In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to the new single from Marillion's upcoming new album. The song is Be Hard on Yourself, and the album is called An Hour Before It's Dark. I continue to be impressed with this band's social commentary and expert musicianship. This song is a real masterpiece and a call to arms to address the Climate Crisis. I very much enjoyed this listen. I hope you enjoy as well.

I'm being completely serious now, Doug. Tickets are on sale for the 2022 Marillion Weekend in Montreal, July 1-3, 2022. Great summer, great city, great fans, great music. I'll buy you a drink! You could upload remotely. These guys are well over 60 years old and won't be the same in a few years. Miss out, and you'll feel like you missed the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Who, and Genesis when you had the chance to see them in concert.

In 1989 Marillion recorded a song called Seasons End. which was about how they saw climate change occurring and their fears for the future. It's available on KZbin as a live track with Their Friends from the Orchestra and is probably the best version of the song they have done. Having seen your reaction to Estonia, I suspect you'd love it.

Doug...Already a prog-head and huge Genesis fan, getting into Marillion's first album, Script For A Jester's Tear" (1982), could not have happened more naturally and, as Steve Hogarth told you in your excellent interview with him...Marillion has been pointed and political since the beginning. Look up "Forgotten Sons" and you'll see. Marillion became IMPORTANT to me and my late wife many years...and they are becoming important to my current wife, as well. They are deep, rich and resonant. WELCOME to the world of Marillion, Doug!! I have a feeling they'll become important to you, too!!

I love the way you pick up on the lyrical meaning so often. Steve Hogarth’s lyrics are often multi-layered - a great example being the one you started with after the song ends. “You’ve got an hour before it’s dark” - I read today that Steve Hogarth did indeed want to strike echoes of playing outside before mum calls you home, as well as the urgency of acting in the face of impending disaster. Another nice line, (IMHO), is “cause of death: consumption”. Marillion lyrics so often make the think, even if I don’t claim to understand all the layers Hogarth puts in. Same with the new single, released today: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fX-Wd6SXnrR0edk “I put my arms around her and killed her with love”

Just to say I am not a Patreon (sorry on benefits every pounds sorted to keep head above the water.) BRAVE is a concept album about a girl standing on a bridgen in England called the Severn Crossing. A girl on the bridge who was wanting to take her own life she would not talk to anyone. No one knows what happened to her. The album is looking into what caused her to do this. If you use it on your channel for your patreons, do the whole album in one you get it as a whole album and listen to the whole album without breaks. Just a n album, my favourite Marillion album it came out in 1994. I think your guys would love it.

Thanks for this. I really appreciate your help in finding even more nuances and subtleties in Marillion! They are indeed a great band, and I am sorry I missed out on so much of their work after the Fish era.
