Have you tried Wickson? It can be 26 Brix, very spicy, high acidity, pungent complex apple aromas, with mild berry, grape, pineapple, lychee notes.

I have several suggestions for these apples. 1) Since Geneva 214 is a semi-dwarf rootstock, the spacing is way too close. G214 is an experimental selection recommended for less vigorous cultivars on less fertile soil for high density 3-4' by 12' for a 13' tall final height. At a wider spacing, please consider more vigorous rootstocks that tolerate your less intensive systems such as G969, G484, G66, and G257. 2) A trellis is imperative for growth, especially on a dwarfing rootstock. A supported tree produces 20% more due to the lack of need to build excessive lignin. 3) These apples should be thinned to around five per tree, based on preliminary judgment of the video. For artificial spur extinction, floral thinning, and hand thinning, please consider using Valent Bioscience Cornell Young Apple Thinning Gauge or INRA Gauge. Each fruit requires approximately ten leaves to support growth and each extra fruit reduce vegetative development by 10%. Failure to thin results in permanent weak trees that will never fill allotted space and meet production goals. Precision crop load management can be applied. 4) Please consider spraying with calcium polysulfide or Captan(TM) for fungal control of scab. Let me know your thoughts. Thank you. Kindly, Herb

@@CumminsHerb All very good suggestions. Here are the reasons for my madness 1. I’m running out of room so I need to pack them in tighter. Having more trees, one variety per tree help reduce possible virus infection 2. I’m not trying to maximize production, just need some fruit for taste testing. 3. Trying to put in the least amount of input as long as I can still get some fruit to trial. 4. Testing for disease resistance and low maintenance varieties so I do not spray so that I can see which can handle the abuse. Thanks!

@@nickkasko2097 Thanks for letting me know. I can relate to the lack of space and heavily cropping young semi-dwarf trees can be understandable. However, if priority is testing for disease resistance and tolerance to neglect, virus infection would be the least of concerns. Malus domestica Borkh. viruses only spread by graftage of infected rootstocks or scions. Most non-commercial nursery trees and heirloom cultivars never enter a lab to undergo heat treatment or meristem propagation as there is no economical reason. Thus, the scions probably already have latent virus but don't impact production. At the very least, I am glad you have G214 instead of others that would already have fire blight infection of the rootstock, due to the non-removed suckering. Nonetheless, it would be advisable to quickly spring thin apples to eight inches apart since the current regime will make very weak trees susceptible to the slightest of abuse, regardless of future production. It is painful to see these trees that may have high mortality in a few years. Also, I would like to ask where are you located, just out of curiosity. I applaud your enthusiasm. Thanks, Herb

@@CumminsHerb northwest WA. I understand how virus infection works. Mosaic is usually transferred by scion wood. I graft hundreds every season and I used to do 10 varieties per tree. Then if one scion happened to be infected, the entire tree gets infected and I can no longer sell scion off that tree. So for this reason, I would rather have more trees, 1-2 varieties per tree to help reduce the amount of varieties that get infected.

@@nickkasko2097 Nice! I'm on Vancouver Is., so similar climate. I'm glad that you don't graft ten on a single tree anymore. If you're also growing for scion, I would really recommend crop load management to balance fruit number, size, and vigour. Getting a few petri dishes with agar and slicing the meristem as small as possible can be done at home for around $200 a set, if you're really interested. Then, graft on indicator cultivars that would show exaggerated symptoms if a virus is present, just to confirm. Most apple hobbyists don't even know or care about mosaic anyways. I've got reserved nuclear stock budwood trees on G16. Anyways, it's good to know your situation. Thanks! Hope you have a great autumn!

@nickkasko2097 I personally like firm fleshed plums like my Burgundy or my Flavor Grenade pluot. They were both amazing this year. I don't like Beauty plum because at peak ripeness it's a juice balloon with mushy texture. Methly also has nice texture.
