No way bud, the Germans were better in 1974. Argentina 1978 and South Africa 2010 we actually were on the brink of winning. The way we stumbled in the semi in Brasil 2014 is still beyond me...The 2022 squad in Qatar don't look able to get far. Until now at least.

Van Hanegem is veruit de allerbeste middenvelder die Nederland ooit heeft gehad! Als Cruijff de beste Nederlandse voetballer ooit is dan staat van Hanegem daar vlak achter. Ook al oogde het soms wat bonkig, De Kromme had het totaal pakket: een ongelofelijke techniek en tegelijk bikkelhard, een gigantisch spelinzicht, een gouden buitenkant links, een goede kopper, scorend vermogen, groot en sterk. En dit alles ook nog eens met slechte ogen, aan het eind van zijn carrière zag Willem bijna niets meer maar deed alles op gevoel en stond strategisch altijd goed opgesteld. Van Hanegem was samen met Cruijff de grondlegger van het gouden oranje uit de jaren 70. Cruijff zei wel eens over zichzelf dat als het een keer niet lekker ging met mijn eigen spel, dan had je niets aan mij en kon je mij beter wisselen. Dan had je veel meer aan Willem Van Hanegem want met zijn nooit aflatende werklust verzaakte hij nooit en zakte hij in tegenstelling tot mijzelf nooit door een ondergrens.

Van Hanegem is generally considered to be the best Dutch football player behind Cruijff. There seems to be a little it of bias towards modern times with this line-up, which is understandable in these times that are dominated by social media, where the younger generations are represented far more.

It may surprise a lot of you but I am from India. Yet, i have been fascinated and enamored with Dutch football all my life. I have tried to make this team in my head so many times. So can't resist putting in my take. For one, I have kept out giants I have never seen live: so no Neeskens or Cruyff in my lineup. I thought i'd go with the traditional Dutch 3-4-3. A bit of 3-3-1-2 if you'd like, just to accommodate Bergkamp. Here goes: Goalkeeper: Van Der Sar. No two ways about this. (Sub: Van Breuklen) Back 3: No doubt with the pick here, but probable Rijkaard on the right. So Rijkaard-Stam-Koeman from right to left. Middle 4: Gullit-Davids-Sneijder at the base. Need Davids and Sneijder to shore up the defence as Rijkaard needs the opportunity to strive upfield when he feels so. Above these 3 linger Bergkamp in a bit of a free role at the base of the attacking three. Unfortunately, Gullit will have more of a holding role. Top 3: I'll go with Nistelrooy in the middle. Robben on the right. Van Basten on the left. Basten could easily play in the middle as well, but he had the skill to play wide too, which Nistelrooy can't. Subs: 1. Frank De Boer in the back 3. Possibly to free up Rijkaard, who can act as a backup to Sneijder or Davids in midfield. 2. Dirk Kujt and Philip Cocu: The world's best subs, because both of them could play any position except centre back or centre forward. 3. Robin Van Persie: Versatile forward. As a wide substitute to the front three. Would be third choice as centre forward though, behind Nistelrooy and Basten. So there... my Vodka helped me pick a 15-man dream squad :)

The four best and attractive teams ever were Hungaria 1954, Brasil 1970, the Netherlands 1974 and Brasil 1982. I sometimes dream of their fabulous players. The only two of the famous Netherlands squad of 1974 I never understood was goalkeeper Jongbloed, a bit average, why no Jan van Beveren???? The other one I don't understand is Wim Jansen. A good player but why not Wille van der Kuijlen, one of the most underrated players of the golden generation of the seventies or Frans Thijssen, who later made fame with Ipswich Town in their glory days.

Devided in so called "zuilen" where all groups and religions were living apart....there was a big division between the southern Catholics and the Holland mainly protestant people. Ajax (jewish) and Feyenoord (protestant) were the main teams in Holland and outside Holland there was PSV in the Catholic south coming up stronger and stronger. The players from PSV were mainly Catholics from the Brabant and Limburg regions. The all time best striker from the Eredivisie was PSV player Willy van der Kujjlen from Limburg. But not van Beveren who was from Amsterdam himself and also played for Sparta Rotterdam. He then refused to come to Ajax but choose PSV instead (where he became a cult hero). This was seen as betrayal in the 70s for someone from Holland. Van Beveren had a very strong character and didn't agree with the privileges Cruijff got: Behaving very unprofessional, arriving late at training sessions, refusing to play several matches, not taking the 70 qualify series serious, then playing with 2 iso 3 Adidas stripes as the only player in the team. But especially getting more money than the others of the team. Van Beveren then spoke up against this behaviour and then Cruijff went to the coach and said. "PSV players out or I am out" Cruijff was a very good player but quit an asshole as well. Because on many occasions such as in the WC 70 and EC 72 qualifiers and WC end tournement 1978 he even refused to play for private reasons. His wife opened a show store etc...With Cruijff AND van Beveren but also vd Kuijlen Netherlands would have become world champions at least in one of the two tournaments I am and many are convinced.....Cruijff knew he made a big big mistake he recognised this later on in his life. Van Beveren even had to fly from.the country because he and his children were threatened to be killed by Cruyff followers, all heated up by the Holland pro Cruijff press.....But I believe the main problem was the overall amateurish of the Dutch association in the 70s. How could one man be able to decide about a whole team and destroy a team and get away with it time after time....The devisions between the south and the west only disappeared in the 80s when PSV players made a significant contribution to winning the Europeans. But even then Hans van Breukelen was constantly attacked by the press from Holland to be substituted by an Ajax or Feyenoord goalie. He himself declared: van Beveren was my big example. But after what happened to him I deceided: "I am NOT going to bend over for the Holland pressure from the Ajax and Feyenoord group and the anti PSV sentiments in the press. By doning so he paved the way for the emancipation of the southern generations after him....

This can't be based on football. The team is narrow. Who is going to defend the flanks or overload when robben cuts in. Fillip cocu should be part of any all time great team although he missed a penalty. He is able to play every position on the field. Edgar Davids is also super.
