My only problem with being a clarinetist is that we can't express our agony. We have to hold it in and turn it into all these joyful pieces like the Mozart Concerto. Nothing against Mozart, that was the best concerto ever written. I just want to be able to express my pain the way a pianist can with Chopin or Rachmaninoff.

How about the Nielsen Concerto? Or Osborne’s Rhapsody (which I suppose is kind of a bassoon piece). Or this one, Maslanka’s Images from the Old Gringo, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nn-3h4SHhN-Ams0 9:47 is probably the most haunting music I have ever heard.

Brahms Sontatas? Or Quintett

@@superkalifragilistisch6511 while i love those (and the trio, brahms in general for that matter) that's not really what I'm talking about

My friend plays the clarinet and this is helpful to show him good classical pieces for that Instrument. There really needs to be more solos for the clarinet.

You missed the Hindemith sonata! Its four movements are a wonderful example of mid 20th century work. Hindemith blends French delicacy and German depth and darkness beautifully in this chamber piece. I'd give this a slot on the A- tier.
@QuickStartClarinet Жыл бұрын
O ya, absolutely! The Hindemith is a great piece. I'm sure there are a ton of others that I missed as well.

this was 2 years ago wow. I'm a freshman in college and I'm majoring in music Ed, however I jiat finished my jury performance and I kinda bombed it. do you know any pieces that work hard with rhythm and counting? thank you!
@QuickStartClarinet2 жыл бұрын
How hard are you thinking? Stravinsky’s Three Pieces is really challenging. A lot easier, but really great for developing rhythm, I would recommend the odd numbered Rose 32 etudes. I can’t think of anything great for rhythm in the middle off the top of my head at the moment. Maybe Poulenc Sonata?

Great, I find hard to choose a piece to play, I'm still learning and I still don't know a lot about clarinet music. Could you write down the list or create a playlost?
@QuickStartClarinet4 жыл бұрын
That’s a good idea! I will say though that I wouldn’t recommend any of the pieces from this video for anyone who hasn’t been playing for at least 3 years. Really all of these pieces are pretty much professional level.

One piece I think needs more attention is John Ireland's clarinet sonata (1943).

Jean francaix concerto is S tier no doubt.

O ya, that’s definitely a great piece! I’m not sure if it quite competes with the popularity of the other pieces in the S tier, but it is A tier for sure!

How about some non-classical more beginner friendly pieces? I just discovered Stranger on the shore, it's the only non-classical piece written for clarinet that I know of. Is there anything else that's reasonably well known? Pop, jazz, traditional, other? Like jazz has jazz standards, are there any non-classical "clarinet standards"?
@QuickStartClarinet3 жыл бұрын
Good question! Though you could certainly play jazz standards or any pop or folk music on the clarinet, the only truly clarinet specific non-classical music that I can think of would be Klezmer music. I’m not familiar enough with Klezmer to recommend any beginner friendly clarinet specific pieces but you can search for Klezmer clarinet and find lots of fun stuff!

Haha! Best piece of the clarinet is the mouthpiece because it makes the most difference!
