Thank your for sharing this Adam. I just got my mirror from Pidzoom. It's fine with me. I have already had a slow speed crash and the mirror and attachment stayed intact. 🤣

I use the long stick mirror and it works well for me. But I have thought it could take my eye out in a cutout or something, even though I wear Sun glasses, freak accidents do happen. Thanks Adam, I will definitely check it out.

Yes. Please try it out. I was looking for that post that Marty had about 5-6 years ago and could not find the source. He talked about how close he was to injuring his eye when he had fallen. I think he hit a patch of mud and then he lost control of his wheel and then crashed. Back then I was also using the long stick mirror. That incident Marty had made me lose interest in the long stick. Mine also got snagged by the string of a bulb switch in the basement when I was riding my MTen3. I never bothered to repair it since then. The DIY mirror covers so many points that the other mirrors lacked: Wide range of view, set it and forget it and less risk to eye injury were my 3 top pros. I also wear goggles so that helps in protecting my eyes also.

I happen to have this cheap mirror, originally made for handlebar mounting, but the vibrations were too strong there and often knocked it off. I just tried mounting it on a helmet visor like you have, the issue is the cheap mirror does not have a way to tighten how it attaches to the band, there's a screw, but it only adjusts tightness of one arm to the next, the arm to band joint does not have any adjustments and is just attached and too lose on vibrations. I'd have to put some maple syrup or hack to make it 'sticky' and not rotate as much. Thanks for the idea on how to attach a mirror on the helmet visor though

adam, excellent information here.. i like how you went thru the progressions of trial and error and why it didn't work.. that street you ride on is Iffy AF ! i don't know if i would ride on it with that much car traffic... keep up your stellar work Doc !
@AdamU1016
@AdamU1016 8 ай бұрын
Thanks CT! This street is one of the busiest in my neighborhood. These crazy Joyzee drivers are sometimes going 50 plus mph on a 30 mph road. I specifically chose it so I could show how effective the DIY mirror is. I honestly think city street riding can be safer than suburban riding. At least in the city, the drivers are more accustomed to PEVs so they tend to be more aware of us. In the suburbs, the drivers are used to cars and sometimes are taken aback when they see a person riding a wheel. Lol.

I don't think forgetting to put it on should be a reason to not use. That is a common issue of every option. Even the permanently secured helmet option requires verification that it is adjusted correctly, this is still subject to forgetting. A misaligned mirror is useless.
@AdamU1016

Maybe for you but in my case sometimes I don’t use it when I ride in the park or in the woods. I just toss it around inside my car trunk and not in my gear bag. I forget it sometimes since it’s not seen. That’s why I love my motorcycle jacket. The elbow, shoulder pads and spine protector are already built in. The motorcycle jacket also prevents against road rash and is also reflectively bright. The jacket covers many things I don’t have to think about. This helmet mirror is a set it and forget it gear. It is well affixed and hard to move around even at high speed. Misalignment after use is not an issue.
@oldretireddude
@oldretireddude 9 ай бұрын
@@AdamU1016 I too like the jacket approach to gear. Very convenient. While I'm not against your helmet mounted mirror at all (except that I have the same reservation that you point out about the stick mounted version) I just think your making a mountain out of a mole hill argument with respect to the hand/glove mounted mirror.
@AdamU1016
@AdamU1016 9 ай бұрын
@@oldretireddude That’s fine. We all come from different backgrounds with different priorities. You probably don’t ride around with a selfie stick camera like I do. I end up erasing most of my filming but sometimes I need footage for my KZbin channel. The point I am trying to make is that the extra gear on my wrist for me at least can be a hindrance on top of my holding the selfie stick with the same hand. Therefore, the wrist mirror whether the one with the case or just the plain mirror is not optimal for my own purpose. For you it is of no consequence and therefore is a molehill. Different strokes for different folks and that’s OK. 😊
@oldretireddude
@oldretireddude 9 ай бұрын
@@AdamU1016 That's a very good point. Holding something like the stick would certainly make a hand mounted mirror less useful. I must have missed that criteria in the video. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate your videos.

Good Call I have bought all the types of mirrors I found on Amazon and elsewhere, from arm mounted, helmet mounted to tiny glass mounted, was not happy with any of them and have not wanted to ride much in or near traffic but that one looks promising. Also I think Im usually very visible, reflective jackets, helmet lights e.t.c

We have both gone through all the hopes and disappointments in trying various mirrors. When I saw Henri’s DIY, it was a true revelation for me of how well thought out the mirror was. That is why I made this video. The DIY mirror covers so many inconsistencies which I mentioned in the video that the other mirrors had. Out of my 9 years of trying them all out, the DIY mirror outshines them all. Hope you get to try it out. Let me know how you like it.

I have tried these mirrors on my Bell MX-9 helmet. So far it doesn't work well with my progressive glasses. My eyes can't focus with the required positioning since the mirror is higher and off to side further than the focused part of the lens. I'm not done fiddling with it to see if i can make it work but at this point the mirror on a stick works better for me.
@AdamU1016
@AdamU1016 8 ай бұрын
I can see why it would not work with progressive glasses. I have those too but only use them for driving my car. My eyesight is not that bad but I am also a 50 something person coming close to my 60’s. 😮 The key thing this DIY helmet mirror does is it lets you know when there is an oncoming car behind you. I also cannot see the car that clearly on my helmet mirror but it does let me know that there is an object shaped like a car coming close to me. I would then take a quick left turn with my head to verify the oncoming car. I certainly do save multiple head turnings with the helmet mirror and that is a good thing.

After a bit more time with it the solution is to close the eye furthest away when looking at the mirror. That removes the much different view the furthest eye is getting. Fwiw: we are the same age...

Cool mirror for a bicycle helmet, but I am not downgrading helmets for it. I only wear motorcycle helmets for the road, bicycle helmet no good for EUC riding unless you doing bicycle speeds on a bike path/lane. Bike helmets won't protect you going 30+ mph and around 4000 pound boxes (cars/trucks).
