As primarily a goalie (although I've been skating out more), you have to shelf the backhand, otherwise someone like me can get my pads on it (I can still pull out split saves at 43). But this move is basically my achilles heel as a goalie, you have to open up moving laterally and it's hard not to overcommit on the fake.

Great to have a goalies perspective! That's what I found too, if the goalie is very good or you do a bad job selling they will likely make it to the post in which case you have to elevate the backhand. Any i've been stopped it was because I didn't get the backhand high enough. Appreciate the insight!

I've been going backhand for years but I'm now realizing that I've been coming in from the wrong side! It makes it really hard to get the goalie to bite, whereas coming in with the forehand towards the middle of the ice makes the goalie naturally bite, even before making your move

For sure! I had that same problem too, I knew I wanted to finish with the anchor and backhand but I didn't have the entry quite down leading to more missed chances.

Keep working on those soft drags! It's hard to diagnose without video but based on what you've said I would look at your hip drop, heel pressure on your (non-dragging foot) and y-angle (non-dragging foot).

Love it! My advice would be don’t try to force it in a game or in tryout. The goal is to do it enough times in practice to where it comes out automatically in game. If you haven’t seen the Train 2.0 video on the soft drag go check it out!
