The Japanese mamachari bicycle is possibly the best value $100 bike available. It has everything you need, fenders, racks, built-in lock, and lasts for years with almost no maintenance. It's no wonder why almost every single person in Japan has one of these bikes..

Today I'm filming with my good friend Tomoko, who is a Japanese youtuber in Nagoya making videos about learning Japanese.
/ bowietomo0803
She's used her mamachari for 10 years now with no maintenance other than a few tube replacements.
What do you guys think, is the Japanese mamachari bicycle a good deal or would you go with something else?

I just had to get Personal Liability Insurance in Kanagawa Yokosuka-Shi due to a new law. I guess a lot of people got hit by bikes and it costs them rider millions of yen to pay for the medical care. 500 yen a month isn't too bad, as it includes rode side assistance, and they will drive you home up to 40km, up to 4 times a year if you break down.

I used to ride a mamachari everywhere in Osaka! So fun! I borrowed it from my aunt. You can probably buy these used instead of brand new. In Canada I ride a commuter bike on the park trails. It's illegal not to have a bell in Toronto and most people have a head and tail light on at night. It's helpful especially for cars and deer to see you.

Do you think that a lot of men won't ride a mamachari because it is literally called a 'mom's bike'? I wouldn't care at all, but I think that some men feel the need to hang on to their insecure masculinity. Btw, Tomoko is an awesome guest, and she's always so entertaining! (I love her channel!) We have in the Netherlands " mother bikes as well", but not so amazingly cheap as in Japan. Also I wonder about that in the Netherlands people bike with the saddle much higher. To me it is very uncomfortable to bike with the saddle so low. I love the design and the cheap price from Japanese mama bikes.

I watched this video with great interest 😊 Here in the Philippines. They are called "Japan Surplus Bike".. self explanatory.. In my area. The price is about the same $100usd. In Manila. 5 hours away from me towards the south the same thing is selling for $40usd. These Japanese bicycles are coming to the Philippines by the container full. Recently the post covid-19 Philippines is seeing a sudden rise in popularity for bicycles. Not exactly post covid-19 thought. But, it's a little more relaxed her now. Local transportation by motor vehicle cost has doubled and tripled. Taiwanese build mountain bike style is much more common in this region. But, they start at about $200usd.

It’s interesting because my Batavus Dutch Bike cost me a lot more than that. I want to find out how they differ in components etc and how much the price is justified. But mine does feel really good to ride, and I like how it’s so different from my other bikes. One difference is that it does come in 2 frame sizes, and it has the full chain case which I really like. But your ¥10,000 bike had that too.

I bought a similar 27" wheeled one of these from a thrift store that imports stuff from Japan and used to ride it for a 30km round trip commute back in college. It's totally doable and 3-gear hubs are really good in the city. I used to go through spokes like crazy, but that's because I'd do stupid stuff like bunny hop on and off curbs. I snapped the down tube on a different Mamachari, but they're not really made for having the rear wheel replaced with a 20" BMX wheel and bunny hopped over a speed bump on a downhill at 30+ kph. Other than that, they're bulletproof.

I'm from the Philippines, and Mamachari bikes here are generally called Japan Bikes/ Japanese Bikes. We usually don't have brand new mamachari bicycles except for those that came from Japan and sold as surplus. It sells for cheaper here since it's 2nd hand bicycle but they're still good and what you said is true that mamachari bicycles are very durable. Due to the pandemic bicycle sales and users are at rise here in PH since public transport became limited. I ride a road bike but came across mamachari bicycles cause my gf uses it as main transport due to the pandemic. I also bought one myself and I'm happy I did. We have here a community of people mainly interested in mamachari bikes, I joined and it was nice. It's like building a jdm car for we have to search for parts that are rare and not readily available because we just get parts from Japan surplus as well. Just sharing from my thoughts, here in the Philippines mamachari bicycles are very beneficial to the people. I personally love them for they are durable, classy looking and for the community & bond that we have all thanks to this common interest that we have in building and customizing our Mamachari bicycles :)

Those nexus hub will are tough as hell plus and the drum brakes last forever, because it uses metal to metal contact just like the coaster brake on cruiser bike, there's an oil dripper on the drum case to lubricate their gear pushing the metal pad, I think the branded mamachari are Bridgestone, Sanyo, Panasonic. I may be a guy but I use a mamachari bike because of it's capability to carry lots of stuff.

Such an useful, ordinary bicycle is a money-saving cheat. Its priceless when youre on a tight budget, and i think - perhaps preposterously - that only people who've experienced poverty can truly appreciate everything that such ordinary bicycle can give and do. when you have no more than clothes on your back and no money to splurge on anything, having such a bicycle means you can commute a long way, go to work, shopping, see friends, go to sight-seeing and joy rides - in short, to maintain a resemblance of normality till it gets better. Heck, one guy from Chechenia even cycled to Saudi Arabia for hajj on a bicycle not dissimilar to this one!

These Japan bikes are very common in the Philippines. They are not usually sold new here. Instead they come from scrap yards in Japan. they are brought to the Philippines as salvage and resold. Interestingly most of these bikes end up in Japanese scrap yards as the result of being confiscated by the government for illegal parking. When not reclaimed by the owners they are taken to the scrap yard where they are melted down or sold in bulk abroad. They are very good bikes.

3:12 Watch the man with the blue shirt, looks like a meercat with him :o Poor thing clearly doesn't feel at ease. Most likely because this animal needs a lot of his own kind to feel happier and saver. For the bike, in the Netherlands we have our own variant. It's of course a lot bigger as the people are much bigger. But the bikes are even easier to get on and can come in many variants depending on your needs. Including cargo bikes which has 3 wheels and a huge cargo platform in front of the driver.

Tip: Buy a mamachari, a very affordable bomb proof bike with low maintenance. Don't buy a department store bike like Wal-mart bike which may cost equally the same or a bit more than a mamachari but will break easily. =P And then when you have a decent budget, buy a real bike with a mamachari. =P I want to buy one too for local shopping commutes. :D

This is the only bike I would want to have. American bikes make you lean over towards the ground and then you have to bend your neck back to see straight ahead. The Japanese and Dutch with the 1950s style upright riding position would be so much more healthy. When I sit on a road bike and reach down for the bars I cannot see where I am going. My neck does not tilt back that far.

From my understanding pedal assist ebikes are allowed but anything with it's own power (throttle) is considered a self powered vehicle and needs to have a plate on it in Japan. That basically renders every ebike useless since I've not seen any that don't have some sort of throttle on it, either thumb operated or twist. It would make sense if Japan was a little more clearer in it's rules since they obviously don't allow the use of things like hover boards and electric scooters since they too are considered self powered vehicles. And getting caught riding one can lead you into serious trouble.

Hi. I own the Bridgestone Albelt (3 Speed). Question: The 3 Speed Gear is having difficulty shifting & have clunking sound during gear change. Any tips of how to do basic maintenance repairs for the gears? This model super rare in Malaysia & can't find any online video repair guide. Thx

Are they avaiable in a mens version in Japan? I have a sort of dutch cousin of this bike. with a nomal diamond shaped frame. it is fuckig strong, the frame and wheels didn´t say anything when my past 150kg self was sitting on it. And it also did only cost 200 euros brand new.
