I just wanna say, as someone who attempted to make their own game as someone who CAN make the art be careful you don’t burn yourself out or bite off more than you can chew and don’t get too caught up with being a solo developer. To summarize my story, the project got too big, I made hundreds of animations, complex systems, spent untold hours working on characters, creatures, environments, solving tech problems, writing music, doing the UI, literally everything you could think of. Because it was just me, I didn’t consider how insane the amount of work I was putting in was, if I imagine asking a team member to make all the animations I made, or to redo whole sections because I didn’t like X thing, it’d be unreasonable to ask of another person. But because I had something I wanted to make “at any cost” I just kept working, doing more and more until I’d spent hundreds of hours working on something that eventually hit a wall I couldn’t overcome because I took on too much as one person. For me, that was a tech issue, the game was literally too big and started to run poorly, I couldn’t optimize it, the engine could no longer keep up with what I was asking it to do, I couldn’t build new levels, so I shelved it. Because honestly, expecting one person to do everything and become an expert in so many different fields was counter productive. You can accomplish a lot on your own, but it’s okay to ask for help, it’s okay to use placeholder assets and seek out an artist that shares your passion and bring your idea to life together. It’s okay to not be good at everything. Don’t obsess with the myth of a solo developer. Research your options, look for other people that can help make your vision a reality. I’m sharing my story not to discourage you but to say, you can make this game, it’s okay not to be perfect, ask for help, temper your expectations, and be kind to yourself. Don’t expect more from yourself than is reasonable to expect from someone else. You’re human. I hope this works out for you, I’m excited to see what you make! Also no shame in simplifying your art style, some of the most well regarded and influential games don’t have the look and polish of modern AAA games. You can still create a compelling world and story with polygonal characters and simple environments. Don’t use the fact that we have access to more powerful tools lock you into pursuing something outside of what you’re capable of (within a reasonable timeframe), some of the best indie games I’ve played have borderline quake aesthetics. Try and make something with the skills you have RIGHT NOW, even if it’s not perfect you’ll learn a lot and the next thing you make will be even better. Also consider what you NEED to tell your story, not the features that would be nice to have, focus on your MVP. This’ll help both for if you decide to pitch to a publisher, or getting other people involved in your project, or just capturing people’s attention for your game. If I could go back in time and give my younger self advise, it’d be to simplify, I didn’t need to make even a quarter of the animations I did, I didn’t need to make the models nearly as detailed as I did, I didn’t need to focus on stuff on how every little detail worked (I kid you not I made the elevators have functional counter weights and was working on a realistic inspect feature where your character holds and manipulates the object with their hands when the project fell apart) it sounds obvious and silly but one of the best things about being a solo dev can also be one of its worth aspects, you can make ANYTHING you want, but that also means there’s no one to tell you, hey it’s stupid to focus on that what about optimizing object culling, or you’re making too many assets our project file is getting unworkable, no one’s going to see or care about X detail your time could be better spent on Y. Edit: also sorry for the unsolicited advice. If it feels off base totally ignore it. I just wanted to put out a warning for other creatives and indie devs so they don’t have to relive what I experienced. Having my project fall apart and get to the point I had to give up on it was incredibly heart breaking especially when so much of it WAS there and I’d like for other people to avoid some of the pitfalls I stumbled into. At some point I’d like to revive my project, as some technological advancements have actually made certain aspects a lot more attainable and I have a lot more experience than when I started out. I’d have to start from scratch as what remains is pretty much just old demos squirreled away in a few play testers hard drives, old screenshots, and a few assets I couldn’t bring myself to get rid of. I don’t want to discourage anyone from trying to make a game, just say that making SOMETHING, is better than getting stuck in the minutia and never finishing your game.
@aromatic8565 Жыл бұрын
"Don’t obsess with the myth of a solo developer". sounds like you were pursuing fame over just making an enjoyable game. if you burned yourself out of passion, you wouldnt be heartbroken of what you couldn't do, you'd just shelf it, be content and pick it up another time. the real lesson isnt to simplify, its to have the correct goals in mind and prioritize the satisfaction of your passion rather than the end goal.
@NaughtMax Жыл бұрын
@@aromatic8565 weird conclusion to draw when you don’t know me or the game I was working on nor the circumstances that lead to me dropping the project. Assuming I didn’t shelf it and continue working on it is also weird 1 because I did exactly that for over 4 years, occasionally putting it on pause and continuing when I could overcome certain hurdles, and 2 because I literally said I plan to continue working on it/ starting from scratch. I also think your use of the word passion can be pretty toxic for new game devs and artists, first making an assumption as to my motivation and passion and second using it to dismiss many of the very real reasons as to why someone may not finish their game. Insinuating that those unable to finish a game they love simply weren’t passionate enough would be devastating to hear if someone failed at their first attempt to make a game. I want to encourage people to make stuff and to finish stuff as through the process you’ll learn so much and the next thing you’ll make will be way better because of it. Again misinterpreting things “myth of the solo developer” is just me trying to say people don’t HAVE to do everything themselves and to seek help and learn from others when they’re struggling, it has nothing to do with fame or what not, simply advising people not to place the world on their shoulders as they’re creating. Expecting yourself to do the work of 20 people just isn’t fair to put on yourself, that’s the myth. Also I’m unsure if you just completely misread my point about simplifying, or just don’t understand how game dev works? It’s like sculpting a person, you start blocking our the proportions and general forms, then you slowly start defining them over time, you build your sculpt after establishing a strong foundation where if you squinted your eyes you could get the idea of what it’s supposed to be, you wouldn’t just start with a block of clay and immediately jump to sculpting the nose or bicep in the best detail you could achieve, because by the time by the time you got to the feet everything would be kinda out of whack since you didn’t nail down your proportions first. You simply everything first, focus on your MVP, get the game running and playable and then refine as you go once you have what you need and know what requires your attention. And now, even if you hit a road block, holy crap you still made a game! “Prioritizing the satisfaction of your passion” is either wildly assuming I wasn’t passionate or just entirely missing the point, since that’s basically what I’m warning against, especially since I’m this video he was talking about wanting to finish this game. I kept working on things that excited me, kept making more assets, animations, environments, features, music, etc. my passion, instead of a clear and simple goal. When you CAN make anything it’s easy get caught up in polishing and all the little details that excite you instead of focusing on the hard parts that often need to be done first and prioritized. You can build a game with programmer art to see if the core gameplay is engaging and your ideas actually make sense before you jump right in on making that one environment photo real, or getting the IK and animation blending perfect. I can’t imagine anyone that’s made or finished a game would actually disagree with that so I’m going to assume you somehow misinterpreted what I was saying. It honestly pretty standard advice nearly everyone who’s made a game will give new people so idk where you got it twisted but I’ll take accountability for failing to communicate my point. I do want to harp on the ways in which you’re seemingly using “passion” in an equivalent way to when people say poor people just need to work harder or aren’t trying hard enough, or that depressed people just need to be happy and go on a run. Game development is hard and there are countless reasons one may not finish a game, ranging from mental health to lack of time, resources, or skill. Life gets in the way especially when you’re making games as a hobby and I hope you aren’t insinuating that those who can’t finish a game for some reason just wasn’t passionate enough or assume they wanted to make a game for the “wrong reasons” as imo that’s pretty ghoulish especially if you want to encourage more people to make games. I don’t think it’s fair to cast those kinds of judgements on those who want to create but hit a road block they struggle to overcome. I think it’s important to say “hey, that sucks. I’m sorry you weren’t able to make what you wanted to this time around, but look at all the things you learned, here’s what to avoid next time, good luck on your next project, try giving that game another shot after you’ve grown and done other projects.” The reason this is so long is because I think they way you use the term passion is pretty harmful and the way you cast judgments about others motivations is exactly the kind of gate keeping we need to keep far away from game dev, the more people creating and doing their best to improve their skills the better, the more games people finish the better. And making judgments like those you did is counter productive towards encouraging more people to make games and genuinely follow their passion. I’m sure that was not your intention but it’s important to consider how your words may effect new artists and creatives. I think despite how you said what you did, we actually agree that one should make games because they love them and they love the process of making them. That’s an assumption on my part but I hope you find yourself in the same camp. Instead of making a gross assumption on my motivations or goals with my game you could’ve asked. If you wanted to know what problems I encountered or why things played out the way they did I would’ve told you. If you wanted to know if I was actually passionate about my game I would’ve gone in to great detail about all the work I did and how my game worked and they inhuman hours I committed to it. Although, considering the length of my comment and this response, I feel like it should be obvious how important game dev is to me. Yikes… Hope that didn’t come across as too harsh, it just really rustles my jimmies when I imagine a younger me reading your comment after not finishing a game I worked hard on. And I definitely didn’t love having assumptions made about me or my game. In the event that you read all of this, thank you for your time and I hope you have a great day. Hope you make many awesome games you can be proud of.

A bit of advice from a fellow "can't do art" dev A consistent art style is way more important than the art itself (I'd recommend avoiding high fidelity models altogether until you feel comfortable doing so) I tend to lean away from high complexity models or texturing and lean way more into writing some stylised shaders as I am much more comfortable with the maths involved in shaders than I am with actually creating the assets; it's definitely helped me produce higher quality visuals in my own projects

my friend I feel your pain. I have the same problems as you. I start creating, then my brain started playing games with me like how I'm going to handle art, sound and so on and so on. and every time I drop the game, BUT after a long time I decided F it. I will create the core mechanics. instead of a running character, I would have a running cube instead of attack animation I will use particle effect animation (I'm using unreal, so Niagara). and the process start going a little bit smoother. there are too many aspects to concentrate on. AI, UI, damage and hill mechanics, and level design (which can be made with blocks). so good luck, and don't stop because of art. I also would suggest don't waste your time on it. you trying to achieve something in a very short amount of time, that most artists spend years of their lives getting.

As someone who’s done their fair share of research in toon/anime shading, if you really wanna make your character shine, you should consider simplifying your normals to get rid of jagged shadows. You can do that in two main ways: making a simplified proxy mesh and transferring the normals to your actual mesh, or selecting the faces you wanna smooth in edit mode and using alt+n -> smooth vectors a few times I’m oversimplifying a bit, but Royal Skies is a banger youtube channel that might help you as much as it helped me with that stuff. I can relate to this a lot. I've spent years learning all kinds of algorithms, coding styles, the ins and outs of different engines, database structures and all kinds of math in an effort to get better at game development, but yet my biggest problem is art. I have tried so many times to get better at it, but each time I fail. For me, art is like being in school again, writing lines from a board into my copies. I'm sure for some it's enjoyable but I just can't stand it. My biggest accomplishment in regards to art has been a crappy lowpoly sword, and two eskimo characters I made also in low poly. I was pretty happy with the characters, but then came the weight painting to be able to animate them and I practically gave up. Perhaps I'll join you on this journey and finally force myself to learn art, but maybe not. I wish you the best of luck, I'll be subscribing to follow along.

I’m excited for the future and I like the concept so far. Although, I am a little scared about projects like this. So many devs on youtube have to share their failed projects and I want this to succeed. Take your time, and always do what is best for you. ❤

Great devlog. Sculpting part is so relatable. I used to struggle doing art for my games in the past. Best advise I can give is just keep creating models until you feel like they are good enough. But as you grow your skills you will find more and more problems in your art. So good luck with that. If you really want improve your art skills I recommend studying anatomy and doing speed models(in about 30min-1hour) every day. For environment I recommend creating some procedural generator if you good with math.
