Francois Truffart's collection of interviews with Hitchcock are great, it is like a conversation between 2 people with very extensive knowledge of cinema. Worth reading especially if someone is intrested in Hitchcock's filmography.

Love this series. This is an excellent example of why Dr Matthews is head and shoulder above other movie reviewers/channels and why he's truly an expert. This is going to be included in my examples for how to do a video for academics.

I have never read the book, but I own the TV boxset based on the book and it's one of my favourites I have. It's truly a love letter to film and I made some great discoveries when watching the series.

The Scot Mark Cousins, I agree, does key moments very well. Compared to the DVD version, he shies away from how Italian Neo-realism was a major milestone of cinema and world cinema. I disagree with the criticism of what is left out. I think that from an American standpoint it is refreshing precisely because he covers areas of cinema which have been placed by David Thomson in the 1980s as niche, which Thomson labelled as "art cinema". His Introduction book puts it down with a crafty swipe. Whereas Cousins brings to centre stage what is either left out or little mentioned. And that I think is an editorial choice, subjective, yes, but also critical. He restores the value of important films which a Hollywood perspective, call it "Classical" cinema, as Thomson does, thus giving it greater status, will tend to ignore. Why? Because often its aesthetic is what Gilles Deleuze called a "time-image" perspective.

Good stuff Josh. David Thomson's 'A Biographical Dictionary of Film' is so good, but is his personal opinion; as is his 'Have you seen...'. A really good book is a Time Out publication '1000 Films to change your life' 2006. Lots of comment from directors and actors as well as critics. I am going to purchase 'The Parade's Gone By' by Kevin Brownlow - heard so much about it. For reference I have second hand copies of the 'Time Out Film Guide' 2004 and 'Halliwell's Film Guide' 10th edition. Both indispensable. Guys get them second hand if you can. Keep it up.

@@LearningaboutMovies Time Out was a radical London listing magazine in the early seventies. With hundreds more venues showing movies then there were many listing pages. With many, many cinemas showing late night doubles and all-nighters the magazine started to give short opinions on the film. That's how their guide started - and I got hooked.

I can't find Episode 1. The Cousins book is wonderful. I've gone back to the start of it and am trying to watch every film he mentions. It is an astonshing education.

I thought I added a card to this video. Search for "Roger Ebert" on the channel and you'll find the video. When I get back from the trip I'm on, I'll get the playlist together.

Sir, I have a question about screenwriting and writing in general. At the moment I think I'm a good writer as my past few English teachers adore my essays and always give them much praise but does talent or skill in those areas translate into writing screenplays? I haven't written one yet but have ideas for potential ones which I've worked into some of my essays with wonderful results. Any response is appreciated.

My advice is to keep writing and practicing writing. But read read read read read. That is the advice Werner Herzog gives to all filmmakers. Also, Elon Musk.
