however, on a very recent visit to Sao Paulo and visiting many small & medium size grocery stores & supermrkets I was, compared to Western Europe, very surprised by two things : 1. It was very rare to see coffee BEANS being sold. 2. The selection offered of ground coffee was very small compared to europe. I wondered whether the reason for this is the absence for average SP workers of good quality grinding machines and hence there was no demand or culture to grind your own coffee at home ?

hey mate! I think it's more the culture to grind our own coffee. Here in Brazil we are still learning how to drink good coffee, in my opinion it's sill new for us. I've been trying special coffee since 2021 and I still need to learn a lot! And the price of the machines, the tools, even the special coffee here is expensive, people still drinks a lot bad coffee because the price it's "easier" and faster process to prepare it.

@@andresena2229 Thank you. I think what you are saying is there is a reluctance to grind your coffee due to the extra cost of grinders and maybe decent espresso machines and that pre ground is easier & more convenient. That's true and many people, at least, in france still buy ground coffee . They use it mostly now in electric drip machines. I just naively imagined that Brazil being such a huge producer of coffee would have a wonderful selection of reasonably priced bean & ground coffee on sale.

Exactly! Faster and cheaper coffee but = bad coffee. And most of them drinks more than a single cup of coffee a day, that's why it "needs" to be cheaper and faster. It is just my thought tho.
