My experience of the my Yaris T Sport (5 door facelift) has been overall brilliant, especially considering it's nearly 20 years old. Absolutely no major rust whatsoever, just the odd bit of surface rust, the engine is bulletproof too, 70k miles and it is absolutely not showing any signs of age whatsoever. In terms of how it drives, it's a very fun little car, takes corners effortlessly and I totally agree with u about the gearbox, absolutely smashing! At first, I disagreed with your statements on the power delivery, but no. I had the AC condenser replaced, and some other AC related stuff, and it noticeably has more poke, and it seriously does pull hard even at high revs. Before it felt anaemic above 5.5k rpms, now it still pulls above 6k. I'm chuffed to bits a viral content creator like u has acknowledged this car!

I've had mine since 2021. From the factory the chassis is a bit average. It has the short wheelbase and light weight, but soft lacklustre suspension heavily biased to understeer. Sort it out with a rear anti-roll-bar, axle bushes and lowering and suddenly it all clicks. I don't have the greatest car experience, but you can *place it*, on the road like nothing I've ever driven. They're not fast, but my god are they agile. Mine has a custom intake setup that dynoed at 128hp, really opens the top end up 😁 They're really not a hot hatch though - more of a warm hatch that was so brilliant it frequently gets compared to contemporary hot hatches. It gets 50mpg on a run and comes within a whisker of an ST150 in a sprint to 60.

I had a Honda Jazz 2015 1.3l as my first car and it also had 100 bhp. It was a reasonably fun car to drive, especially revving the engine out as that's where it made most of its power. The ride was a bit firm, but it handled well. Insurance was super cheap too and i got 55mpg on the motorway. Ended up upgrading a to a Golf GTI which of course was way better but still like the honda jazz for what it was.

Sadly there's no getting around the slow steering rack that I know of, and they could get even worse in this platform. They were something like a 17.4:1 steering ratio, but I've seen as slow as 19:1 in facelifted Scion xA's (a damn near identical twin under the skin, known as the Toyota Ist elsewhere). I've spend around two decades chasing what the Vitz RS/Yaris T-Sport is. We didn't get the full treatment in North America. All we got was the sedan and coupe version of the Yaris/Vitz in The States (the Japanese Platz, though to be fair the Coupe was a North American exclusive), and Canada had an Echo RS hatch that was none of the brawn-- not the suspension, not the gearbox, not the brakes... only the seats and 1.5L engine. The T Sport was lowered and stiffened versus the regular Yaris, not to mention the 15x5.5" alloys and four wheel disks, and some added bracing and welds. What the United States did get was the xA. Same 93.3" wheelbase, short overhangs, but somehow weighing far more than the Yaris TS. Lucky for the U.S., the Echo was more basic-- virtually all of them came without power windows or locks, among other features to weigh it down, yet they all had the 1.5L powering them. To put it into U.K. terms, our advertised curb weight for the coupe was 916kg, or 2,020lbs. The Scion xA was 1,062kg or 2,340lbs... not really sure how, aside from maybe crash ratings, a little more sound deadening, and various things added (power windows and locks were standard, 15" wheels were heavier, and beefier suspension all played a part). Oddly enough, even though the Scion xA has a smaller muffler than the Echo sedan and coupe (the canister itself was larger, not to mention a longer pipe for the longer overhangs), the Scion muffler actually weighs a few pounds more. Both even have the same variable backpressure design with a spring loaded flap that opens and closes depending on load. That stiffer loaded rear torsion beam of the Scion xA and Yaris T-Sport wasn't given to the Echoes in North America, even though the rest of the world had them (even economy models)... not sure why. Maybe fear of snap lift-off oversteer? The front control arms aren't listed as compatible with the Scion's (which are shared with the MR2 Spyder, along with front brakes), yet they fit an Echo; bushings were probably less firm on the Echo. And since the Scion was heavier, it had shorter gearing like the T-Sport (a 4.3:1 final drive, as opposed to the Echo with a 3.53:1... imagine second gear going up to 64mph instead of 55mph). Even the air snorkel opening for the intake is noticeably wider on the Scion than the Echo. I've got the seats, leather wheel and shift knob, stiffer beam, chunkier rolling stock, etc. Now it's a matter of the transmission. These cars really do take well to suspension and chassis tweaks because of the lighter weight. Some light wheels, pulleys, and opening up the intake all definitely help them. While the engine isn't a powerhouse, it does have close to the same hp/L with the Chevrolet LS7... just food for thought. The power to weight of a Yaris TS is very similar to the Mk1 Golf GTi's, as well, but with more safety (and reliability) and way less of a premium to buy since the Yaris isn't a sought after classic. I really enjoyed the exterior shots of this thing getting thrown around as hard as you did, as most reviews are much more tame about it.
