He’s trying to appear like he’s possessed with the eyes rolling into his head. I love it. Believe it or not, that is trademark Layne Staley. He does that in several other Alice videos. In addition to this one here Them Bones, he does the eye roll in: Grind video, 1995 No Excuses video, 1994 Angry Chair video, 1992 Not only did he do it in videos, he also did it live. I saw Alice with Layne in 1991 at Red Rocks, and again in 1993 at Fiddlers Green, both venues are in Colorado. I do not recall him doing the eye roll in 1991, which was before the Dirt record came out, but he did it on 3 separate occasions when I saw them in 1993. I recall him doing it during the songs Junkhead, Godsmack, and Dam That River. He may have done it in more songs during this show, but I only noticed during the 3 I just mentioned. Go watch the 3 videos, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Make sure you watch them all the way thru. I’m so happy that you noticed and mentioned it. I’ve been waiting for someone other than me to notice the Layne eye roll, and mention it during a reaction!!!! You’re my new BFF!!!!!!!

Alice in Chains signed to Columbia Records in 1989, their manager was Susan Silver who was also the girlfriend (later wife) of Chris Cornell and manager for Soundgarden, The U-Men and other Seattle-based bands. She also co-owns The Crocodile club in Seattle. Fun fact, she also introduced Nirvana to an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles who then introduced them to the David Geffen Company. Anyway, I remember when Columbia released the first Alice in Chains single in 1990, "We Die Young". The song was based upon guitarist Cantrell noticing young drug dealers on Seattle street corners while he rode the bus. This concludes today's lesson.

Junkhead especially live is something you should hear. In 2020 too MOPOP did their founders awards and honored Alice in Chains and there was a lot of great AIC covers done. Some of their newer stuff too like Phantom Limb. There is Right Turn too that featured Mark Arm from Mudhoney and Chris Cornell besides both Jerry and Layne singing on the track. Jerry has a few solo albums as well. Actually just had one released recently and was just on tour. AIC was just on tour too.
