We're celebrating Michael Keaton 's big comeback to the cape and cowl for the first time in 30 years by taking a look back at his Dark Knight legacy thus far.
This is a deep dive analysis into who is arguably the greatest actor to ever wear the bat symbol.
NOW ... that we've seen all we'll ever see of Michael Keaton as The Caped Crusader, let's take a look back at his short lived return to cape and cowl.
Over the years , there have been many Batman interpretations over the years but one stands amongst the rest.
Kevin Conroy is the undisputed definitive Batman having played the part for the better part of 3 decades.
Most notably playing Batman in Batman The Animated Series, the Arkham franchise, and The Killing Joke .
Bruce Greenwood has played the part of Batman on many occassions leaving behind quite the Bat legacy and resume.
Appearing as The Dark Knight in Batman Under The Red Hood , Batman Gotham By Gaslight , Batman A Death In The Family , and the Young Justice series.
In the sea of Bat- men there floats one under appreciated, one underrated performance.
I'm talking of course about Val Kilmer's Batman in Joel Schumacher 's Batman Forever.
It may not be everyone's opinion, but I truly believe Robert Pattinson is one of the greatest Batman / Bruce Wayne (s) ever put to screen.
Robert Pattinson is one of the greatest actors to put on the cape and cowl.
Here's why he is the best Batman on the big screen!

It's not a full lenght movie, more of an anthology made out of 6 segments taking place between Batman Begins & The Dark Knight. You can probably find the different segments here and there on youtube... it's a pretty solid anthology, they got some quality writers like Greg Rucka, Brian Azzarello, David S Goyer, Alan Burnett, etc and some pretty damn good animation studio (the "In Darkness Dwells" and "Deadshot" segment by studio Madhouse are particularly badass IMO). The actors are mainly new talent that hadn't voiced these chara before, aside from Kevin Conroy as Batman... Interestingly, David McCallum voiced Alfred Pennyworth in "Working Throught the Pain", a role that he would later reprise in the DCAMU (mainly in "Son of Batman" and "Batman vs Robin"). Oh wow I didn't know that Mr MacCallum had passed away last year, I looked him up to check if he had played Alfred in other medias, and found out that he passed at 90 years old... Anyway, turns out he voiced Merlin in a couple of episodes of "Batman: The Brave and the Bold", but no other Alfred roles. Anyway, watch the segments in order, and have fun. I bought the DVD because the bonuses are really interesting, in the edition I bought there's audio commentary by Kevin Conroy, Dennis O'Neil, and Gregory Noveck. Good stuff. There's also 4 episodes of Batman:TAS with some extra commentary by Bruce Timm, before and after every episode. There's also a documentary, "Batman and Me: The Bob Kane story" that has some good stuff in it... That was way before every writer we love had done a bunch of podcasts, and before we had so many audio commentaries, so for young me it was real precious to have guys like Dennis O'Neil and Kevin Conroy discuss Batman while watching the same stuff as me.

It’s very simple. Pattinson just gave by far the best acting performance ever as the character. The nuance, the intensity, the compassion, the mannerisms he defines for both Batman (struts shoulders back, intense and eyes locked) and Bruce Wayne (slouched unsure no eye contact) For the first time he’s the main character, from his point of view, where he is the most interesting and frightening character in the movie. He shoulders a weight of runtime far greater than anybody else ever in the role and does so AS Batman. In one film he’s 20 min away from Bale in three films and 30 min away from Affleck in his multiple bloated long mess of movies. Rob’s character is the most accurate, and also who would be most believable of who Bruce would be in real life. So I have it as so: 1) Pattinson - Great 2) Keaton - Very Good 3) Bale - Good 4) Affleck - Mid 5) Kilmer - Bland 6) Clooney - Trash Before Pattinson, Keaton was the best Batman and Bale was the best Wayne. Keaton was inspired in 89. Created the modern interpretation of Batman for general audiences. But is co lead with Nicholson. And intelligently they make the character more intentionally aloof and mysterious. Keaton kind of phoned in his performance during Returns because he’s a sideline character in his own damn sequel film. Even if ever likable in the role. Was also pretty good in a glorified cameo role in Flash. And he’s a better more convincing Batman than Bale, and so greatly so in direct comparison to Affleck as the same character in the same movie during Flash. But Bob Battinson is easily the title belt holder. I’m ahead of the curve. You all will get there eventually. Keaton is the foundation for Pattinson though and it’s obvious he’s the blueprint as Vee states and even more so in particular with Rob who has deliberately stated that Keaton was his favorite Batman even if he loved TDKT films. Most don’t even understand the dimensions to his performance, even as it pertains to how his Bruce is different from his Batman. People just didn’t pick up on it. Vee saying Bale is a horrible Batman is ridiculous. Underwhelming and flawed? Yes but still better than Affleck, Kilmer and Clooney. Easily. But Vee Infuso breakdown of Keaton’s Batman is spot on. Zoe Kravitz and Pattinson had chemistry. There was rumors they had a relationship much the same way Pfieffer and Keaton dated and have visible on screen chemistry. Keaton da gawd however did CREATE the dark modern Batman in mass media and is the foundation all of this stems from. That says something.

Keaton is the best Batman because he encompasses the most important element of Bruce Wayne - that he loves be8ng the G-damn Batman. Everyone else was Batman because Gotham needed him. But Keaton’s Batman was Batman because HE needed him.

It’s the worst because if he’s mentally Batman 24/7 he’d loose his mind. Where Keaton was able to blend, though you’re right he’s not supposed to kill. But if you say you overanalyze, you should have noticed he tried to save Jack Napier’s/joker’s life in the Axis chemical’s plant. Though he did Oswald/penguin in the end though one might say it was a justifiable homicide considering penguin wanted to murder at first the 1st born sons of Gotham, later changing to all children of Gotham. I don’t about you but killing children is pretty fucked up before penguin killed that fat Clown with umbrella gun.

@@thestarkknightreturns Yes, yes, he was miscast. He does nothing well in the role. He himself has admitted it, and is ashamed of it. He is playing George Clooney as both Bruce Wayne and even worse George Clooney as Bruce Wayne in a Batman suit. So he doesn’t understand the character or care about the character. George Clooney IMO doesn’t have that edge to him, of undercurrent of the requisite darkness or intensity and off beat quirkiness to pull off the character. I still consider him a very good actor, that doesn’t mean he was right to play the character. Because even if you’re going a modern update of the 60 series, he doesn’t do a good job at making it goofy and entertaining funny satire either.

Ive always preferred Val Kilmer to Keaton and especially Bale. One of the few things that has always bothered me about Keatons Batman is his height and his lack of personality. And Im sorry but as far as Bale, that Batman voice is just plain... ridiculous. He spends so much time and effort on the voice, how can he focus on being the worlds greatest detective? I think Kilmer couldve played the closest Batman to Kevin Conroy we couldve gotten in a live-action movie. He just needed the right scripts. Obviously, Conroy is the best. I loved seeing Batman actually dress up and infiltrate the mob. Hes not a cop. Yet, hes playing the best cop. Thats my favorite memory of Conroy as Batman

Absolutely fuck no. This is literally the exact opposite of everything 🤣 Michael Keaton is by far the most charismatic guy to ever play the character … he’s from a comedic background, he is actually funny, he even incorporates it into him being Batman. The funny but creepy smirks that is more unsettling than Christian Bale wanna be tough guy permanent frown tough guy face and demeanor. And it’s infinitely better than Val Kilmer and Ben Affleck boring one note wooden performance. Literally Val Kilmer gives the most monotone and phoned in performance as the character ever. He has literally stated he looked down on the material, did it for a paycheck, and he claimed it didn’t matter who was in the costume. His Bruce Wayne is the same monotone wooden stiff and boring. There’s no dimension, nuance, or mannerisms or anything interesting to his performance as the character whatsoever. He is cookie cutter as fuck. In fact, even his Batman voice that while good, it’s just an imitation of what Michael Keaton CREATED. Ben Affleck’s monotone performance in Batman versus Superman is slightly better, but even him with the voice modulator destroys any energy or nuance to the performance … he gives the character no mannerisms or threat. And the certain fanboy obsession of height and size of a character is hilarious, Batman is only listed as 6 foot 2 in the comics. That’s slightly bigger than an average sized man. He’s not the Hulk or Bane in a Bat suit. He’s not scary and imposing because he’s the biggest guy in Gotham. It’s because of his intensity, his relentlessness, his intellect, his frightening methodology, his skill, his tactics and his weapons plus his theatrics. And Tim Burton was onto something and was right, seeing a super big roided out guy in a bat costume has the inverse effect. It looks more goofy and why would he even need to dress like that? Not to mention Ben Affleck is listed either from 6 foot 2 to 6 foot 4. Michael Keaton is 5 foot 9 and his Batman on screen is verbatim called 6 foot. And given the costume and the ears he’s probably about 5’10 to 5’11 that’s only 2 to 3 inches shorter than the characters listed in the comics. Val Kilmer himself who you are slobbering for his totally boring, wooden and phoned in performance is only 5 foot 10 himself. That’s not that much bigger than Keaton. Meanwhile, in the Flash movie we get to see 6 foot 3 Ben Affleck and 5 foot 9 Michael Keaton play the same character, and Ben Affleck looks like a big goofy ass bobble head joke of a Batman. And Michael Keaton kills it and is by far more imposing and intimidating and more of a presence and onscreen threat. It’s not the size of the dude in the suit. It’s the acting. Meanwhile, the character isn’t usually portrayed like the massive dark knight returns, which is what the Ben Affleck rendition was emulating. The fat dad bod Batman, who looks like he can barely move. The character is generally most realistic as an athletic, and fast lean muscle fighter. You know like in real life the people who actually kick peoples asses, it’s not the huge bodyguard that is meant to look imposing, but can get his shit pushed in in terms of fighting. It’s guys with MMA athletic physiques. Which also brings us to Robert Pattinson, who had for that long muscular MMA physique. Conroy is cool but he’s only called iconic and the best because he’s a drawn cartoon. Voice acting is entirely different than physical acting. It’s a separate category entirely. And no George Clooney was awful as both Bruce and especially as Batman. Irregardless of direction. Bale’s growl voice is also hyperbolically hated and smeared. It only sounds truly terrible in a few scenes where he uses it nonsensically or is shouting and/or out of breath. But at this point it is by far the most memed and mimicked so it’s kind of iconic in its own right.

I hope you do have in mind those are a bunch of subjective takes just to defend Michael Keaton as the best Batman. The truth is that in every single Batman incarnation so far you can find good and bad traits. With George Clooney and Adam West probably having the least amount of the former.
@mitchell7309
@mitchell7309 2 күн бұрын
@@thestarkknightreturns all of this is subjective. Doesn’t that go without saying 😆 kind of redundant there chief. I’m giving you my well informed opinion with reasoning. But the vast majority of people consider Michael Keaton’s the best on screen Batman … still to this day. It’s not just my opinion. There have been polls that if you do a quick little search on the google machine. I don’t need to do much defending for Michael Keaton’s Batman, before Robert Pattinson, it was clearly the best. At worst it’s arguable between him and Christian Bale. As I said Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck just played the same character in the same movie and Michael Keaton dramatically out perform him at seven years old. The character isn’t defined by how tall he is or superficiality of what the actor looks like. Because that would be an absolutely retarded stance for what would make what one considers the best on screen Batman there’s no actual reasoning. And I’m echoing the same things that the guy who made this video that you’re following and replying to about Michael Keaton. As a rabid and avid lover of the source material, yes, you can nitpick the different iterations as they are written, but there’s a hierarchy of who gets it right more so than others staying with me? But in this case I’m talking about acting portrayals, not strictly what is written on the script page. For instance, the writing for Ben Affleck take on Batman is absolutely shit and totally counterintuitive to the actual character. Whether they meant that as a stupid start off point of deconstruction, whatever, but his acting performance was solid, nothing good definitely not very good and certainly not great. His appearance in the sequels are even worse, both writing and performance. Same could be said about Daniel Waters writing of Batman in Batman returns what little we do get to see of him, but Michael Keaton, even in his limited capacity and visibly less interested than the first film, still makes it pop. The difference? He’s a better fucking actor than Ben Affleck. He has a better grasp, and take and performance as the character. It’s like saying oh that’s subjective, is Jared Leto a better performing Joke than Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, or Joaquin Phoenix? Fuck to the no. There’s levels to this. And we’re not comparing unlike things in totality because they’re all playing the same character irregardless of how the character is written you can still determine who gives a better performance

As far as the McDonald’s stuff goes and the drive-through line… In all fairness, McDonald’s threw a bitch fit about Batman returns and how dark it was. They threatened to never do Batman happy meal toys ever again if Warner Brothers did not make the films more kid friendly. This movie was, an absolute and exact answer to that threat. So I am not surprised at all that they tried to appease the children’s food clown God by having Batman reference the drive-through. Did it fit? No. But I got a kick out of it when I was a kid. And it’s still one of my favorite Batman lines. Honestly, even though it is clearly product placement, I really feel like this is just an honest candid moment between Batman and Alfred. a man’s got to eat before or after crime fighting. And maybe sometimes if you don’t have time to eat a hot meal before you hit the streets, you can always hit up the McDonald’s drive-through on the way home. I’m pretty sure everyone would move out of the way to let the Batmobile through so he could get his meal very quickly, lol.

@ShaneKixmiller Күн бұрын
I do have to dock you for just one comment. And this is something that I feel like you and other KZbinrs misinterpret in Batman forever after Chase Meridian kisses Batman and he leaves, smiling, that was not just a dumb smile because he was kissed by a girl. She had just told him that as much as she wants him, there is another person that she truly cares for. Her love for Batman is more of a lust. But she is in love with Bruce Wayne. She loves both Batman and Bruce Wayne for their broken psyche. but as she is telling him this, he realizes that the other man she is talking about, is in fact himself. So, after she breaks up with him and gives him a farewell kiss, he turns around to leave and cracks a private smile. That was not some big dumb moment for the audience. That was actually a very intimate moment of triumph for Bruce Wayne and Batman. He really likes this woman. He’s falling in love with her. But it bothers him that she is so obsessed with Batman. When she finally tells him that there is another, that is more important to her, and he knows that it is him as Bruce Wayne, that is a huge personal triumph for him. So, when he turns his back to her, he has a private moment of celebration. The smile is not a dumb gimmick. It is actually a rather deep character moment. Much like how people the whole Martha line in Batman V Superman. Now, I’m not going to argue about how dumb it is for Superman to call his own mother by her first name. that did not feel natural. But everyone seems to think that Batman stopped attacking Superman just because both their bombs have the same name and they bonded through that. That is not the case. By Superman, calling out his mother‘s name, which is the same name as Batman‘s mother, that makes Batman think about his mother. And then when Lois comes up and tells Batman, that is the name of Superman‘s mother, he instantly relates to Superman. Not because, they have mothers with the same name, but it is truly the fact that they both come from families who loved and cared about them. Superman is not alone alien on the Earth, causing chaos. He was raised here. He has people that care about him. And he is fighting to protect that. in that moment, Superman is humanized in Batman’s eyes. The mother’s name was just the catalyst for that change and thinking.
