Don’t know if you’ll see this James but thank you. Didn’t take the piss out of the clubs like most have done. I’d go for the Cobra every time just for resale value. When you feel you’ve outgrown the beginner set and want to upgrade, the market for a used Slazenger set is probably minute compared to Cobras appeal.

A while back, Costco offered a Callaway Edge full set and I believe it came with a bag. One of my playing buddies bought it for his grandson who was in his late teens who was just getting into the game. He said his grandson loves them. My buddy hit them and said amazing quality for the price.

I agree. The Callaway Edge was a much better offer than the Cobra. The Edge was a re-issue of the X2Hot clubs by Callaway that were a premium club when first released in 2014. It's older tech, but great the X2Hot were a great club.

James you should try pulling the the V300 driver shaft and replacing it with a budget replacement shaft like an Apollo Stiff 60 Gram £30, I did this for the Brother in Law then tipped the driver and hot melted to kill the noise and tipped fairway woods by an inch , left the hybrid. My son got his first full length clubs graphite's, but absent the 7 iron, V300 got ! club was basic finish, I loved testing it for £13 it went 180 yards and found the greens. Look these are great sets to introduce the sport, get a handicap and start working down a handicap , by then it new club time, with no love lost. 👍

I'd be more interested in a comparison between these Cobras and the other set that Costco sells: the Callaway Edge. That's more of an apples and apples comparison. Then you take those two against the Inesis set from Decathlon (but looking at the model that is in the same price bracket - I think Inesis has at least three models). The obvious difference is that the Decathlon clubs are own brand, while the two from Costco are just resale of established brands.

I just can't believe either of these sets would outperform an old used set of ping irons (G2/G5) and some old Taylormade woods (R series, SLDR, RBZ, Aeroburner etc) and any putter that takes your fancy to overall fit the same budget. The best part, these older clubs will be worth basically the same money when you want to move them on!

Cobra, mainly because when you've outgrown the clubs, you can throw them onto your resale site of choice (or work with a club reseller) and make a couple of dollars back, while I imagine the Slazengers would go straight to a donation bin in a thrift shop, or, at best, given to a friend who wants to try golfing without buying clubs.

Great video James. £500 is a sensible budget for many to start the game of golf. Yes, you can get second hand clubs for that, but something shiny and aesthetically nice is often motivational for a new player. Good comparison. However, don't forget the component companies. Ones I've used... Diamond Tour Golf- probably the most generic, but still very serviceable clubs Hireko- built many clubs. Some would be considered knock off by some, but other designs original. Quality is always good albeit maybe not quite the finish of major companies. Never an issue with me. Also, technical guy, Jeff Summit, has endless patience and has been an always friendly and accessible person with deep knowledge. Golfworks- especially if you are sold on forged, they are pretty darn high end. Also, direct to consumer companies like Tacomo, Hogan, Haywood, New Level, and Sub 70. All very fine equipment. What I like about all these vs. package sets is the ability to customize anywhere from a moderate degree to a high degree. Loft, lie, length, swing weight adjustments. The shaft is very important for various swing speeds, and with all these companies, getting an affordable shaft to fit your swing so you don’t have inconsistent flight patterns like James had should be fairly easy.

The callaway set is just a re-release of their x2 hot series of clubs from 2014. That’s why they can sell them for “cheap”. They do the same thing with their other box sets that are branded as Strata. They can use their old models and just rebadge them for new golfers. It’s pretty smart on callaways part, and isn’t a bad deal for newer golfers getting decent irons.
@michaelreilly58882 жыл бұрын
I loved it when the bag strap broke. Nonetheless, either set would work for a beginner on a budget but I'd be very worried about either driver in these two sets. Alternatively, it would likely be a better investment to buy used major brand clubs the golfer could try before plunking down cash. The later approach, while slightly more costly, would provide more performance and more long-term enjoyment.

I played golf as a boy in the '80s, and I decided at the tail-end of 2022 to go to the driving range and see if I can still hit a ball. I started with a driver, just using the ones that they let you use there, but they are just awful, so I looked at their ex demo ones for sale, and the cheapest was about £175.00! Long story short: since I was taking it relatively seriously, for part of my Christmas my wife offered to buy this set of Slazenger full graphite shafted clubs at £200.00. It was a no brainer, and we don't have a Costco, either. I haven't been getting on too well with the driver, (so I'm glad to see you didn't either!) but for what ends up being £10-ish per club, I just can't complain too much! And to be honest, even the cheapest Chinese junk is 100 x better that what I used to play with in the '80s! I'm not even sure I'm going to stick at it, so why spend £400.00, + the cost of a bag, just to end up finding out that you've wasted your money!? If I do get into it, and I want to upgrade by next year, then I'm sure I can get at least £150 for them, and then I haven't lost anything, it's just a really cheap rental!

THE PROBLEM!? What are these clubs like in a year or two (or five). Twenty years ago I upgraded my "used" iron set and a couple "pieced together" woods with a "50% off" Dunlop graphite shaft, cavity back iron, 1-3-5 wood set. Played OK (for my talent level) until heads started separating from shafts and grips disintegrated into "friction tape". In about 15 to 20 rounds. I think they look like a classic Regal set and sure they would fall miles behind a proper technological set of Cobras. Do you remember the smart car esque Aston Martin? undesirable, complete stray from the brands capabilities and target market and ended up wholly unprofitable. Thats what these clubs scream to me, I think you would still struggle to move these on as anyone aware of Cobra as a brand would also be aware that these clubs are not really Cobra clubs. 100% agree they're better than Slazzys though just don't think either would be worth buying.
