Hello I’m relatively new to figure collecting but have done a lot of research. Generally what company will you recommend if the only priority is the quality excluding price and stuff. Also what separate a good figure from a mid figure besides looks and price.

Speaking of expensive shipping to Canada, I know Amazon JP uses DHL as well, but their prices for shipping was always pretty good even despite that. But now I'm seeing a very aggressive increase in shipping. Figures that would cost 2000-3000yen for shipping are now costing 5000-6000 yen. And that's before the import fee. At least they charge you import before you pay for it. Avoiding a surprise nasty fee before you can even get your package is a big deal for me. But I really, really hope shipping comes back down to earth. These absurd gas prices sure aren't helping things.

the grading system on amiami for preowned is amazing, you get figures in very good shape depending on the grade and i think some were never opened with the exception of damaged box or what not. when preordering figures, try to avoid placing orders that come in at the same time in the same month because your wallet will take a beating. So my advice is to spread it out as best as you can. last but not least save, save, save your money so that you won’t be hit as hard when the preorder comes in and then they charge you.

Totally agree on the pre owned section of amiami I've spent alot of money on there, and a good portion of those purchases were impulse buys, now I avoid it like the plague. I've focused mostly on pre ordering arknights figures now since I love arknights one of my favorite games of all time. I've also been focusing on obtaining all the yuru camp figures from Wing they are amazing figures.

Make up brushes are great for dusting figures! Especially those with smaller details, just buy a new set, don't use used lmao. Also a hand steamer for wall scrolls I think would be best. I'm always hesitant to iron anything in fear of burning or plastic particles melting.

About the rise of the prices, i read on some hobby forum that it is related to the rise of oil price as the plastic that's been use are the byproduct of the said oil industries. As far as i remembered, it rose since circa 2015. And suddenly the prices jumped around 2017-2018. I used to buy robot damashii line from tamashii jp. It used to be an affordable figure even the limited tamashii one where you have to ordered it from their website. Now it became the 2nd most expensive line from tamashii jp after the metal build line. It even beat the prices of the regular hot toys!

I agree, PopUp Parade is a hit and or miss these days. Their prototype looks so nice and then the actual figure itself will be completely different. Quality control gone from good to meh. A good example would be the Miku YYB Type Ver. PopUp Parade figure.

Top Brands for me are also Alter, Good Smile and definitely Flare and wouldn't say I had bad brands, 2-3 hit or miss brands maybe. Hope that you get other shipping options back soon, DHL prices are nuts, and thanks for the Q&A, especially the Taiga story was really interesting.

Yeah, my "theme" tends to be "girls with guns / swords / misc. weapons"... MFC stats FTW... Other than that, I love putting together themed shelves; series of course, but also wafuku / kimono shelves, fantasy or sci fi shelves, and yes, the "cultured" shelves.... I currently have the Shubuya Scramble Megumin w/ Klee for an "EXPLOSION!" display, so cute together... Looking forward to that GSC Okita (shipped over the weekend)...

I wouldn't recommend opening a p.o. box. I feel like a figure collection is something very personal and if you recieve stuff you're not really interested in, you are basically collecting F-tier stuff that takes up space. If anything you probably need a wishlist or something so people get you stuff you actually want. I see the appeal though, seeing your figure in a video with awesome close up shots haha

Always been so worried about the deadline date on pre order figures, so that amiami pre-owned section seems like a lifesaver so I don't have to get a heart attack everytime... That said I also just recently found a local figure store that's partnering with GSC and I don't need to worry about shipping cost there so, yeah. Lmao. I talked to my insurance agent long and hard about how figures(including a super expensive resin) should be insured. It turned out to be more or less "general" homeowner insurance unless I want additional protection from accidental breakage or something. Don't need to specifically buy collector type insurance for them as there is a reasonable market and the value aren't that high individually. Well, the resin is sort of in the zone but... individually notarization is rather difficult and it is only barely in there. My figure is like... half my insurance policy at this point. The other half being 15% computers and 25% other weeb stuff(blu ray, manga, etc) and only 10% furniture and clothing... PRIORITIES I stopped browsing pre-owned on amiami just recently. I don't really impulse buy figures, I tend to look up character I like and what figure are released for them and then hunt specifically for the ones I want. I have more or less gotten all the ones I wanted now, with only a few fringe ones left that I can't quite justify for one reason or another. The last set of pre-owned I bought are probably the stronger racing trio (nero, saber, rin). Unless I happen upon an old anime that I take a liking to (since any new ones I more or less follow and would order as the figure release nowadays), it's unlikely that I'd be using the pre-owned section much more. Now I only have gaping holes for character I like that doesn't have any figure that do them justice.... There are only three of those, fortunately (not counting character from more recent anime that haven't had one yet but probably will)

I have a few, but they are solid quality. A bit plain, imo, and I think they are overpriced, but the quality of the figs is good. If you like the pics of a figure by them, you'll usually be happy with what you get!

For me, Estream is currently the best. Plus, due to so many other figure companies raising their prices, Estream is seeming less overpriced in comparison lately... until they raise their prices too. I am also loving recent figures I received from Mimeyoi, Wings, Hobby Max, Flare, GSC, and Alter of course. There are probably others I'm forgetting. I have been overall really pleased with the figures I've received lately. Either these companies are getting better or I am getting better at choosing what to buy. :)
