Akebono pads are by far the best pads (for Toyota /Lexus specifically) as a former 17 year A.S.E. certified technician, that's all we would use. Also we almost never had to warranty a set, since our brake service consisted of new rotors, and new akebono pads. The best braking experience hands down (because they're oem +spec!)

Because of this suggestion by SK, I put Akebono brake pads (and new rotors) on the front of my 98 ranger about 3-4 months ago. These are the best brakes I've ever installed in 30+ yrs of working on my own cars! No dusting and they feel significantly better / firmer than the stock brakes ever did. (I completely disassemble, grease pins, & 100% flush fluid each time I do brakes. I also do the proper bedding procedure). I have an 03 Jag S-Type and will do the same to it next summer.

Akebono, Period. I've been working on cars and trucks for years and have been through many brands and styles. Akebono pads are by far the best I've ever found especially for Japanese cars. Don't know why, but they work and last longer than rotors. Tossed a Corolla around like Nascar and rotors got warped but pads still had 4 mm left before i got run of the road 6years later!!!
@stinkycheese8046 жыл бұрын
Seems like the worst outcome possible. So-called "warped" rotors with great pads don't stop well. True/good rotor with (evenly) worn pads stop fine. Decent rotors cost more than decent pads so you're paying more for an inferior result. Vehicles are designed to wear the pads faster than the rotors. If that's not the result you're seeing, you're doing it wrong, especially in recent generations of vehicle where the rotors start out thinner for lower cost and weight savings so once they've developed warping or hard spots, there isn't enough thickness left to them to turn (lathe) them so you need new ones. PLUS, it isn't hard to find brake pads with a lifetime warranty. Lifetime warranty for rotor is less common. I'd much rather my pads wore faster than rotors.
@biancaramirez57886 жыл бұрын
Stinky Cheese I had good rotors... I drove like Mario andretti. That's why the rotors got warped.
@stinkycheese8046 жыл бұрын
Okay, then yer doin' it wrong. A Corolla is a dog slow POS, not a nascar, and it'll get wrapped around a tree or any of the SUVs and pickups on the road. Very risky.

Stinky Cheese , I was forced to stick around in California. There's only two ways to drive in cali. Flat out or stop and go. Throttle position is to the floor or hit the brakes. I can drift a damn school bus, can you?????

For all of you: Let me help you. A lot of crap theories say you need ceramic rotors because temp,material,noise, ext ext. The TRUTH is that ceramic Akebono pads are not fully ceramic. The mixture includes copper and some other materials. So are basically soft ceramic, no dust, and stop actually BETTER than original semi metallic. F1 uses them so it is stopping better 100% at around 300Km/h. The only situation that does not stop better is when the weather is too cold. In this scenario you need to avoid them, especially if you like speed and you are living in a cold country. Ceramic ones not getting hot easy, so it will definitely stop better than semi metallic or metallic, despite all these theories people write about ceramic not stop fast... Wishing you a beautiful day !! GREAT VIDEO!!!

I work for Collins Aerospace. We make aircraft wheels and brakes for airplanes. You are right the rotor and staters are made of carbon fiber. They use multiple layers of rotors and staters in one wheel assembly. They do last a little bit longer then steel brakes but the main reason they use them is to save weight on the aircraft. @productcheck2 жыл бұрын
That's right! Don't try to save money on pads as you'll waste money on labor when you have to replace them sooner. Or, have an accident. And don't trust anyone. make sure everything is torqued correctly as mistakes happen when phone rings or other distractions occur to mechanics when they work.
@Russell-rc6qq2 жыл бұрын
@@productcheck This is definitely important. In December 2017, I had new brake pads put on my car and not long after a brake caliber bolt flew out on the freeway from my front driver-side wheel. I did not know what had happened at the time and just heard a loud metallic noise; I made it home without issue but the next day the wheel made a clanking noise and I could not back out of the driveway so the car was towed to the mechanic. There went a full day and missed work because the mechanic had to order the bolt and wait for it to come in. I had the lower control arms redone at the same time the new pads were put in; after I had the car towed the mechanic told me he would check the lower control arm bolts for me and make sure they were tight. The mechanic obviously failed to do so because a week later I subsequently had a lower control arm bolt come undone in my car. My car became immobilized at a gas station (and thankfully not on a busy street or freeway) so it was towed 50 miles away back to the mechanic. I needed an alignment done as well. Anyway, the mechanic who did this work had his reputation in shambles by the other shop employees. One told me neither of these things should have happened. A few years later I went back to the shop. The receptionist admitted that the mechanic who did the work on my car was fond of smoking cannabis and was quietly compelled to quit and go live with his mother in the mountain town of Big Bear, California.

@Einsteindks276 жыл бұрын
DarthKen slots and holes help cool rotors, but may contribute to weakening of the rotor. The right brand and metallurgy are important. If you have warped rotors often, try slotted first. If you expect to do some autocross, go with d & s. Centric has worked fabulous for me, lasting at least 50K miles with high quality pads. It's costly to resurface the rotors, but they do last about two economy levels worth AND perform better.
@wizkid91us6 жыл бұрын
TimothyOnline Yeah when I got mine I had no idea of the following that the car had. I bought my car about a year ago and so far I've only had to replace a few small things but nothing major or expensive. New brakes, regular oil changes, abs module and starter. That's really about it.

Stick with solids. Drilled can cause cracking, slotted can mess up your pads, but if you think about it, both provide less surface area for the pad to contact, plus less total mass of the brake rotor. They make a marginal at best difference in cooling. Its all for looks.

I had ceramic brake pads before... And I can say they require ALOT more effort on the brake pedal, but they lasted years and years and years... Then I switched to semi-metallic pads, and the brakes required 1/2 as much effort to lock up the tires! They simply grip better than ceramic pads, BUT!! My semi-metallic pads seem to never last much more than 1 year, and that's with engine braking on my manual transmission. SO, its give take.

Scott, love your videos and thanks for always sharing your great insights! I've recently had to shop for new brakes for my wife's 2016 Toyota Venza V6 AWD Limited and had such a hard time deciding on which type and which brand. After much research and watching your video, I've decided to go with the Akebono brake pads and rotors.

Trying some ceramic akebono pads on my 16 lexus is 300. I was a little hesitant to try ceramic. My car comes with semi metallic. My semi metallic work incredibly The problem with them is they eat the rotors and eventually wear the rotors unevenly. There messy also. These ceramic pads are super quit and stop 95% as good as my semi metallic. Thanks for the suggestion Scotty, they really are a bar above the rest
