In this video Christian looks at the Mix Pre 10 mkii by ‪@sounddev‬ (sound devices) a pair of RME solutions and a ‪@TrinnovAudio‬ system to make up for a truly unique set up in his newly refurbished shed. We've missed the shed!
Do you have any audio solutions that may surprise us?

Many of those analog mixers/interfaces (tascam models)have sd cards recorders on them. I’m not suggesting them , I’m just pointing out that it’s a common option on those types of interfaces. I’ve never saw the need for them because I have soundforge set up to record everything ,all the time , separate from my daw. I even have it multitracked, which most sd card options don’t allow for. Either way it’s a good idea to record everything all the time.

ANYTHING from Sound Devices is primo! Great video of the shed... and good to see that you're fully back in the saddle again. I get the ADHD diagnosis... it's been a big part of my life for nearly 68 years. When I went through therapy, then later hypnosis therapy, it seemed to clear up quite a bit. I'm currently working to overcome my 'paralysis of analysis' fears of composing. Life constantly provides us with a wonderful series of things to work on within ourselves. Cheers to you, Christian!

Very nice. Thought to consider: Add a Dante card to the Trinnov, exchange the Digiface for a Digiface Dante, and you can avoid the conversion step with the RME by going direct Dante into the Trinnov. Additionally, this allows you to add more Dante devices (Example: a TC Electronic Clarity for analysis) at any time by just plugging into the Digiface. This would have zero impact on your input stage, but would open up your output configuration to be almost limitless. Thanks for the video!

Good call! I've been using Sound Devices units for remote & on-set recorders on and off for almost 20 years (I don't own any, always borrowed or rented). And not to brag, but I've been wondering why pro composers ignore portable recorders as audio interfaces for MANY years, especially the last few years. So happy you're settled into the shed again.

Reminds me of people thinking that ‘clean’ space has no character and personality. On the contrary it shows plenty of character-it's just that some of us doesn't need colourful walls and tons of pictures and things, but the opposite makes us calmer and more relaxed. In that you'll find a lot of character and personality.

AD(H)D - One of the most inappropriately named of human conditions. If anything, we have too much attention. We create chaos because we pay attention to too many things all at once and want to explore it all. Simplifying definately helps. I am fifty years old and had barely picked up an instrument in my life before last year, when I discovered what a midi keyboard is and what it can do. As a newcomer to electronic music production, VSTs and DAWs and hardware, it was easy to get lost in the complexity of it all and lose sight of the playing around with music. It started coming together after I stripped it all back, unsubscribed from the barrage of software publisher emails, figured out I don't have to use all the things on the DAW, resisited the urge to tweek every instrument, envelope, parameter and filter on every sound, and started noodling. I'm still subscribed here though - even although I'm a few levels down in knowledge and experience from most of yous in the comments - cos some of this content will trickle down and help me develop, I hope - and it's entertaining to watch and hear: I'd happily view a video of the pen collection too.

I used the sound devices recorders on location sound recording for a reality TV show I recently worked on. No matter what I aimed the mic at (Samken CS2), it sounded amazing. Steak in a pan? Sounds great. Kids playing soccer. Sounds great? Really loud sounds? Sounds huge (thanks 32 bit). Everytime I got back to studio stuff sounded better than I heard in my headphones on set. Their pre-amps sound great at everything I've used it on location with, so it doesn't surprise me that they would sound amazing in a studio setting. Great Find Christian!

Not at all surprised by your choice, but happy to hear about it! I've been using MixPre 10T Mk1 for years - both as a AD/DA interface in the studio and as my go-to field recorder (to pristinely capture classical concerts for the most part). The choice was clear as this was the only field recorder on the market at the time featuring analog limiters before the conversion (I believe that it doesn't matter that much anymore with the 32-bit resolution of the Mk2 model, though). It never ceases to amaze me how transparent and low-noise the preamps are. I bet even better with this Mk2! - Eero

I get that you like the sound of MixPre 10 preamps but I guess I'm just wondering why it's preferable for you to use two interfaces as an aggregate device rather than a single RME UFX II or UFX III. I would imagine that as a film composer your sessions are heavy with effects and virtual instruments, and that overdubbing would require an interface that can deliver minimal round-trip latency under load. This is not the first characteristic that comes to mind when I think of aggregate audio devices in MacOS. Sure, you'd have to buy some external preamps to reach 10 but that seems doable. Of course, the RME UFX interfaces have inbuilt all-channel recording and rock-solid reliability so you'd not be sacrificing that.

Well shoot.. it's good to know that a couple years ago when I sold my MixPre 10 to get the MixPre 3 MK2 I chose wisely. I didnt need 10 inputs.. 3 was plenty for me, but the internal guts are the same. I also bought the RME AID 2 Pro for my desktop.. at $2500 it's a ridiculous amount of money for a hobbyist who makes no money on any of it.. but 32bit and high end in and out.. should last me a life time.. I've always been a buy once cry once sort of person.. or at least I try to be. I prefer to spend more on quality high end and know its rock solid than buy cheap and have issues with various aspects of the gear/equipment/etc.

Lovely simplified set up Christian, you've inspired me once again to maybe look at reducing my own clutter. One thing I would love to know how you are going to solve (to the best of my knowledge) is Cubase unlike Logic cannot accept two different audio interfaces for i/p and o/p. Please let me know how you solve this if you do, as being a long time logic user myself and switching to Nuendo a couple of years ago that is one feature I massively miss from Logic. (please not the dreaded aggregate solution :) Cheers.

I'll be interested to see how you setup your separate interface IO with Cubase since it only allows one interface for both inputs and outputs. An aggregate device is the only solution I've been able to find, but the reliability of an aggregate device in cubase has been somewhat bothersome.

And I'm draging my RME UFX everywhere and it's a bit bulky and not built for that. Sound devices is much robust and durable. Anyway, could you please walk us through your Doepfer controller? Can you compare it's key feel with something like Roland RD series, or Yamaha Motif. Gorgeous room. And great to see a Sound Devices MixPre unit getting love - if it weren’t for the higher latency, I’d still be using my gen 1 MixPre-6 as my primary interface. Did you create an aggregated audio device through the OS or with Rouge Amoeba’s Loopback to make the Digiface and MixPre work together?

How much storage has that macbook got?! (Surely the cost is ridiculous) The entire spitfire orchestra plugin series doesn’t even fit on my 4TB nvme second internal windows drive and my windows i9 laptop cost only £1500 not £8000 8tb 128gb mac! Isnt there a mobile plugin file server solution available to supplement the ridiculously low size storage upgrade options on macs.😂

My favourite feature of the MixPre-10 is the headphone volume. It's LOUD if you want it to be. With tons of headroom.

Shed looks great all uncluttered. What size storage do you have on the MacBook Pro? I'm just imagining multiple picture versions on a movie, plus samples. Even slimmed down, my staple sample libraries add up to 1.5TB.

I agree. The Sound Devices MixPre6 I've had for a several years sounds incredibly sweet and musical. I am/was a sound mixer when I got it but I've relied on my Metric Halo 2882 for studio work for close to 20 years. Now that I think about it one of the best live music recordings I've ever made was with the MixPre6. I think I need to incorporate it into my studio set-up too!

I’ve run the same set up for 3 years and it’s great. An M1 MacBook Pro with single cable into an Anker hub with single large monitor. I also built my own 2TB thunderbolt external portable drive that is even faster than the internal drive and definitely recommend one as still portable when travelling.

I love the Sound Devices as audio interfaces. When I travel it serves both purposes of field recorder and interface. The pres sound very nice, the silky top end is ace (if you want even better you have to go for good old Nagras). Very nice choice with RME :)

Amazing that you’re working on an internal drive - presumably it’s a fully loaded M3 Max? And presumably you’re switching to Cubase because it uses all the cores, unlike Logic? Is the hub the TS4? And are you using an aggregate device for all your interfaces? That’s all for now! X

Sound Devices make decent stuff. As a sound designer I've used their stuff extensively and own several SD recorders. Recently also used an MP10II as the backbone for a small live theater production connected to a laptop running Pro Tools, recording also when Pro Tools was not running. It's extremely versatile and well-made. The oldy MP3's kashmir pre-amps got me into field recording actually. I love how they sound in nature. New gen (II) units come with bluetooth and an app ;)

I love the slim down shed, Christian. I just got a couple of questions, if you don't mind... :-) Is this the recording device that Andy Gray mentioned to you? P.S.: What are the specs of your Macbook and how is your harddrive setup ( internal / external )? And what's the big hub that you've shown at the end? Thanks in advance...And great to have you and the shed back! 🙂
