It's not even funny how good she is as an all-rounder. Since she's just pure stats and minimal utility, she can pump in healing and damage, allowing everyone else to do their job more. And when... A) The other support is underperforming on healing, B) The DPS are underperforming on securing kills, ...she can easily fill for the role. She's especially a menace in the lower ranks since no one really pays attention to the rest of her team, but in higher ranks she still thrives because *peeling is still hard*, and with Juno being in the meta, along with other squishy characters like Widow, this season is perfectly optimal for the succ. The amount of BS I've managed to get myself into and out of with Moira this season is CRAZY.

For the Splattershot Jr., I think it's also important to get into how the subweapon and special help the weapon be beginner-friendly. In each Splatoon title, the "vanilla" Splattershot Jr. has the Splat Bomb as it's subweapon, which is one of the easier subweapons to get value with. It has a short fuse, can easily kill enemies, deals splash damage, can be rolled and thrown, and paints a lot of territory. Its biggest weakness is that it costs most of an ink tank (which is *also* your ammo for your main weapon). However, as Rory mentioned, the Jr. is also *very* ink efficient with its main weapon and can get several shots off after using a bomb. Other weapon kits with Splat Bombs will need to budget their ink more carefully, but the Jr. has a nice bit of Main-Sub synergy that will help ease new players in. Additionally, every Splatoon title has given the Jr. an easy-to-use defensive special. Splatoon has a very short time-to-kill, so having specials that improve your lifespan is a great tool for beginners. And finally, the Jr. variants get to trend a bit more towards the "specialist" beginner characters. For instance, the Custom Splattershot Junior in each game usually comes with a sub & special designed around finding enemies hidden in the ink.

Hot take: I think the overwatch devs actually did a really good job creating Moira as a beginner friendly hero. Almost every tier list since her release has put her in a solid B tier, and compared to the rest of the cast, has had little controversy aurrounding her kit. Even the few times Moira was considered meta, it was never because she herself was super powerful, but because she could make use of the circumstances surrounding the meta better than most others.

They did a good job if we're talking purely tier lists, but games are far, FAR more than just tier lists - especially team games where individual weaknesses can be somewhat mitigated by other characters (e.g. brig/zen backlines). Her kit is absolutely unconducive to creating good habits, and too often you'll see metal rank moira mains use her as a crutch instead of learning how to position/aim optimally, which typically leads to poor performance on other heroes that don't have the sheer simplicity (both mechanically and positionally) moira does.
@lewyn4kКүн бұрын
I want to add a bit more info about the Splattershot Jr for those interested. In Splat 2, the original Jr had Ink Armor - a core meta support special - and was one of the better weapons with it. It was still generally outclassed by the N-Zap 85, a weapon with a super similar toolkit (a bomb + Armor) but more overall fighting power. Jr would still get picked instead quite often though - it got Armor much more quickly because it had better paint and a cheaper special cost, and bomb spam helped it provide pressure where the main weapon couldn't so much. Also, for a while the H-3 Nozzlenose D was the Armor weapon of choice - and it had a much higher skill floor... but it got nerfed pretty heavily to where it wasn't worth the effort over Zap or Jr anymore. Definitely not the best outcome. Splatoon 3's Jr takes more after Splatoon 1's though, with more limited potential at higher levels of play once more.

Didn't even bring up quadruple bomb on the Splattershot Jr... The higher ink tank designed to help beginners could be used in a unique way at higher level play allowing the Splattershot Jr to be the only weapon able to throw 2 lethal bombs with 1 ink tank, pop special to refill the tank, and throw 2 more, denying a huge amount of space. Just because something has characteristics designed to help new players doesn't mean they have to be useless to experienced players.
@BigPro1123Күн бұрын
100% agree with this. Jr is definitely way harder to use than splattershot which has turned into the beginner weapon imo. Jr has more skill expression than splattershot at high levels. Splattershot is more of a jack of all trades as Jr is more of a support.

There's another angle to the Beginner character no one really talks about: People with Disabilities, and/or Physical/Mental impediments, such as physical deformities, or sensitivity to flashing lights and/or camera speed. There are a group of gamers who, for one reason or another, are unable to perform some of the fast or complex actions that are expected of more able-bodied gamers. Beginner characters like Moira or Yuumi give players like that a chance to actually play these games and feel like they're actually contributing to a match instead of having to fight their various impediments every step of the way. Some people's knee-jerk reactions when things like this are brought up are to say things like "Well, THEY shouldn't play these games" or "These games aren't for THEM" or even "The game shouldn't be balanced around THOSE people". I think that's too much gatekeeping, and I think they should at least be acknowledged in these sorts of conversations because they are often ignored or dismissed so easily.

I really think that good beginner characters should have aspects of their kits that seem unassuming at first but actually develop the more familiar you become at the game and that actually allow them to be viable. I feel like the developers are often scared to implement more complex mechanics to these kind of characters, but all they really do is increase the skill ceiling of these characters, without affecting the skill floor. A perfect example of that would be Mercy from Overwatch. While at first she seems like you very stereotypical beginner friendly healer that doesn't need to aim, have very easy to use and forgiving positioning, an ultimate that is very simple to understand or use, a very consistent easy to manage healing and no damage to distract you, the more you advance with her, the more you start to learn how valuable her damage boost can be and it's actually what makes her keep up and even stand out at higher levels. While Mercy has her designing and balancing issue of her own, I think that when it comes to her skill curve they did an excellent job at making her extremely beginner friendly while giving her a decently high skill ceiling. Moira on the other hand has no depth. Rather than being a hero that eases you into the game, she's the hero you ask you give your friend who never played overwatch so they can have their fun while not knowing anything about the game. I definitely think it's good to have a hero that doesn't require as many mechanical skill, but Moira is forgiving to the point of basically needing so macro skill either, no management of your resources, nothing that you can do better than not die, heal the players who are low, damage the enemy who are near and throw orbs off cooldown. Of course there are still differences between a bronze and gm Moira, but it's just the same things done better, with better positioning, reaction time and target priority. Where as a Bronze Mercy would probably use gardian angel, damage boost and rez completely differently than a gm one, a bronze moira does the same thing but a little worse. I truly think they need to bring more depth to Moira's kit, keep the simple premise of no mechanical skill and a get out of jail free card, but add some more micro management, give her ressource meter something the Moira needs to actively manage and not just a limit so she doesn't heal infinitely, give her grasp utility that gets better the better she manage her resources, make her orbs a bigger part of her healing and damage so she really need to use them thoughtfully. Now Moira is an easy hero, but she doesn't teach any aspect of the game well, especially not ressource and cooldown management that should really be the premise of a scientist like her.

Kensa Jr. isn't really a top tier weapon but it is kind of hilarious. For the unaware, the Bubble Blower special lets you throw out three bubbles that anyone on either side can do damage to. Enemy damage makes them smaller, ally damage makes them bigger and eventually explode, which can one-shot enemies that are too close. Meanwhile, the Torpedo sub weapon can lock onto nearby enemies, and if it does, the "activated" Torpedo can instantly pop a bubble and just nuke the area around it with almost no time for the enemy to react. Combine that with Jr. being a poor combat weapon on its own, the kit basically has two modes: "barely an issue, it just paints the ground a lot" and "THE JR. HAS SPECIAL OH GOD OH FUCK".

Soldier honestly needs a small rework. Losing aimbot as an ult wouldn’t even be a loss as most people who play soldier in higher ranks usually play him due to the aim skill expression you can have. Also his ult is basically just a “come kill me button”. Getting value with tactical visor is actually sometimes just worse than shooting at someone normally. Soldier is basically the only character where you can push the ceiling of tracking based aim to its limit in overwatch, and the amount of aim skill he takes at the ceiling is arguably much more healthy than any other hitscan in the game. I guarantee that every soldier player would be happier if the devs just let him be an aim character and upped his damage on his rifle instead of the other balancing mumbo jumbo they do. He also has smaller bullets than any other hitscan post season 9, but people will still call him the easy option :). He is simple but not easy. He is what I would consider a fundamentals and mechanics character, not a beginner character like Moira is. He is simple to understand, but most people will never understand the mechanical skill he takes the higher you go since most people will never have those mechanics. The tutorial level has done irreversible damage to people’s perception of the character. Also heal station being on a longer cooldown than Suzu lmao.

This in a way does also apply to fighting games. Ryu in many street fighter games is an easy character to get into, an easy all arounder with easy tools like a fireball and a rising uppercut. Many characters have similar things, yet they're all provided in different and more versatile ways. This (usually) puts Ryu on the lower to mid end of the stick. Many other fighting games have similar characters, we sort of define them into the "Shoto" category, named after Ryu himself. Also all of the project moon music caught me off guard LOL

One way to fix Yuumi's passive nature is by making her W a temporary skill. She latches into someone, shields/heals/buffs them and then goes out. In exchange, it has a long CD and her movement speed is increased for a bit after latching off.

Good video. I do want to say though that as a top 500 soldier player who thinks about his balance often he has a below 50% win rate in almost every rank. In fact in bronze and silver his winrate is around 45%. I would also argue what ruined his strength in high rank was nerfing his sprint speed. Every other speed boost in the game still allows players to shoot whatever they are running at, and they are all faster or the same speed as soldier sprint. Also his self heal went from full healing you once per 15 seconds to now healing between 125 and 160 healing (depending on the dps passive) every 18 seconds, and total hp was buffed making burst healing and damage much better than sustained output. There are less than 10 soldier mains in t500 globally. Thats just sad

Since you avoided speaking about fighting games I'd like to give some examples relating to the concepts brought up in your video. The all rounder new player character is usually a "shoto". (Ryu, Ky Kiske, or Terry Bogard.) They tend to have tools for any option (a fireball, shroyuken, tatsu) however, the tools that they have tend to never be best in class. When looking at beginner specialists, grapplers and zoners come to mind. With grapplers (Zangief, Potemkin) being very strong up close and very weak far away and zoners (Guile, Axl Low) being (usually) very weak up close and very strong far away. Similar to the ideas in your video, the specialists tend to make new players form bad habits because playing a specialist means that you have to approach situations very differently than a more well rounded character.

Meanwhile the hammer has a very simple move set that does high damage to monster and monster parts but still has a good skill ceiling as it ask for you to get literally in monster face for best effectiveness which obviously you need skill to get in and stay in monster face without dying in the prosses meanwhile the hammer also having the niche of usually having best part breaking dps.

Age of Empires IV has two begginers "characters" in the form of The English and The French, both hated by the lower elo part of the community for different reasons The English is the one of the two that is S tier in both low and high elo. they are a simple faction for an RTS, with unique defensive bonuses, a low risk army composition and an econonomy that just straight up remove all risk from the game. they have cheaper and stronger farms in a game where controlling the food sources of the map is key, they can just ignore all that interaction and camp in their base farming safely. they have the stronger archers with extra range so they can damage you from a safe distance, their troops are stronger near their own building so pushing into them is hard and their age 3 landmarks options allow you to stabilize the game for free or super charge their eco changing their gameplan in an instant. people hate them because of how common they are and how hard to kill they are. and they are meta in high elo because they are a generalist that can execute any gameplan giving them a lot of flexibility, you may blindpick them into any matchup or map and you will have a good time as long as you know how to exploit their multiple tools The French on the other hand fall of the higher you climb and they are all about of teaching you agression. they have only one gameplan and it is hitting you as fast and as hard as they can with their exelent early game cavalry. people hate them in low elo because their knight have the lower time to kill, being the only knights than can two shoot villagers, so if they get in just for an instant they can get a lot of kills before you can react. the problem with France is that they fall off the longer the game goes and they are dependant on getting early kills to snowball the game, they are good a teaching how to play agressive and go for early kills but the higher you climb the better are people at defending and they struggle; and also you know what to expect when playing against a french player

as a mercy main, she is a beginner character. let's be so fr rn. the most mercy is expected to do is watch her team, assist those who need it and stay alive. think what you meant to say is, she's easy to pick up (which she is!) but hard to master. all you gotta do is click a button, and it does the healing for you, it's not like Ana or hell even Juno where you actually have to aim to get the full advantage of your healing. characters like mercy don't have to rlly worry about this. for the beam is auto-lock.

mercy is a beginner character and that is okay to admit, that does make her mains any less "good" at what they do, nor does it take credit away for any given main's rank on the character either. they're just an easier character to play and pick up, esp now with her tech being built into her kit instead of just being a bug that was exploited.
