True story, at the start of last year I was about to offload my GH5 then went down the anamorphic rabbit hole and realized I had an Anamorphic gold mine ready to go!

If uou don't shoot a lot of anamorphic then the Sirui with new or used gh5 seems like a great rjg to perfect skills on and then rent a bigger rig for the actual shooting. Great addition to the cookbook

For this entire module we used Cooke Anamorphic/i 1.8X Special Flares. Sometimes the b-roll uses diopters for cheating minimum focus.

I shot a GH5/GH5s for a couple years. Great system. I do miss Ibis and 6k open gate. It drove me nuts that open gate disables HDMI output. I need a larger monitor to pull focus than the small rear screen. I wonder if they fixed that on the GH5II open gate mode? Now I've moved on to Blackmagic cameras. Although they aren't as suited for anamorphic shooting I'm quite pleased with the Braw colors. I like it much better than 10-bit color that Panny uses. Maybe If the GH5 had a way to output Braw, and could output opengate via HDMI, (oh, and I'm completely spoiled now by the dual ISO in the GH5s) then I would have kept it. I really like the Lumix cameras so now I'm waiting for the GH6.

March 2022. The GH6 has blown everything out of the water with its incredible capabilities, but here I am, still considering getting the GH5 M2 because of price. Even against the latest and greatest, the previous model deserves serious consideration.

A week ago, I was thinking about GH5 vs GH5S for Anamorphic, and you've came up with same topic, thanks a lot 😀. - I couldn't find any comparison videos on Anamophic modes of GH5 vs GH5S (Field of View). Just sharing some sensor and FOV specs from my presumptions. GH5: 20.3 MP - 17.2 mm x 13mm GH5S/BGH1: 10.28MP - 19mm x 13mm Both have diffrent Sensor Sizes and Resolutions. ( GH5s has width and GH5 has more resolution) -While shooting with spherical lenses GH5S/BGH1has more field of view than GH5 in Both 16:9 and 17:9 (C4K).[ 'DSLR Video Shooter' has some nice videos on this subject, do watch it if anyone is interested] -While shooting in anamorphic mode, GH5 has open gate, a taller, 4:3 higher resolution video. - GH5S has an Anamorphic mode which is similar to open gate. It is not a croped 4:3 video from 16:9 video area, has more height than both GH5S and GH5's 16:9. It is actually croped* from its 4:3 photo area. croped/downscaled GH5S - Photo 4:3 (10MP) 3680 x 2760 16:9 (9MP) 4016 x 2256 Video C4K: 4096 x 2160 4K 3840 x 2160 Anamorphic mode, 4:3 video: 3328 x 2496 (*It can be either by croped pixel/pixel 4:3 video or downscaled open gate video) - GH5 4:3 Photo- (20MP) 5184 x 3888 (Rest of the Photo and video modes are also croping from this sensor area/resolution) Apparently , GH5 Open Gate video (4992 x 3744) also has a minor diffrence from its 4:3 photo (It can be either by croped pixel/pixel 4:3 video or downscaled open gate video) I think even if GH5S's sensor area on anamorphic mode has a crop and not downscaling, it won't be much less than GH5's Open Gate. Then possibly effective sensor area will be somewhere arround 15.5 -16mm x 11.5 -12mm for GH5S and 16-16.5mm x 12-12.5mm for GH5. As both have different sensor size and resolutions, it's difficult to get accurate area.

My very first cam was the GH4. Loved it. The lack of IBIS eventually pushed me towards the GH5, and once I decided to shoot only anamorphic content, it was a wrap. I absolutely LOVE this camera, and can't wait to see what the GH6 will be capable of in terms of supporting anamorphic shooting. I'm an atheist, but I want you to keep doing the lord's work with this channel lolz

The very first anamorphic fottage I ever shot , was on my original BMPCC and SLR Magic anamorphot 50 adapter. I simply CANT get that creamy, filmic colourgamut and the celloid roughness , I get with a Metabone. SB. and vintage Nikon glass - rounded off with the Anamorphot , ANYWHERE else - not even thinking bout the cheap price for admission to the Vintage Circus ,- I simply LOVE the hustle , and the unique quirks,, that'll drive any newbie nuts, until you see the results ! i simply won't shoot any other way ! Niche alright , but life to short for bland,corny IKEA thrash,- The Original Blackmagic Pocket Rocket , will go down in history , as the Arriflex of Cinematic Video Cameras,-

Seriously considering moving from the A7SIII to the GH5mkII for the anamorphic support✅ stabilization support✅ open gate✅ shutter angle✅ live streaming capabilities✅ etc etc. But I HATE giving up great low light for terrible low light and also giving up one of the most advanced AF systems in the industry. Im torn. 😑

@@AnamorphicOnABudget Oh I’m with you 100%. I wouldn’t shoot anamorphic all the time though. A lot of fast paced, run and gun action stuff I shoot would almost be impossible to do MF. But I’m strongly considering the challenge. I’ve watched the entire cookbook series (thus far) at least twice and it’s very compelling no matter what genre we are fulfilling. As I watch this, the gh7 has come out, and it very much seems 2-3 great advances beyond the great Gh5. However, I’m still glad to shoot on a gh6. For now.

We should petition for them to enable open gate, or something close to it, for the Lumix S5. Maybe when paired with the Atomis Ninja V. Full frame slow motion would be great as well.

Yes! Especially considering the 6K anamorphic in the GH5 and it could maybe be 4:3 so that the S1H isn’t obsolete.

I think the GH5 has been replace by the Panasonic S Series due to the 10.4ms readout in APSC mode.

You mention that the GH5 supports 1.33 and 2.0 desqueeze but I can't find that setting, just ON or OFF, no configurable desqueeze factor - I'm on the latest firmware. Do you via external monitor rather than the built-in one?

If you are using a 4:3 recording mode, turning Anamorphic Desqueeze ON will default to 2x desqueeze. If you're recording 16:9 it will do 1.33x desqueeze. I hope this helps! :) In any case, an external monitor will help greatly and I highly recommend using one. I like to have desqueeze on camera to keep things small and light whenever possible.

I've been watching your videos for a year now plan to purchase my first anamorphic sirui 35 for my Gh5 and also buy adapter so i can mount it on nikon Z5 using the DX crop mode. on a Gh5 i would get a 70mm equivalent and 50 on a nikon. just curious if i got it right before spending 💰💰

I'm not sure if I'm fully convinced yet though, since I'd also like to shoot on spherical lenses and M43 (even with a Speedbooster) just doesn't give the look I like from Super35 or full-frame 😕

So i have a Canon R6 and a BLACKMAGIC4K ... is the GH5 better for anamorphic ... i am about to order the 50 mm Sirui T2.9 with RF mount for my Canon R6 although i wanted actually the 35 mm f1.8 with MFT mount for the BlackMagic 4K ... i can´t decide ... help me ... smiling ... great video once again ... btw joined as 8 mm member of your channel .. i am so fascinated with anamorphic and the Moment Anamorphic lense with 3 ND filters for my Mavic 2 Pro just came in today and trying it out tomorrow ... :-)

When going over the sensor size for the Gh5 I saw you had it written as 17.20 by 13.00. On Panasonic's website they have the sensor size of the Gh5 as 17.30 by 13.00, I thought you might want to know if you desired to make any changes to the video. Happy video-making! ;)

I chose the S5 since I can’t bear the low light of MFT since I commonly use natural lighting or only one light on top of the camera. Do you think Panasonic will add open gate 4:3 like they did with the GH5 but on the S5? Idk how likely it is due to the S1H but even if the resolution is limited to 4K downscaled I’d like to have the full frame option.

@@AnamorphicOnABudget under Creative Video tab I have "Anamorphic Desqueeze Display ON/Off" And under Display tab same option (on/off) I think it is 2x fixed when 4:3 anamorphic mode is enabled or fixed 1.3x when 16:9 recording... I can't find much more. If someone here have GH5S to confirm?
