I love how you use a simple Home Depot tarp that most people have access to in a crunch. It always seems people making tarp videos use high end Sporting good store, perfect square tarps. I like the method and your use of the windshield sun reflector as a cheap pad. You are using materials people can get at the Walmart cheaply unlike the other vid makers who use stuff average people don't have ready access to. Thank you.

This summer I've been learning about knots, cordage, and tarp shelter. However, I am on a tight budget and wanted to learn with a budget mesh tarp, such as the one used here. In particular, how to make a diamond-plow shelter with or without trees using a rectangular tarp. So thank you for fully illustrating it.

Yes. The Plow Point is a great design. I set up a 6' X. 8' tarp to test during a recent windy rain storm. It set up in about two minutes, and kept me warm and dry. I was pleasantly surprised. For those without cam jam's, taught line hitches work well.

I learned a different 3-point tarp configuration that gives you a floor and a door. You probably already know about but it's really very nifty!! The side can be opened up to create a nice overhang to sit under during the day. But it all seals up completely when needed.

James, I've watched this several times. Interestingly, using exactly the same configuration for a Diamond Shelter set-up & replacing the polytarp with a canvas painer's drop cloth ; using natural rope/cordage & a rustic pole, I've have set-up & camped at historic Pre-1840 Rendezvous events.

@@JugglesGrenades Excellent! Sounds like a great place to camp out. This tarp set up can of course be scaled up to whatever size you need. However, a square tarp is easier to set up in various configurations. I just used this size in the video because they are cheap and readily available and it is the kind I recommend for my Phase 1 classes.

If you don’t have a tarp clip you can run a long from the base of the back stake along the ground staking it down flush with the ground folding the excess tarp under the line then using a stake at the corner grommet. This actually isn’t a bad idea to do anytime with a plow point as that fold over provides a good weather seal. A basic plow point should always be the beginning of your survival shelter, but the key to survival bits to always work towards improving your living conditions. Otherwise your just camping and not even in a simulated survival situation
