Another excellent and helpful video! I, too, have recently noticed the marketing trend of saying a garment is wool, cashmere or cotton, and then the composition list shows that it's only 50% or less, and the rest is polyester, acrylic or polyamide. And it's not just for coats: I've also noticed this trend for sweaters and blouses, too. It's so important to read the label to know what you're buying!

Sometimes the wool or cashmere is less than 10% of the total~not that long ago fabric content went from highest % to lowest. Now you really have to look at the tags to tell.

The classic notched lapel collar is the most timeless. The lapel points end halfway between the base of the neck and the standard shoulder seam. This is one detail I look for when investing in a high-quality, wool or cashmere coat. I love the longer coats that have been trending in the past few years, the longer, the warmer, especially for a dress/skirt wearer like me. For serious warmth, the coat should fasten with multiple buttons up the front and be designed cover the upper chest, as necessary. Scarves don’t cut the wind there like a lined wool fabric does.

Thank you for this video! 🙌 It's so helpful to know how to choose the right coat for different body shapes. Do you have any tips on what coat styles work best for petite figures? 😊

I wear an arctic grade puffer coat. Where I live it gets to -40° F or -40°C. I used the conversion chart. I would love a beautiful camel hair coat, but can’t justify the few times I could wear it. I have been looking into thrifting one though. If it’s warm enough my Sherpa jacket or quilted barn jacket works. I have to shovel snow and walk my dog. I have to invest my $ in practical, warm coats and jackets.

Thanks for the video Ellena, great advice. I don't need a wool coat living in Florida, but I can definitely translate these tips over to jackets. 💗

Oooo the detail about the collars was esp. insightful for me 👍🏻I think a too big collar is a reason why I might not reach for a few of my pieces. 🤔

Also: I have a cashmere long, belted navy blue coat with dropped shoulders, low buttoned, soft, flowy coat that my mother bought for me nearly 40 years ago! It is a total classic & I will wear it forever.

Thank you for sharing all your professional secrets. All very helpful. I have a lot of coats that I love until I want to wear a blazer under them. The area under the arms and the sleeve circumferences are too restrictive to drive. I hate carrying my blazer in a separate tote. I always revert back to the same 30 year old coat that is thread-bare. (Maybe it's even older from the era of big shoulder pads.). All my other coats from that era are worn out and gone. The quilted zip out lining on this one went to shreds 20 years ago. Nothing I've tried on in recent years seems to work. Right now I don't have the time to make a cost but.maybe I will have to make that a goal to stop the madness of buying coats that won't go over blazer sleeves. Have you observed any changes to this impractical narrow sleeve trend?

I solved that problem by thrifting a beautiful 100% wool men's long winter coat.

Me neither. All my coats must have pockets. I have a few pants without pockets but the ones I wear and love all have pockets

Right now I'm selling a coat I bought last year. It's perfect: 50% wool, no pilling, long. The style is similar to the yellow coat at the beginning of the video, but mine is grey with black and yellow. Perfect from all sides! But I hate it, it drives me crazy, because it was bought for rational reasons, not because I fell in love with it :)

I find you advice on which coat for my triangle shape very helpful! Never thought about raglan sleeves. I am about to buy a coat, so the timing was perfect, also your information about the necessary wool content if we want to keep warm!

Love those comments at the end about playing, experimenting & having fun. I have followed a few YT style people now for a couple of years (I am 69, fit & rediscovered myself in recent years), my current feeling is, I don't want to "ape" trends, or feel compelled to buy a "look". I am more interested in being g myself, making mistakes, learning style "rules" then having fun without following anything too closely. Sorry, a bit unclear in what I have written - just basically, know the rules but ignore them if it works & you feel fantastic 😅

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I’m so glad the message about experimenting resonated with you! It’s SO inspiring to hear how you’ve rediscovered yourself and embraced your own style journey. Keep playing, making mistakes, and enjoying every moment of it!! ☺️

I'm an hourglass size 8-10. My bust and hips are the same measurements so I don't find belted jackets work on me because it's too much bulk on my chest. I'm short waisted so it makes me look much bustier. Stiff fabrics and tailored styled jackets look phenomenal and tres chic on my body type. Quite the opposite of your recommendations.

My mum would always say if the pockets were sewn closed and obviously not visible keep them that way as baggy pockets really spoil the look

Who is the other voice being inserted? No pockets wouldn’t work for me although, I do see what you mean by adding bulk to apple shaped bodies however, still need pockets and will look for flat or invisible pockets in future.

The one coat shape I think everyone should avoid is the cocoon coat. These are O-shaped, widest at the waist and hips, narrowing at top and bottom. Desperate designers periodically re-introduce these, but they don’t flatter anyone. I look for 100% wool, 100% cashmere, or blends of these two fibers. The lining must be breathable silk or rayon. Polyester is a misery to wear, it causes heavy sweating, the last thing we need when it’s cold.

No pockets "at the waist"... You can still have pockets.
@donnaschindlbeck745719 күн бұрын
Pockets are ok, they just need to be in the right place. Not at the waist for hourglass shape, not at the hips for pear shape, etc. Inseam pockets are fine for all.
