What this drama made me realize is how corrupt the Qing dynasty -- specifically, the royal family -- was by the late 19th century. I know that their riches came from the taxes that the people paid and from their landholdings. But this drama also brought forth the fact that even minor royals such as the prince essentially behaved like mafia bosses and bled rich commoners dry of their money, all done under threat and using thug-like characters like Du Mingli who carried out their dirty work for them and who were also under fear of punishment by torture and death by their boss. I don't know where I thought the riches of the royals and nobility really came from. Fairy tales kind of made it easy to assume that kings and queens, princes and princesses, are automatically rich. So to learn that the Chinese royals and nobility also invested their money and made use of the investment schemes prevalent during that time (kind of like the money market funds and certificates of deposit of today) and did money-laundering as well surprised me and really made me see how they are really very much like the ordinary people of today in terms of wanting to see their money grow and being very much into capitalistic ways.
