Hopefully in most circumstances our mobile phones will prove good enough to give us internet on the road but for those occasions when we find ourselves with a poor or no signal we want a reliable cheap solution to allow us to continue watching Netflix!
So in this video we'll be showing you our dedicated internet setup in our campervan. We feel it's the best cheap WiFi setup for a campervan or motorhome and hopefully you'll agree too!
So WHO are WE? We’re Scarlett, Craig and Merlin and along with Helsing, form the PILGRIM PODS!

Thanks for your brilliant video Craig! Just finished installing the puck and connecting the NetGear Aircard - works brilliantly- getting 44mb download and 17mb upload (I’m sure that may differ in the middle of nowhere) Oddly enough a little crack on my display as well - guess they were rejects and hence cheaper...? Waiting for a dry day for the bonded Windows next - having watched your video on that a few times as well. Keep up the good work!

Glad the installation went smoothly and it's working well mate. 🙂👍 If you got the Aircard from the same place as me take a photo of the damage and fill out their complaints form on the website (takes 2 mins). They'll send you out another without faults and then you can have two like me! 😀 Bonded windows... Check out 'Kiravans' how to video; it's the best I've seen. My method cutting out etc was good but my application of the adhesive was a bit messy and resulted in a leak. I think it's worth getting a decent gun rather than the cheap ones as it'll make life easier. I'm hopefully putting a video out tomorrow on my issues with a leak and resolving the issue with the warped window I had. Like I say, Kiravans tutorial is worth a look for how to apply a nice bead of adhesive. Best of luck mate!

Nice and neat instal! You did a much cleaner job than we ever hope to achieve :P interested to see how this works out for you. We relied solely on our phones, which is great for ease but not always ideal... plus tethering so much hammers the phone battery :P I'm sure there were times an external aerial would've helped us tremendously. Good work on the video too, takes a lot of work to fit so much useful info into a relatively short vid! =)

@@PilgrimPods I saw your post on self build campervans on Facebook and thought "I recognise that van..." :P Yeah, will be good to hear about the real-world results. In the early days of our trip (before we got good data sims) we relied on coffee shops etc, that was dire! The phones worked okay, we could often get good upload speed which was ideal with a 2-3GB vid, but as I said there were definitely times we could've done with a boost :P Cheers, we enjoyed the live but rambled on for a lot longer than expected, haha. Interesting video. But for us its expensive. Data only sims with monthly contract. Or pay as you go Data sims are still expensive. Especially as we may only be away from home for several weeks. As we use mainly Campsites etc. We use free wifi hotspots and also use a Long Range Wifi Extender and pickup signals from supermarkets etc. Initial cost is around £30 with no monthly fees. Paying £15 for uploading 1x KZbin video when away from home is not worth it on pay as you go or 12month contract. Supermarket car park free uploads when shopping is ideal. We absolutely get where you're coming from. 😊 Your usage requirements differ to ours; we'll be weekend warrioring and mainly wild camping more often than not to avoid campsite costs. Thanks guys! The Puck-2 does have a signal boost with a 6dBi peak gain as I understand it. In most circumstances it should work just fine. To hear others talk with real life experience using antennas on the road there are always places you'll find where you can't get any signal. We're just hoping our choice of antenna keeps those places to a minimum. It has great reviews and a lot of folk use it so our decision to go with it was guided by that. 😊

Hi Peter thanks for checking our channel out. Yeah it's an L2H2, we would have gone for bigger but we needed something that could fit on the drive with the car. Turns out, for our needs it's probably the perfect size but time will tell. As for MPG I can't say as we honestly haven't been anywhere in it. Saturday was the first time it has moved off the drive for two months and that was just a 30 min drive to try and avoid issues of it sitting still for too long. 🙂👍

How is the wifi set up performing now that you have it installed and working?

Hey Toni, it's difficult to say as we haven't been anywhere in the van to truly test it out. As far as testing does go, I've chucked the sim from my phone in the Netgear router and the signal bar appears to be similar to my phone despite them being two completely different devices; the phone is a Samsung S8. With the router then connected to the antenna it does boost the signal strength by at least a bar if not two. When having a nose on forums or social media if ever I see the router or antenna mentioned my ears do prick up to see what others think and without a shadow of a doubt in my mind the antenna is a winner. The Netgear is also good value BUT I have since heard the cheap grey import I have only picks up two of the three frequency bands used in the UK which if true isn't ideal. I haven't fact checked that but it is something I will be mindful of in the future. Good luck with your own build, it looks a nice van! 🙂👍

We've wanted to build our own camper for years but haven't been in a position to do it until now so in the interim we've watched sooo many videos on the all subjects relating to it. The Netgear will eventually be wired into the 12v system for charging.

Having a look at the netgear, its rated at 300Mbps (megabits). There's quite a big difference in the quoted 300 Megabytes you stated. Just a nit pick is all, enjoyed the video and its something i'll be lokoing at doing when we pick up our camper in the near future.

The roof looks so clean. I only have a reversing camera on mine and it's already a mess of sealant up there. As for internet I pay for unlimited EE on my phone with tethering, I assumed there'd be a way for repeating, boosting or amplifying signals so I could make use of what I already have, I did find the Teleco PhoneBoosterVan Kit which would be ideal but it's £999, so not a sensibly priced option. I get the feeling there's an amazing solution that's pretty cheap but I just can't quite see it.

I'd be hoping lots of sealant means everything is all nice and watertight. 😊👍 When we next upgrade our phones we'll be looking for an unlimited package too. I'm sure for most things our phones will have us covered but whilst the van was empty I thought why not add an antenna to the roof and just call the exterior done. 😁 How are you getting on with your own van now? 🙂

I haven't decided to be honest. The van came with a 50AH Yuasa AGM which despite living in the shed works great when I hook it up to the ceiling lights so might pick up a larger one of those as they have amazing reviews a across the campervan and motorhome community. Ideally I'd get a lithium battery as bang for buck they're without doubt the best and much lighter too but the upfront cost is still expensive... Thing is, we only want our van for weekends away so a cheaper AGM should probably do us just fine and though they have to be maintained slightly differently to lithium it'll get us used to battery management without the stress of worrying about knackering a £500 battery! 😄

I've only tested with the simcard out of my phone and in testing connected to the Puck it definitely improves the signal. Will definitely suffice for our needs. Best of luck with your own!

Possibly not mate, some folks swear you don't actually need the antenna and placing the router up high in a rooflight does the job. For what it cost though and after much research I thought the Puck was worth splashing out on whilst the van was empty and I was cutting holes.

Nice antenna! Might consider that one also for my van! First need to finish my conversion (Fiat Ducato (=Citroen Relay / Peugeot Boxer). ( see my blog www.djsmiley.com ) Did you also install a seperate power socket for the Netgear or are you just using its internal battery (and charge when needed?) And are you going to install the Netgear in a fixed setup? I know those tiny connectors are pretty fragile and I wonder if they will survive all the vibrations when not properly fixed.

@@PilgrimPods seems my other comment did not post. It connects to my network EE okay but says that there is no Internet which has to be configured via the router's Web config page. When I open that on mine it goes on about registering with BigPond and I've not figured it out yet.

@@mattt1974UK others have struggled to set theirs up initially too. The following quote contains info that sorted the issue for most... 'Well firstly this item ISN'T a factory unlocked unit, it's branded as "Telstra" (aussie network) When you do put a sim in, it won't reject it but rather won't let you connect to the network, so after about 6 hours of trying to get it to work (and about 100 google searches) finally found the solution So you kinda have to log in to what i call the "back office" (192.168.1.1.) and change the APN setting over from Telstra on to whichever network you're trying to connect to which in my case was EE A Quick search of search like "EE APN data setting" got me the info i needed to connect. Yeah it is really that simple! But would've saved me 6 hours of pulling my hair out had the seller just included info either in the package or on the ad!' Hope that helps if you haven't sorted yours out yet. 🙂👍

@@PilgrimPods Thanks, I was hoping it was a simple APN settings thing. Like you've I've not bought my dedicated SIM yet (Van's not ready) so I'm trying it out with my mobile handset SIM. When I get a quiet moment I'll give it another go and let you know.

Hello Mr President! With the world as it is at the moment we're not out there using the van so haven't picked up a sim card yet for it. In the UK, Smarty is a popular sim card provider with unlimited data costing £20 a month at the moment and that's for true uncapped speeds. We'll be looking for something like that when the time comes so we can hopefully do a bit of remote working out on the road. Hope that answers your question. 🙂

This is so good and looks like a very neat install. I so very nearly purchased this but having just visited the website the poynting puck-2 will not support vodafone/ three of ID mobile. gutted 🤦‍♂️

I finally received mine yesterday and can confirm it doesn't work with my Lebara sim (runs on Vodafone network) but I am switching to Tesco (O2) shortly so that should be okay.

Great video, thanks. Just as a warning to anyone considering buying one of these from Hong Kong. I ordered one four weeks ago and paid for "Express FedEx Delivery" (2 to 5 day service), it hadn't been dispatched after one week and after chasing them they sent me a FedEx tracking number that shows it hasn't been dispatched (two weeks after placing the order and it is still showing not receiving the package). After chasing them up again last week, they sent me a second tracking number for regular shipping and that hasn't been updated in over a week either. So four weeks after placing the order I am without the Aircard and paying for express shipping is a rip-off. I am going to try getting a refund for the express delivery bit I won't be holding my breath.

Sorry to hear you've had a rotten experience. I have to say ours was quite the opposite. Delivery was about a week but when the Aircard arrived it had a small crack in the screen, popped onto the complaints section of their website with a photo and a week or so later received another through the post. Both work fine other than the one having a 10mm crack. 🙂
