I love this game so friggin much. One of my favorite games on the Gameboy. I still remember watching you play through it for the first time. Mario's moveset was so friggin smooth and fun to use. Probably the smoothest and most versatile control scheme out of most, if not all, 2D Mario platformers.

It really is, haven't played SMB Wonder yet, but I'm surprised a lot of these controls/ideas haven't been brought back to the series yet. Also, not 100% sure but I think you may have actually introduced me to this game originally. I definitely remember talking about it with you back in the day.

I have played this back in 1994 when it was first released and loved it almost more than any other platformer. This was the best game of its series, all the Mario vs DK games after felt phony to me, but I eventually come back to this gem every so year. What a great puzzle platformer! This deservers far more recognition, even a remake - so thank you for your video!

This game was the first platformer I ever beat precisely because of the elements you mention: frequent save points, smooth difficulty curve, great level design, and tight controls. It truly was a game built for the Game Boy: its graphics were clear and easy to see, which was so often not the case (see: Donkey Kong Land). It kills me that Nintendo never releases this with all its Super Game Boy accoutrements (which you show in the video). That's truly a superior way to play the game even though it does omit Pauline's screams for help. Here's hoping that this gets the remake it deserves with arcade-quality graphics. For me personally, I hope they stick to pixel art instead of going with 3D models.

I accidentally got this as a kid, when I actually wanted Donkey Kong Land. But I asked for the "Gameboy Donkey Kong" in a shop, not knowing there was another one, and though I was sceptic because of the cover, I had no option and took it. At home I realised my mistake, yet played it anyways and had lots of fun with it, more than I would have had with DK Land which has its problems. A great classic, especially if you consider it's a bigger better version of the original DK arcade game. I never played the GBA one, so I'm looking forward to the remake.

@@MrDrBoi Having played the Land trilogy later, I agree. Land 2+3 improved a lot in terms of controls and level design and played way more like the DKC trilogy, but the first Land was not that good yet imo. The 90s were such a wonderful decade for Donkey Kong...DKC1-3, DK94, DK Land 2+3, DK64 (I like it) and Diddy Kong Racing all within just a few years...it's a shame we barely got any (good) Donkey Kong games since...which is weird since they usually sell quite well, yet Nintendo doesn't do a lot with the IP.

I'm really glad you gave this game a much deserved spotlight! I got this game on the 3DS e-shop back in 2011, but only since I had leftover money and had no idea what to spend it on, I bought it thinking it would be a remake of the arcade game but 11 year old me was surprised by how much lengthier it was and how many skills and level concepts there were, unfortunately I haven't played it since I completed it back then but it always lingered in my mind as the best DK game out there, hopefully they give it a proper remake someday!

Great video! Really hope this gets a remake next. Clearly better than M vs DK. I also got to say, that for 1994, this game was genius. All the new ideas and getting as much as they possibly could out of a gameboy title. You don't see things like this anymore at Nintendo. They can't come up with new ideas, so remakes/remasters it is. All these remakes/remasters proves gaming was better back in the day. There's a massive library of classics to pull from.

when we were kids, my friend owned this and he never could beat it and always wanted me to beat it. which i did MANY times. i didnt think much about it back then cause i personally was hoping for a more action oriented game rather than a puzzle plattformer, however looking back now this is a really great game for gameboy. i dont think i'll go back to it, but i will always remember this game :D

Love this game and it took me years to beat level 3-1 when I was a kid. Then I beat it and went on a roll for worlds and worlds. However I don't think I ever beat the game.

The only reason I knew this game existed is because of ProtonJon's LP many years ago. I so hope this game gets put on NSO, maybe next year around the release of Mario vs Donkey Kong!

@@MrDrBoi lol I had to have been about 6-8 when I played it, I recall making it a few levels in but once the game started needing you to actually start using Mario's abilities I was out. Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure that old Gameboy Pocket and the games are in this house somewhere. I remember Tetris, donkey Kong, and Tetris Attack lol. Those were great grandma's games, not that that's super relevant I just realized how old that thing is lol
