people that enjoy nostalgia more than the present generation in which they are born.This film focuses on those people who see deeper meaning in everything.This is not about that average 9 to 5 job kinda life , its about the things that we didn't do but are still nostalgic about them.Its complicated but it is what it is and one day you will surely connect with this film.
@morellaalmann86944 жыл бұрын
a2zadi I agree with Akshit Gautam’s answer. I think there’s something to be said for those who live in nostalgia. When things aren’t real and in the present, we can imagine them as being perfect in a way nothing that is real could ever be. That’s to say that Jep is such a person- one for whom reality isn’t good enough, and only nostalgia isn’t a disappointment.

@@Mukesh-ot5kp that is the great beauty that inspired him to write the first book. After that he never wrote again. He even mentions during the movie “I was looking for the great beauty”.
