Yes. That's what known as cold soaking but I'm going to try it. Sounds delicious. My favorite meal is my own dehydrated refried beans with green chilies and spices, re-hydrated with hot water and on a flour tortilla wrap with some type of cheese (I usually carry a block of cheddar but any type will work). Also carry pepperoni and peanut butter and jelly for a change up for the rest of the tortillas. Learned to hate the tuna packets !! Going to look for more suggestions from Jupiter.

When your not stoveless, you can also use pasta made of greenpeas, lentils or chickpeas, lots of protein. You bring them to a boil, put the pot in your potcozy. You leave it there double the time it needs to cook. So for instance greenpeapasta cooks for six min, you leave it in there for 12. You season it the way you want and it's great.

5 years late but you could add dehydrated potato hash browns to it or mashed potatoes to it. that's what we do with our chili at home. add cubed potatoes when everything in bubbling and happy. Also some tomato powder and tomato pieces along with worshire sauce powder. Also smaller bottles of spicy oil would kick up the heat factor and give some variation to the chili.
@annadupont76156 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jupiter! This prompts lots of ideas for variations when going stoveless as a vegetarian/vegan. I'd love to try other legumes (black beans, lentils, etc) and seasoning combinations - much healthier than ramen (deep-fried styrofoam) or mashed potatoes!

I tried the cold soaked dried precooked beans for four days while camping. I liked them and could eat them for a longer period of time. It took a while to figure out how much seasoning. I tried pintos and black beans from Gordon Foods. I liked the black beans best but they were seasoned and the seasoning falls to the bottom of the bag so the last jar is inedible, way too much seasoning. In the mornings I ate cliff bars or muesli and trail mix. Thank you for teaching how to make the beans.

On everglades canoe trips I did almost the same thing. I would put dried beans , minute rice , dehydrated onion pieces , dehydrated diced celery , salt & pepper in a Nalgene bottle. Add the correct amount of water and let the Nalgean bottle roll around in the bottom of the canoe while paddling between chickees. ( camping areas, platforms ) or ground ( beach or islands camping areas) . In camp when the fishing was good ( Remember it's called fishing , NOT Catching Fish ) I would have fresh fish ( cooked ) with the bean mix. Unlike backpacking , weight is not a concern when canoe camping the Everglades ( 10,000 islands area ) since you have to have a gallon of water for each day. A 12 day trip requires 12 gallons , I would take at lease 2 more for safety's sake.

Very similar to what I do except I got tired of cold soaking and got a stove. I have a hot coffee while waiting for food to rehydrate. I'll also use dried soup ratchets for flavouring. There's lots of varieties with those. Tomato soup with couscous smashed with black pepper or cayenne is a body warmer.

If you cooked the pre-cooked beans with the spices and dehydrated them before taking them hiking, they'd be even lighter and take even less time to make on trail. And you wouldn't have to bring the paper foil spice packaging. My meals take about 3 - 4 minutes to make with an alcohol stove. About 10 minutes cold soaking. I do this with rice or brown lentils and the weight is 100g cup or per meal. I put them in one cup jewlery ziploc bags, which fit it better than snack bags, no extra material. Even par-boiled rice, I cook and dehydrate to make it lighter. Extras, I add dehydrated greens, veg, tvp, (

Jupiter, how do you package the beans for trail? Individual measured out bags per day or a bag per week that you scoop from? Also, do you have an approximate amount of spice that you add from the packets (# of tsps, TBSPs)? I like to bag my meals per day so I’m looking for a recommended starting point. Thanks.
@JupiterHikes6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you answered your own question! If you like every day bagged, then bag everyday. I measured my beans just like above eye balling the proper amount in a cup (roughly 3oz per day if you want to get technical.) Then for spices I tried to keep it consistent by using a tsp, while at the grocery to buy bulk just estimating how many tsp per day, based on how many meals I needed. Then same with olive oil, if 1oz per day and I need 175 days worth...

Thanks for this video. For olive oil storage and mailing, do you purchase apple juice bottles new/empty? Or do you buy them with apple juice and then reuse them? If the former, where do you buy them?
@JupiterHikes5 жыл бұрын
I bought them at walmart and in one marathon sitting drink all of the apple juice, let the bottles dry, then refill with olive oil. In the past I did little water bottles but found them to be incredibly susceptible to breaking and leaking oil all over my stuff!!! The apple juice bottles are much more robust.

It does not have the calories that olive oil does, the main reason people add olive oil is it is so high calories , about 120 per tablespoon. I think ghee is about 50 or 60 for the same vol you would need to carry in your pack.

If you read the book "eat and run" by scott jurek he had tried going on runs with nothing but olive oil.
