It always gives me a strange sense of comfort when Mark is able to so enthusiastically assemble a long list of great films from a given year and I've never even heard of most of them. People are so quick to dismiss 'cinema' when 99% of the time, they're only really talking about Hollywood - there's an entire spectrum of other forms of cinema waiting for us to discover.
@Tangerinian
@Tangerinian 10 ай бұрын
When people say "they dont make good movies anymore" the problem is more to do with how accessible the good movies are. Marks trying to use his long list to prove that there are still great films being made, but almost none of them would have played at theatres anywhere near me. There not that long ago were great, artistic movies being made that would play at any cinema, and you could talk with people and they'd be aware of them, even if they weren't that into film. Now you have to search them out, and it's a much more niche thing.

I mean that's just because of streaming, so many films have a limited cinema release and go direct to streaming meaning they have less of a splash. Yet still hardly anyone I know has seen How to Blow up a Pipeline despite that being on Netflix for months and lots of people I know having that streaming service. Idk how to solve that issue but the films are easy to find if you look

Watched Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives back to back recently and both went directly to the top of my best of the year list. The performances in both were just so pure and authentic in both and both felt almost like watching a documentary and it was for that authenticity that they both hit me so hard. Past lives had me bawling in the final scene. Such a fantastic year.

Godzilla : Minus One was magnificent. Acting, story, cinematography. My runner up was Murder in Venice. As above and took Poirot in an interesting direction - loved it. Special mention to Puss in Boots - Last wish was great and let the character grow with his audience. A great film that I enjoyed watching with my teen son and he recommended it as one to watch together in the cinema. What’s better than that? Well, we ended the year watching Godzilla together- again, he recommended it and he was absolutely correct on both.

Mark is so right! There has never been a time when we get so much creative and amazing films as much as now! In the last few years post covid there have been great number of interesting films! People don't watch them and complain just by looking at some big names. Even the award season movies are so much variety and diverse in every way! Just look at last year's Oscar noms, every movie is different from other and they are all so good! And numerous others which don't even make the final lists!

You're absolutely right, there are so many fantastic films coming out. There are more of them than ever and the abundance of choice means a lot slip through the net. The people complaining about it tend to be the Back In My Day sect, who've convinced themselves every single film that came out in the '70s was a masterpiece. There was a huge amount of rubbish in the past, too, but that just doesn't suit their agenda.

Hard disagree on dismissing Air! So all I know is I was at first worried about making my wife go see this with me - then after the first montage we were both hooked. Then I found out simultaneously, without prior communication, all our gen X married friends went out to see it too. Like a sirens song it called out to us, and we responded, and we were rewarded. Just a shoe? Was the starter jacket just a jacket? Was Pac-Man just a game!? No! It part of who we were, it was us, and Air gave us a glimpse into why it was like that

The thing is, most of the films Mark lists are hard to see if you’re in the provinces. I had to get Eo and Enys Men on Blu-ray. It takes dedication to see them. Most people just watch mainstream Hollywood films, which is why they think it was a crap year other than Barbie, Oppenheimer, Mission Impossible and a couple of others.

I agree that there has been so many good films this year and I will happily go and see all the films in Marks Top 5. However, the blockbusters that will keep cinemas open and get the majority of people into cinemas, have been awful. Marvel, DC and the big studios have forgotten what film is there for….. it’s to entertain and give people what they want, do that and people will go back.

@@Blunders1000 I think technically UK wide release is in 3 weeks but I saw in in Liverpool on Boxing Day and it’s a 2023 release on paper. I always go by the ‘official’ release, as in the year that will appear in brackets after the title in most contexts as it just feels less ambiguous in the long run. Some of my favourite films I saw newly released in cinemas this year were retroactively added to my 2022 and 2021 lists for this reason.

I’m the grandson of one of the 669 saved by Winton. I as well as my siblings, father, aunts and cousins, all owe our lives to Mr Winton. We were invited to a premiere of the film and recognized as a few of the roughly 6,000 people on earth today who are alive because of the heroic actions the film depicts. I broke into tears at the end of the film because of the overwhelming gravity of the moment: I had just watched a film about a man whose actions, recognized and honored by that film, are the reason I am able to sit in my seat and watch that film. This once in a lifetime experience was one of if not the most emotionally impactful/resonant moment of my life. Thank you to everyone behind One Life.

Rotting in the Sun =10. Till, Napoleon and I was pleasantly surprised by Barbie and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem - I had very low expectations for both and was actually shocked by how good they were. The major disappointment of the year was Chevalier. I was really looking forward to this film about the black musical genius who was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart but it had TV soap opera production values that didn't look or feel good on the big screen. Of the older films I saw this year I was really disappointed by Tokyo Story. It's supposed to be one of the greatest films of all time but I thought that the direction was flat and dull and some of the acting and editing were poor as well - maybe it's just not worn well over the years. On the other hand my standout discovery of the year was Capernaum - a beautifully written and directed story of love & compassion in the midst of sometimes harrowing abuse and featuring some outstanding and naturalistic acting, not least from the child actor who plays the boy at the centre of the film - wonderful.

My new movie viewing has been very limited, and it's mostly stuff I can watch with the girls, but from the ones I've seen so far my top five are: 1. Across the Spider-Verse 2. Barbie 3. Are you There God? It's Me, Margaret 4. Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 5. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Fortunately, with such a small sample size I can say I at least enjoyed everything I've seen. One treat that didn't make my top five was Mario. It had a lot of nostalgia for me, but what really made it special was the girls fell in love with it. The four year old even went as Peach for Halloween. So something that would have likely been one and done for me has become something I can share with the young ones. They also loved Across the Spider-Verse and Mutant Mayhem. 🙂

I think maybe the comments about cinema not being the same is more to do with the experience. The smaller cinemas that used to show films that weren't considered mainstream have to show the big blockbusters so many times a day to make money. This means it's so much harder to find the smaller film locally, unless you can drive or have decent public transport(ha ha). Our Curzon changed to odeon a number of years ago, but for the first few years, it did show the more unusual films. Now , when they do, they're normally at silly times. It has managed to stay open though despite a Cineworld opening which is very pleasing given its a great art deco building. Also, people have really forgotten how to behave in a cinema. I last went just before the pandemic and myself and 3 other people had to complain about a 3 'viewers' who did nothing but talk very loudly, play games and music on their phones and move and kick the seats. They weren't young either. Eventually, they got tossed out but it has put me off going to see a lot of films. May try and brave it again soon. 🤫

I have not seen many feature films this year as I am trying to avoid the bad ones. I have a top 3! 1) Ferrari, 2) Blackberry and 3) Champions. Need to see Godzilla Minus One and Boy and the Heron.

Yes many of those that didn’t make the top 5 and those that did (some of them I haven’t yet seen) are top notch films. I can’t disagree with their inclusion. But excluding Spider-Verse 2 I just can’t fathom. The technical craft of that movie - its imagery, the characterisation, the story, the soundtrack, the humour. The. Entertainment. It elevated cinema and animation to a level where other films have a very long way to catch up. Yes the others are all good/great films but are any of them new like Across the Spiderverse? Do they push cinema to new levels, pack in so much attention to detail or tell a compelling story through art? I really dont 🎉think they do. If it’s overlooked for Oscar recognition (which it will be… other than best animated and visual effects show-ins) then I feel there is something fundamentally flawed in modern day critique when a masterpiece like this is overlooked for less satisfying cinema.

Hi, Mark hope you had a nice Christmas. I've been a big fan since the channel 4 documentaries (Scream and Scream Again, On the Edge of Blade Runner and Alien Evolution) so thanks for that. 👍 About the bad list you forgot The Expendables 4, the worst and laziest of the series. Have a great 2024 (Simon too) and may the reviews continue.🍾🎉

Interesting comments about the ant man movie. I’ve given up on superhero movies, the last marvel movie I’ve watched was infinity war. I’ve also given up on what I call the franchise movies i.e. terminator, Jurassic Park, Alien etc. I’m 70 years old, perhaps the above movies aren’t meant for me 😊

Zone of Interest is easily my pick for the film of year and possibly of the entire decade so far. Such a visually compelling and thought provoking film that is fully ingrained in my mind even after just one viewing.

Zone of Interest played at London Film Festival, which is where I saw it. But isn't out widely until start of Feb. Which is why it wouldn't be in my list for 2023, because this isn't 'Nam, there are rules. but it would have been #1.

Am I the only one that thought Barbie was completely overrated. The storyline felt rushed and lacked depth. The jokes weren't particularly funny either.. I don't think it will age well.

@@tlongie6055 Because independent cinema has always struggled to find an audience. Very rarely do they make any money or get a proper wide release. Watch and read about films critics are seeing rn, and keep an eye on your local cinema as these films usually have a small window in which to see them
