Coming back to the game after many years away and only ever being a casual player. Looking to get into the game more seriously and this video was very helpful. Thanks! 🙂👊

I used to recommend "The Art of the Checkmate" by Renaud and Kahn (Dover) and "Chessboard Magic" by Irving Chernev (also Dover) - for a good initiation to the essence of beauty in Chess ... More recently: Laszlo Polgar big book on combinations, miniature games and problems brings a lot of wonderful materials (for Endgame Studies - lacking in that mammoth compilation, start with Kasparian "Domination" - books on great player and tournsments of the past are excellent reading too.. Zara, keep the enthusiasm and good work!! Greetings from South America 😂

Zara could you do a video on the very basics of chess openings. Why there are so many chess opening names. The basics behind a chess opening. If you can. Thank you.

Will get it on my list!! Thank you for the suggestion!

1:25 is a good book, but it's definitely not for beginners, particularly those who have never seen a chess set in their life. For beginner someone really new (below 1000-1400) I think the 9 Artur Yusupov books and the old book by Siegbert Tarrasch Game of Chess is a better choice.

The Complete Book of Chess Strategy, keeps on coming up in lists of best books. Winning chess strategy by Yasser Seirawan I.M. and Jeremy Silman Is a newer book about strategy, without discussing the openings. And is available both on Chessable and Forwardchess. I wonder which of these two books would be the best for beginners to learn strategy?

Winning Chess Tactics is a decent intro tactics book, but I was not too impressed with the Winning Chess series especially on a bang-for-buck basis. I don't have the Strategy one in that series as I didn't think it would have much to offer beyond the content in "Chess For Dummies" (which is also a good intro book), but I would recommend Reassess Your Chess from this video as a great alternative strategy book. If you are looking at starting your library with minimal money, The Mammoth book of Chess by Burgess has a ton of content including opening, tactics, endgames, etc and you may be able to find it in the bargain bin.

I loved this video for 2 reasons: (1) the host does not over-dramatize what she is talking about. (2) almost no one discusses their favorite books. I am very grateful for what I learned today. Finally, I agree that Jennifer Shahade is one of the most courageous women in chess. With the Polgar sisters and their friend "Anna" in Hungary have done great things in and for chess. There is no reason why women's chess is promoted so little.

I like your recommendations, but I can't agree with that book by "Magnus" Perkins. Clearly a fake name. It's one of those countless books on Amazon spit out by Google translate that are written incoherently.

Lost me at "Chess Queens." Sounds more like a hit piece rather than a chess book. Judit Polgar has far better books and courses than Shahade could ever put together.
