To Love Somebody was on the Bee Gees third album titled, "Bee Gees First? " The album was called that because it was theie 1st international selling album Their 1st rwo were only sold in the UK. Bee Gees 1st was released in July of 1967 and Otis Redding died in a small plane crash on December 10, 1967, It's actually a common misconception that the song was written specically for Redding.., so the Bee Gees recotded it themselves following Otis" death. Public records and dates don't back up that story. The Bee Gees recorded To Love Somebody 5 months before Otis Redding died. R.I.P. Otis Redding Maurice Gibb Robin Gibb and Andy Gibb. I'm ancient so I received Bee Gees 1st as a gift in 1967. Every song is AWESOME!!!!! :( They are all so missed! :(

The fact that they're just insanely talented songwriters with 1 hundred songs that they wrote for themselves as well as other artists being in the top 10 and their diversity is why their music has lasted over 7 decades. Their brother Andy Gibb was an amazing singer songwriter as well. He died too soon in 1988 at the age of 30. Mo died in 2003 and Robin in 2012. They are by far the most talented musical family in the history of music. RIP Andy, Mo and Robin.

A lot of people believe (And I used to be one) that this song was written specifically for Otis Redding, and that the BeeGees decided to record after he died. I thought so too until I realized the dates didn't match up to that story. Otis loved the song when he heard it. He mentioned it in an interview or something. He was going to cover it. The BeeGees couldn't have decided to record it after he died. To Love Somebody was one of the songs on the BeeGees first international album called BeeGees 1st. That album was released in mid July in 1967, several months before Otis Redding was killed in a plane crash on Dec. 10, 1967.

This song was written in 1967 for Otis Redding. He died in a plane crash after recording his last song, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay in 1967. I cried for days because I had just bought the 45 record sitting on the dock of the bay and Otis was my favorite Soul singer at the time. Berry said in an interview that this was written for Otis and he thought that it didn't catch on as well in the UK because they weren't ready to hear them sing this type of music, R&B. It was too soulful for them. At the request of Robert Stigwood, the band's manager, Barry and Robin Gibb wrote "To Love Somebody", a soulful ballad in the style of Sam & Dave or The Rascals, for Otis Redding.[7] Redding came to see Barry at the Plaza in New York City one night. Robin claimed that "Otis Redding said he loved our material.
