What's YOUR everyday carry for prayer? Bible? Journal? LOTH? LOTR?

Definitely the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Baronius Press. It's beautiful, functional, and has Gregorian Chant in the back. Why no review of the Douay-Rheims? That's my preferred "reading and studying" Bible.

LOTR, LOL!! I also got a kick out of using the term "Everyday Carry". I usually only hear this when it's related to knives, flashlights, or firearms. This was the first time I've heard this term when talking about a Bible. But hey, it's appropriate, we should be carrying a Bible around for sure. I usually just use a Bible app on my phone, but there is something about having a physical Bible and marking it up with pens, highlighters, sticky notes, etc. That being said my everyday Bible is The RSVCE 2nd Edition. I have a leather edition from Ignatius Press. I have noticed the pages starting to break away from the binding near the back of the Bible so that's disappointing. How is your hardcover holding up? I'm going to subscribe to your channel and see whachya got. :)

yeah please don't throw your Bible...I was taught by the nuns many years ago in Catholic school that you must treat sacred objects with respect therefore if your drop it or throw it you must lightly give it a kiss it to show reverence. If you need to dispose of a sacred object or book it must be either burned or buried...you can't just chuck it into the trash. Nice video, will look in an EDC version of my Bible.

The "bendy-ness" of the one Bible you showed, indicates that it is printed and bound correctly so that the grain of the paper is running vertically in the page. It means there is no stress on the binding and the binding won't break. If it hadn't been bendy, it would mean the grain was running horizontally, the pages would not be flexible, that would put stress on the binding, and the back would break. So bendy is good.

I also have the same small blue RSV-CE. I customized mine by adding 3 more ribbons. Simply cut a small rectangular square from a piece of card stock, such as a file folder. Make it slightly smaller than the width of the spine and about 2 in long. Cut your ribbons and super glue them to the piece. Insert the piece in the top, trim to length, and singe with a lighter! Made a space for the ribbon already there, and the other 3 are each a different color: red, green, and blue. The whole Bible fits in my cargo pocket to take to Mass. I can mark all the readings and the Psalms!

Hi Edmund. Well, if you're talking Catholic Bibles, the legitimate options are the "New American," the "Jerusalem," the Catholic edition of the RSV, the 2nd edition of the Catholic RSV, or if you're really old school the "Douay Rheims." I lean towards the Catholic RSV mainly because the RSV was accepted by Catholics, Anglicans, Eastern Orthodox, and many Protestants. It's often been called the most ecumenical BIBLE.

Some other options include the Knox Bible published by Baronius Press which is the work of Ronald Knox a priest and convert from the Anglican Church. Knox completely translated the bible over a ten year period, and his work is highly regarded. The ESV is available in a Catholic edition. It was initially accepted by the Church in India, and will be adopted for Liturgical use in Britain by the December of 2024, as I understand. A number of handsome editions are available. For those who need to economize there are paper back editions with sewn bindings.

One maybe helpful suggestion for those out there who have paperbacks and need them to last a while. For paperback books of any kind that I've had in the past, I went out and bought a roll of clear Sc0tch packing tape (the wide stuff) and ran a strip of it along the spine. Then I trimmed the excess at the top and bottom. I also did the same thing with the edges on the front and back covers where your thumbs would go, only I used the regular clear Sc0tch tape for that. Finally, I would wrap the whole thing in a brown paper cover. For me, it didn't need to be pretty; it just needed to work. Just a thought.

So I have personally carried a pocket Bible with me almost as long as I've been serious with my faith, which is 7 or 8 years now. I wear cargoes for this reason; my wife thinks I'm insane lol. I almost have to get a new one every winter due to snow and such messing up the pages and wearing down the binding. that is at least until I've found the zippered Bible by Ignatius press. Highly durable, which definitely makes up for lack of aesthetics.

You should have mentioned pocket (or very compact) Douay-Rheims-Challoner BIbles. They are hard to come by, but I have a couple, one of which still is available, from Baronious Press, in some kind of synthetic or cheaper leather covers (I'm not sure which), with two ribbon bookmarks. The old Catholic Truth Society Douay-Rheims-Challoner Bible is not too hard to find used. It is even smaller, but quite thick, thus bulky, and the Douay-Rheims-Challoner text is a British one, not the usual American Douay-Rheims-Challoner. It's hardbound, the paper is easy to handle and to turn. It's worth looking into if thickness is not a problem.

I'm an old man. My everyday setup is the Olive Tree Bible and Maps app on my phone or iPad. It lets me quickly switch among different English translations, or foreign language translations, tap for notes, etc., in a number of different translations. I don't know Hebrew or Greek, but if I look at the French, German or Czech translations, I can pretty much figure out what was going on in the original or what I have to do more research into. This and Biblegateway come in handy when a friend of mine calls. He watches three masses in two languages on TV every Sunday, and often a Spanish reading literally will not say the same thing as the English reading even though they're supposed to be the same passage. (The Spanish usually agrees with the Douay-Rheims.) The Olive Tree app and Biblegateway then help me get to the bottom of things.

Yeah, Tyrone already mentioned it, but a ribbon is not a tassel. Tassels are usually string or cord-like with a fringy thing on the end. A ribbon is a ribbon. But seriously, I enjoyed your video a lot. Like the kid stars too. 😃 I really like my new CTS NEW CATHOLIC BIBLE Presentation edition. It's a hard cover but very compact and it feels good in the hand... three ribbons: maroon, gold, and red. It's a new Anglicized version of the Jerusalem Bible, the one Mother Angelica liked. The psalms are the Grail translation and it was published in London.

I'm 25 and only really started honestly reading my Bible this year. I never really have before. I started with the Bibles my Mother has, the big St. Joseph Edition: Good News Translation and the New Testament Good News Translation: St. Joseph Edition. I wanted to pick my own, a Bible I chose and would be 'mine'. Technically, I went with two. The Douay Rheims and the Jerusalem Bible. I love everything about the Douay Rheims ~ reading scripture feels so nourishing. Much better for me than the Good News Translation. It's a flexible black leather cover with gold leaf including the medal of St. Benedict, gold leaf sidings, a ribbon. I love the format, the cream paper, the lovely scent of it. But what if I wanted to read the Bible in plain language? The Jerusalem Bible fills that perfectly. But the Douay Rheims is my favorite, and I would absolutely *love* the little black Douay Rheims in the same form factor as the little blue one, to have with me at all times. ❤️

@@tony1685 Thank you for the warning, I appreciate it; this passage however does not mean that. In accordance with Catholic Church teaching, an infant must be baptized as soon as possible, it is the responsibility of the parents. An unbaptized baby that dies goes to Abraham's Bosom, and cannot enter Heaven. There is a prayer however, that has been granted a wonderful indulgence to be able to baptize these poor souls, so they can get to Heaven and enjoy the Beatific Vision.

@@tony1685 Ohhh, that last sentence was devastating to read, I'm so sorry. What did Satan do to make you give up the Truth? There is no salvation outside the walls of the One, True Church you were fooled into leaving, and all the answers to all your questions are readily available in the Catholic Church; that's the problem with the things you mention! You were lured away with questions that have become answers in of themselves with no respect to hearing an honest answer, such as "God is too loving for Hell to exist, and for people to be sent there", it is uninformed opinion that gives rise to apathy and satisfaction in of itself, leaving the person no desire to investigate. It is a trap from Satan, thus the stagnation of the mind never going beyond its own opinion, its own truth; Satan was the first to have his own truth. I appreciate your dialogue, but I trust the Bible and the Church Fathers more than the musings of protestant minds over the past couple centuries; heretics, who are not in Heaven, for they denied and opposed the Church Christ founded. Men Christ Himself warned against in Sacred Scripture, the false prophets to come in His name and thieves who break in the sheep pen, not through the gate. Abraham is in Heaven with our Lord in spirit, the Resurrection is when the soul will be reunited with the body. All who go to Heaven are very much alive, more than us, and they enjoy the Beatific Vision. The gates of Heaven were opened when our Lord died on the Cross. Who taught you otherwise? Surely a man, who thought he knew better than the Church's explanations on Scripture, the selfsame Church who wrote them. This man surely had the Truth on things and interpretations, and in no way was one of the many false prophets to come in the name of Christ, as He so forewarned Himself. 'Endless conscious torment', I don't know where on earth you got that idea but it's nonsense. "You will not die the death" is in reference to damnation. Satan tempted Eve contradicting what God had said. Who told you otherwise? Infant Baptism: It's Necessity on page 187 of the Catechism of the Council of Trent expounds the beauty of Church teaching with many quotes from the Bible, the true meaning of the Word of God in its fullness, which Protestants lack because they do not want. They know better, like Lucifer in Heaven knew better, they went their own way like Lucifer went his own way. Protestants have free will, they use it. Of course Paul writes of the necessity of a grown adult professing their Faith in Christ Jesus before being baptized!! What good would it do otherwise? That doesn't rule out baptizing our babies into the Faith! Why would a parent deprive their baby of such a necessary sacrament? And what are they being baptized into? The Church. The Church is the keeper of the Faith. Protestants quote Scripture like their father, who in the desert quoted Scripture to tempt Jesus; Who responded each time with Scripture in it's true meaning. Satan bent the meaning of Scripture to his own purpose, to tempt our Lord, who revealed that each of these verses did not mean as Satan suggested. How is this so? Satan used individual verses alone, by themselves, neglecting the wholeness and oneness of the Word of God. If another verse, chapter, or book in the Bible contradicts the understanding of a passage; then the understanding of that passage is false. Protestants will do a gym's worth of mental gymnastics to preserve their interpretations, fully showing they have no interest in Truth, but what they *want* to be Truth. Such as thinking James and Jude in the Bible *really* didn't mean salvation is attained by Faith and Works, when they write so plainly, and they further deny our Lord who said so as well, that if you loved Him you would keep His commandments. Keeping a commandment is a work, is it not? Faith is separate. Yet they deny this to purport Romans was about 'Faith alone', when Paul actually was simply writing to a pagan audience explaining that their Faith did not come from themselves, but it was a gift from God. The Catholic Church did not one day come into existence in 325 AD, St. Justin Martyr in the year 150 wrote of the Catholic Mass. The history of Christianity is Catholic, the Bible is a Catholic book, the books within it were selected by a Pope, the King James Version was written in protest of the Douay Rheims Version which is an English translation of the Latin Vulgate first translated by St. Jerome in the 4th century using documents no longer in existence. And if you do believe the Church spontaneously came into existence in 325 AD from a council, the Holy Spirit therefore just stopped working for 1200 years until Martin Luther or Calvin showed up? Christ couldn't found a lasting Church, so a man had to do what God made flesh could not? Do not forget that our Lord in John 14 promised the Holy Ghost to be with His Church and guide it. I'll include a quote from the Douay-Rheims, John, Chapter 14, "16 And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever. 17 The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, nor knoweth him: but you shall know him; because he shall abide with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while: and the world seeth me no more. But you see me: because I live, and you shall live. 20 In that day you shall know, that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them; he that is that loveth me. And he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. 22 Judas saith to him, not the Iscariot: Lord, how is it, that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world? 23 Jesus answered, and said to him: if any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard, is not mine; but the Father's who sent me. 25 These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you. 26 But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid." DRV The footnotes offer further explanation; "Chap. 14. Ver. 16. 'Paraclete.' That is, a comforter: or also an advocate; inasmuch as by inspiring prayer, he prays, as it were, in us, and pleads for us. - *Ibid.* 'For ever.' Hence it is evident that this Spirit of truth was not only promised to the persons of the apostles, but also to their successors through all generations. Ver. 26. 'Teach you all things.' Here the Holy Ghost is promised to the apostles and their successors, particularly, in order to teach them all truth, and to preserve them from error." I know it's a lot I responded with, but it is absolutely heartbreaking that you fell into the protestant trap, and furthermore teach this false doctrine.

Comparing it to the red zipper Ignatius compact Bible the font and layout is exactly the same (even the page numbers are exactly the same!). That being said. I do like the Oxford for it's ribbon holder placement, it does have slightly whiter pages which is more pleasant to my eyes and the hard cover is nice to the touch. While I liked the ignatius for the protection the constant zipping and unzipping can get a little annoying and a little in the way. I have been using the full size Ignatius RSV 2nd edition faux leather as my daily but I think I'm going to swap for the Oxford for a while and see if I like it.

yeah that zipper was cool for like a month and then I was done with it. That big RSV faux leather one is super nice, it's what we decked all the catechesis classrooms out with. I have a hard time using it in prayer though for some weird reason. It feels almost too special and untouchable lol. Thanks for the comment!!! When can I start promoting YOUR youtube channel?????

Haha. I understand about praying with the bigger RSV. I had to rip that band aid off when I started underlining and writing notes in it to help pray in it. Once I did though it was glorious. The only small issue now is I used it so much the ribbons are starting to fray. And I'm hoping to put my first videos up in August. Actually going to be shooting my first video tomorrow! I'll let you know.

@@EdmundMitchell Im down to 1 now (Kjv) I gave my mom 1 (Rsv) and donated the New world translation (Jw) . I now have apps for every bible. So much more convenient. I really wanna get a Duoay Rheims and A 1611 kjb with Apocrypha. Septuagint too. Ah heck, I wanna collect them all. Tyndale. Etc Once I get a place to keep them of course. I've been homeless for a while now. But God always provides. I somehow always get what I need when I really need it. No such thing as a coincidence. Only SYNCHRONITIES !

Little guy peeking in the back-cute!! As for Bibles, I’m a Bible collector-or would that be a Bible collectoress?? Anyway, I collect bibles so I have many favorites. I have the little Ignatius New Testament that you have, and yes, the only drawback is that it doesn’t have the OT as well. (No meditating on Leviticus, as you mentioned! 😉) I really want the little RSV with the zipper-that would be perfect for tossing in my purse. I have a very small KJV with a zipper, but I don’t like the King James because of it’s anti-Catholic slant. I guess my favorite Catholic carry Bible would be the pocket edition Douay-Rheims by Baronius Press. The language is a little archaic, but it’s a nice looking hardback with a leather-like covering and gold gilded pages, with two ribbons. Check it at at Baronius Press. Thanks for the video.

Tassels = Ribbon Bookmarks, and that 'Gold' thing on the leather cover, you meant 'embossing' or 'gold stamping'. Love the way you go on describing the features really ad-libbing! I guess this is meant for US Catholics, although the English-speaking Catholic audience is a worldwide one... There's the Anglicised NRSV as well as New Jerusalem Bibles, the latter of which exist in compact editions. But some 'thinline' editions have been released for the NRSV, too.

I think its from Oxford your new favorite, and imo the Catholic Bibles out of the UK are far superior in design and quality than American Catholic Bibles. American Catholicism in general (speaking as part of it myself) suffers from a ‘famine of beauty’ and design in general, again imo. Even many US Catholic websites or event marketing, especially targeted at millennial Catholics, miss the mark and start venturing into cringe territory for trying too hard to nail a modern aesthetic but it almost always comes across as contrived or inorganic and that bleeds over into American Catholic publishing, even in the design, layout, and binding of the Holy Bible which is the Word of God and should be lifted up onto a higher level because of its content. Apologies for my rant on this, but you seem design conscious so wanted to share my thoughts. I carried that small blue New Testament when living in Seoul because I could easily carry it anywhere. These days I don’t carry a Bible but only a rosary and a copy of the prayer book Blessed Be God by Preserving Christian Publications.

OmG why you just throw the bible (2:39), do that in front of a theologians or bible scholars and surely they will scold you... just like our priest who is also a bible scholar, one time I change the position of the bible on the shelves, I just put it up standing, the original position was laid reverently or lying down and he scolded me when he saw it, he told me that I must respect the bible because it is the word of God, that we should respect it with due reverence.

The Bibles are almost the same. The Catholic bible will have approvals in the front called a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur and has some additional books like Esther andJudith that the Prot. bible does not have. The translations are varied as the Protestant versions however, but old standbys like the King James or New American, etc. are the same.

I need to know the best Bible in large, or giant print. I believe that woukd be the NRSV-CE, because of the translation...But am wondering if the DR would. be better . I have a good collection of Bibles..... but cannot read most of them anymore. I loved the little blue Ignatius one... It would be so easy to tuck into my bag.. I have at least two Ignatius Bibles... One is a blue paperback,,, The print is bold, so even though it is small, I can see it ...most of the time.
