It's not so much that the harsh conditions helped their spiritual growth. More that once you realise your cosmic nature you need nothing, no ambitions in the ordinary world. Furthermore the rough vibrations of everyday society are not welcomed compared to the sanctity of nature. It was a good choice for the monks.
