I agree, the pranayama is fantastic. It is, however, a pricey choice - especially for a beginner. As an alternative I can recommend the Landyachtz Drop Hammer, especially when using risers to lower the platform. 0.25" are no issue. When you have some Dremel or similar and can carve out a bit of wood where the hanger would otherwise collide with the wood, you can use risers up to like 0.75" so that the deck height can get similarly low as the Pranayama (in the 7cm range). Flex is comparable. This is an RKP board, however, so it may rather approach the Trip than the Prana.

Had a drop hammer too, I can agree that the pranayama is pricier, Partly from the expensive wheels. Also the drophammer can be fount used rpetty often making it even mroe of a budget steal. I dont think you can go wrong with either of those!

My buddy lent me his Prana to learn to longboard and it was a great first deck. I had actually owned a Sector 9 longboard for 10+ years and tried to learn how to ride it quite a few times unsuccessfully. The low deck height and big wheels on the Prana made all the difference. I have a friend who has asked me to help him learn to longboard. I'll lend him my Prana when that happpens. The Prana is not cheap, but if you end up buying more than one cheaper longboard and not learning successfully that's not a great way to spend your money either. Depending where you live it's worth checking out some of the Buy/Sell LDP groups I see Pranas and Trips up for sale lightly used on a regular basis so you can score one for less than full price with some patience.

@@threeohm Sounds like a common experience with that deck, people love it as soon as they stand on it! But yeah buying used is always better for a beginner, too bad the used market for pantheon is still rather expensive! I can also recommend their blem section. A little imperfect but still fun to ride, also cheaper!

@@skate-horizons - I just had a lightly used Pantheon Quest come across my social media feed for ~50% new cost. That would be a fine beginner board as well. It was actually the model I bought after trying my buddy's Prana. So the deals are out there if you look for them.

I don't have a Pranayama, but I do have the Supersonic that is super low with big wheels. Fair warning if you get one. Get solid with your foot braking. I was shocked how much faster I was going down the hill by my house with 85mm wheels versus 62-65mm on my cruisers. I was luckily able to ride it out, but it got very fast quickly, and a longboard is harder to carve off speed than with a shorter wheelbase skateboard or surskate truck, especially on the Supersonic where the back truck doesn't turn much. It is a pretty perfect platform to learn footbraking on though since it's only around 2" off the ground.

Yeah, these things can get pretty fast. Its a racing winning wheel for a reason :D And yeah the lwo rear increases the turning radius, nice for pumping, but not too cool for carving :D

My first one was a longboard branded Street Devil, a 40“ symmetrical drop through. It wasn‘t so expensive that I‘d shy away from putting it through rain and other (ab)-use. It works for down hill as well as dance and cruise and not just commute. So I would always recommend the used market first.

Yeah, my first one was also a used one, a long Island Deck with Bear trucks. It was fun, and good to learn on, but once i scraped together some cash i was shocked, what a higher end longboard could do :D But I agree, get whatever you can get your hands on and ride!

I took a quick look at the Pranayama after watching this video. It looks really good, but at €400 as a complete set it's expensive for someone who's just starting out and doesn't yet know if this hobby is for them. I personally started with a Landyachtz Switchblade 38" with Paris 3 axles and HAWGS 70mm 78A about a year ago, which a friend of mine sold to me in almost new condition for under €200. I'm still very happy with it. Since I've already bought two skateboards, a longboard and a surfskate in 10 months, I can't rule out that the Pranayama will find its way to me. But it's still really not cheap...

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but my first board was and still is a beercan boards oat soda. I bought it second hand as a complete with all the original gear. It was awesome. After destroying the threads on the og trucks, I changed it up with some paris trucks and orangatang kegel’s and it is even better. It’s aluminium, so waterproof and highly durable. It’s a double drop so it’s super low to the ground. I find that it’s perfect for riding my local pumptrack and doing some mild (and hard) downhill also for commuting. Would love a review here, just for the fun of it.

Hey, to be honest I heard so much good stuff about beercan boards that I built an aluminium board myself! I dont think they are the best ride experience due to the limitations of the material, but they seem to work just fine and are indestructible. The people that ride em love em. And to be honest if you have a board and you like it, why go down the rabbithole? Just enjoy your perfectly functional board an rip it!

@@bowerplace I weigh about 72kgs and most standard bushings work for me with little adjustments. I usually tighten em until in can't move the bushing washer anymore. give it a try first with the current ones, Paris felt a little harder if I remember correctly. try to steer a little more aggressive. If you still think it's not nimble enough, go a little softer on the bushings! Good luck!

If you're a beginner reading this, ready to buy your first board, you probably don't want to drop about 300 bucks on a pranayama. I have this board, and it's one of the best. But it's a niche and limited board for a number of reasons. I've been skating since 1999 and have logged over 1k miles on this board, if that means anything. This is an option for your first board if you only want to push. And ONLY push. No carving, no popping, no pumping, no shuvits, no manuals, no experimenting with footwork tricks. You can't even raise the board up slightly to reposition the front wheels, like you can with most "beginner" boards. Pushing is the only game in town here. Generally, the reason this prana isn't a good first board is mainly for the reasons this video claims that it is. You don't need much board control to ride this. And it's unlikely you'll build much control on this board, either. You'll get better at pushing and leaning your weight to turn, sure. But as far as building skills on a skateboard, this is not the way to go. If you want a first board to do a bit of everything on and see what you like, look elsewhere. I might be naive, but I don't think the average person picks up any skateboard just because they want something to push for miles and miles. I personally love doing this, and I spend hours every week on my prana. But I'd say I fit into a very niche bracket of skaters. Can a beginner comfortably ride the prana better than most skateboards? Absolutely. But a beginner could also ride a kick scooter much easier than other skateboards, too. Being easy to use doesn't mean it's easy to develop your skills on, and that's why you should probably look elsewhere for your first board. Pantheon do not make a bad skateboard IMO and you can't go wrong with them. Just maybe look for something different on the lineup if you want a first board that you can build a good foundation of skills on.
