We went and saw this movie last weekend. And all four of us give it a 10 out of 10. The special in the '80s was wonderful and this movie was even better. Highly recommend seeing this one. Is a true Christmas movie.

To be fair, this is based on a kid’s book. I read this in class in elementary school. I really liked it at the time, and I had a nostalgic moment when I saw this was coming out. Thinking about it now, it’s pretty special because I don’t think I know many churches these days that would allow the “rotten” / poor children to keep coming in to eat for free and mess up their Christmas play

I loved the TV movie version of this as a kid. I'm looking forward to seeing this one.

I was curious what you'd say about the film, since I'm a big fan of The Chosen. It seemed like a really great telling of the book, which is quite short. I haven't read the book yet, but it seemed like a lovely adaptation of a story and didn't try to be too flashing or quippy as a lot of children's movies do today.

The only other movie I’ve seen from Dallas is “What If”, starring Kevin Sorbo. It’s basically the movie “The family man” but with a faith based story; I enjoyed it

_The Chosen_ is excellent, but I just read the book this is based on, so my expectations were mid. Some children's books are immersed in a certain culture, but are genuinely funny and accessible to people outside that culture - some of my favorites in that genre are _Because of Winn-Dixie_ and _The Watsons Go to Birmingham_ . This book is not one of those. An audience raised in the Evangelical church would probably find it relatable. As an Italian-American Catholic, the only memorable character for me was the highly stereotyped Italian pizzeria owner and the many children she was always screaming at - and she was probably written out of the film 😂

But this isn’t really new. I remember as a kid seeing this on television and I remember being in the actual play in production in middle school I believe.. is this show is not new in any way shape or form it’s just a modern take on an old property

Great family movie. The acting is flat, the story is paint by numbers, and still it was a warm Christmas family watch.

I find it ironic that the evangelical fundies (not particularly Christian or religious) who don’t want messages in their entertainment clamor for dreck like this which is nothing BUT messaging. These are the equivalent of medieval passion plays, which were propaganda made at the expense of people who didn’t agree with them. And calling the actors who appear in these things “stars” is too generous, Alan. Has beens like Kevin Sorbo and Melissa Joan Hart can barely draw flies if they were covered in syrup. At best, they’re bill payers.

That is an incorrect interpretation. They don't want amoral and dystopian messaging that is both offensive and blasphemous. You know the kind of cuts and reedits to movies that studios do for other orthodox religious places in the world where they want it to be shown. Or having CCP censors work with your studio to make a special version for China messaging. Looking at you Marvel.

My son went on a field trip at school to watch this. Him and all his 11yo friends loved it. 60 year old men saying a kids movie is bad 🙄. Do y'all not realize almost all the movies we grew up watching are bad if you go back and watch them again?

I would argue that a 60 year old has more ability to judge quality than an 11 year old, and many old movies hold up just fine. Modern movies are, almost without exception, careless slop designed in a committee. Enjoy what you like, but don’t pretend all things are equal. They aren’t. Lots of stuff is not worthy of consumption.

Had to come back and write how off base this review is and I wonder why so curmudgeonly a review. Bad mood that day? Does not like Dallas Jenkins Chosen series on some grounds? As this was a sterling good film which I enjoyed for start to finish and for once this year a movie that actually sticks a landing and has a great payoff. Don't listen to this review and just go see it if you like movies with hope and good will.
