YOUR CAMERA DOES NOT MATTER!!! Your lens choice is way more important than your body. The lens you choose is going to have way more character and change the image more than a body, you can always color grade. Product photography does not require huge DR or a FF sensor. I was featured in El Restaraunte magazine with pictures I took with an FZ2500 which is a fixed lens camera with a 1" sensor. A cheap body with a nice glass selection is going to go way further than the greatest body and a kit lens.

It’s all about the setup, lighting, settings... knowing how to master those and you can take brilliant shots with any camera. As obvious shown above.

The best camera is the one you truly know how to use. That is where I am in in my amateur. I have a Nikon 3000 and a 5300 plus a Canon SL2 and T7i. Love all of them. I started with the 3000 and can still take darn good images with it, my only issue with it is no video capabilities. I do a mixture of both.

Well I was able to tell the 5D MKIV and the T2i but that's because I watch too many camera videos. :) But yes these days what matters most is knowing what to do with the tools you have instead of having the best tools. An analogy I like is like having a state of the art kitchen and not knowing how to cook vs knowing how to cook and having a regular kitchen :)

I recently (within the last year), jumped from Nikon dslr to Canon Mirrorless and I LOVE my Canon. I love the colour. I really got it for video because I was using my phone before and I wanted to learn more. So I went with what I could afford, which was the M50 and like you say, staying within a budget and really learning that camera. That's where I'm at now. Learning manual (which is new to me). But I love my new camera. It's so much nicer to shoot video and stills on than my phone or even my Nikon (heavy). Anyway, thank you for your video. I love the side by sides.

I guessed correctly for every camera, but I had to really analyze the pics. I was able to to narrow down which canon because those 2 had the same same colours. Basically just down to the 2 canons and the nikon and the sony which had better resolution and I was able to guess. Honestly though, if I saw any of those pictures online I would think it looked nice and not think it looks like a cheap camera.

The images look very similar, to be honest. I made a pretty good guess at which were Canon, but, you'd need to know how the camera and lens render colours before really knowing which is which. And I'd say the lens really does makes a difference, more so than the camera body. I shoot with vintage Nikon and Zeiss lens and I've had quite a few people be surprised that I was not using a modern lens. My favourite lens is the Fuji 56mm/f1.2, but I've had some great results with my Nikkor AI 85mm. And definitely agree...understanding light and how to use the camera you have makes a difference. Thanks for the recommendation on the lighting and colour text books...awesome reads and really helped to improve my images by a huge factor. And thank you for the great content!

I liked the D750 better exactly because of the truer to nature color. If colors are to be messed with, I prefer to make that decision over letting the camera do so. It's not really a fair comparison at all - of course the higher MPIX camera is the most useful for the flexibility it leaves you for post.

I am 100% guilty as a pixel peeper, that fractional increase in sharpness makes me happy haha. Though I totally agree that people take way too much stock in gear. I was shooting on a D3200 with the Nikkor 35mm f1.8 (literally $300 TOTAL for that kit) and made some great images. When I "upgraded" to Nikons D800 line, and expensive lenses no one noticed, or cared haha. It makes me happy, so I dont regret it, but I also dont pretend like the gear made my pictures better.

I applaud you trying to answer this question and you offer some nice choices. Trying to shoot blindfolded? well maybe not but I got to point where I could just pick up my camera and shoot and get an image. I think just find a camera that fits your needs and budget don't get hung on what someone else is using. We all don't drive the same cars, some people need a Van-SUV because they got kids or haul a lot of gear and tools around and others drive a compact car because that is all they need. And here I'm looking for a camera myself. Those Tomatoes look good, now I want a BLT or a nice fresh tomato salad. 😁 ( tomatoes, cucumbers, onion with olive oil and a dash of lemon) My neighbor has got some of the big red ones, I'm trying to trade some of my Meyers Lemons for a few.

I was always taught/told to value glass over bodies. As such, I did an incredible amount of research on older generation camera bodies that aged nicely. I found a low shutter count Nikon D700 for under 400 USD that I'm pretty sure knows more about photography than I do. I am in the "learn the tool of your trade" phase now and am loving it. For a 12MP camera from 2008, I am blown away by the images it produces.

There are slight color differences in the 4 photos from different cameras with studio flash, however it is not that much at all. I would guess the Nikon and Sony are closer in color as Nikon often buys Sony sensors. The left tomato on the 2 Canons is more vivid redder than the other brands of Nikon and Sony which look more natural.

You read our minds! Joanie, you da bomb! What are your thoughts on high resolution (40-60MP) for food photography? Are there benefits for to staying in the 24MP range?
@TheBiteShot
@TheBiteShot 4 жыл бұрын
40 - 60mp is helpful if you're in the higher end of the commercial advertising world, the ability to shoot wide and crop in while still having a large resolution. But, even 24mp is going to be fine as a baseline for most commercial work, even billboards since billboards don't technically need a gigantic resolution since they're being viewed from far away. But, for most photographers, professional and otherwise, 24 - 30mp is plenty.

I think the debate about color science and image quality is really quite silly, especially for an amateur or beginner photographer. Most crop sensor cameras are more than capable and you only notice a difference when pixel peeping and making large prints. For social media and 8x11 publications, the difference is negligible. The only good reason to shell out more money for a camera is if that camera offers a better shooting experience and has features that make shooting more enjoyable. In the case of studio photography, even that choice is pretty insignificant. I will say that shooting on iPhone is noticeably less impressive. You can get decent photos for social media, but even then I think you owe it to yourself if this is a serious hobby for you to go and buy a cheap but modern DSLR (used Nikon D3300 or Canon Rebel T6 can be had for under 300USD).

Still rocking my old 7D (same sensor as that T2i) and there really aren't any new features I wish it had. IQ is still fantastic considering it's a 10+ year old camera, it's all about what you put in front of it. I've been eyeing the APS-C Sonys for a few years now for the more natural color processing (those oversaturated reds are a pain to fix when you shoot a lot of pasta!), but buying a whole new set of glass is scary.
