Many interpretations, both stylistically AND meaning-wise. I even heard one interpretation that it was about Jesus. The “joke” was his message of total love, total brotherhood, but the world couldn’t accept his message (“which started the whole world crying”) and some thought he was crazy (“till I started to cry, which started the whole world laughing”). And his message ultimately got him killed (“till I fell out of bed, hurting my head with things that I said”) but his death saved the world and “started the whole world living”.
