In this video, Warwick shows you how he teaches a horse to back up. He goes on to stress that the back-up I the basics of anything that you will do with a horse with two reins, and how the biggest benefit of the back-up is to teach a horse how to rock their weight back.
He also stresses that this is the basic that you need to have if your horse ever gets uptight while out trail riding and there's no room to bend them around.
If you like these short KZbin videos, then you will LOVE the online video library where all of the full-length training videos are housed. Warwick has hundreds of full-length training videos filmed with REAL horses, REAL people, REAL problems in REAL time with no edits or ads. The online video library is the best way to follow along with Warwick's process!

Love your videos! Just got back into horses after a 17 year hiatus by adopting a TWH. He had a lot of anxiety and not really great brakes. He's had some crap riders and not nice people in his past. Your videos have helped so much! It's been 6 months with him now and we are finally clicking! 💕 We have brakes, I can adjust speed with my seat, stands firm for me to uncoordinatedly get on, he's so much more relaxed! Much of that is due to very clear communication thanks to your videos! THANK YOU!

I like how you explain all those details. Very interesting and I feel I learn a lot through your videos. Backing up is a little problematic with my horse. It always feels forced. But he’s over 21 years old now and I have only had him for 2 years. Not so easy to do things differently than the way we are used to.

When I get on a horse, I put reins and mane in my left hand and the right hand on the off side of the swell like Warwick did here. I have never seen anyone else do this! I am wondering if Warwick has a reason for this? I do it because I think it is better for the horse's withers.

Great explanation, and I love the moment at about 5:18 where Bundy steps up like he can sense Warwick is ready to get back on! What an awesome team

Excellent information on teaching a horse with no prior bad habits regarding the bit. More challenging if you've got an ex racehorse who has already been taught to keep galloping despite firm rein pressure. They can be re-educated to be light to the rein (at least some can), but you'll go through a lot more resistance

This is similar to the concept of opening and closing "doors" for the horse with the help of the reins. One of my former riding instructors taught me this and it helped me a lot, because it is exactly what you explained here: we don't pull the horse, we offer them a direction softly and the choose to go there which makes everything more smooth. Thanks for the video 🌻

👋 you talked about that topic two or three month ago. This video scratches it a little deeper. So if I got it right (English is not my best) Once he steers good on one rein, you teach him to backup on two - no pulling, just waiting 😬 then at walk/trot/loop you teach him to stop by doing the same as you’d wish to backup from stand still. Is it correct (stupid French they don’t understand anything!) Thanks Warwick- I just wanted to make sure I got it right! Best from 🧀 and 🍷 country where people speak English like a “lost Spanish cow” in the bush

Good advice. A good back up is so important. It’s also very helpful on trail and when riding around other horses….adds to maneuverability and safety.

Backing up has been such a useful tool. It took alot of groundwork and now is a wonderful part of our toolkit, we have a lovely soft and even cadence to it and something I'm pretty proud of.

Thank you Warwick! I’m training a green horse who sat in the pasture for 8 yrs and a late 3 yr old. We are starting from scratch on both so this will be invaluable to their training! I appreciate all your insight and the time you take to share information on these videos-they are amazing! Thank you also for your podcasts. I have listened (several times each) to your visits with Josh Nichol and Jim Masterson. You do a fantastic job drawing out the details of what makes them so effective in what they do. I love how congruent their work and philosophies are to yours! Have a great week😊
