I live in South Texas where it is always humid and gets to 104 degrees in the summer , would the black plastic harm my tomato and pepper plants with too much heat?
@PlantSmartLivingNOW4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bee, i’m not really sure how much tomatoes and pepper plants would endure there in your zone, but you could do a experiment in your garden and plant some using the black plastic and plants not using the black plastic and see if there’s a benefit to it. I hope you have a bountiful garden season!

I worked among the migrant workers in South Florida picking tomatoes, green peppers and squash in 1977. All our fields were mounds about 6 inches tall 4 foot wide, covered in black plastic and ran the course of the fields. Maybe one weed coming up in the holes that were punched with poles for the seedlings, in the entire row. It was sweltering hot, but The crops were always bountiful.

Hi, Thanks for your video. Is this just 6 mil plastic from HD/Lowes? Any toxicity you know of?

Those rolls are mostly made of PE (polyethylene). Do NOT use these in the garden since they break down and leach into your soil and plants. PE plastic is a short term/temporary plastic and will not last long either, since it breaks down in the sun. Again, once broken down, it will get into your soil and plants. Not good.

my employer's dept of agriculture has a community garden where we can purchase a 25 x 25 plot. I purchased one in 2015 and it was epic fail, no harvest. I am trying again this year using black plastic mulch. I hope to get harvest. great video!

Know of anyone using old ag bags for mulching? Multi layered, black on bottom, white on top. Farmers having problems getting rid of it.

You can fill with soil, set them upright and grow all kinds of stuff in them. Or close after filling with soil, lay down and Poke holes and stick in plants.
