I got this camera for free in the streets haha. Some guy said he never really used it and since he seen me out shooting, he thought maybe I would get better use of it. 💪🏽

Your statement at 6:50 “every photographer needs … “ is why I have an F100. I had an F5 but that was plenty hefty and so it was sold. The F100 weighs less and does 90%-95% of what the F5 will do and what it can’t do are things that don’t matter to me. If the shooting situation is tricky or fast moving it’s the F100. Film is too expensive to waste on blurred images or “almost got the photo” shots because I took a fully manual camera because I need some sort of hipster street cred.

The F100, is nowhere as well built as an F5. I actually love the weight of the F5 as it naturally stablises the rather heavy Nikon lenses on the body. From the moment you hold an F5, you'd know that you have something very special in your hands. F100 is lifesaver when you really have to reduce the weight you carry, but it does have its weaknesses. The latch, the loose diopter lens, the plastic rewind fork, etc etc.

Minolta Maxxum 7000 is dirt cheap and images look like they taken on a mirroless. The minolta 50mm 1.7 is razor sharp. Just a suggestion for people getting into film on a tight budget that want a lot of camera.

7000 owner there. You get 50/1.7 and 70-210/4 beercan and have top-notch options for 80% of usable focal lengths. While 7000 feels a bit more loose than F100, it also costs like 5 times less in my region and there is no way you can break it (almost impossible). F-801/801s, however, has reliability compatible with these two, while costs as 7000 and feels as F100.

When I took my first trip to Europe I chose my F100 and a Kodak Retina IIIC as my main shooters. I don’t think I could have chosen any better. The Retina was for classy B&W shots & night shots, but that F100.. wow.. just perfect!

My F100 has a special place in my heart. It is the camera with which I returned to film after a very long absence. And since Nikon DSLRs were what caused me to defect to digital it was only fitting that I returned to film with a Nikon. I had been curious about this camera for some time when one day my future camera appeared in the used Nikon case at my local camera store. Wahoo! All the controls were there and familiar so it became mine and the gateway to more film cameras. lol

Another modern film camera to consider is the Minolta Alpha/Maxxum 9. It’s probably more camera then most people will ever need. I believe it was Minolta’s last professional camera before they were bought by Sony.

I sold my first F100 too and recently bought another! I have a bunch of AF-D lenses and the F100 is a great platform for these. Thanks for another awesome video, you choose interesting and timely topics!

I'm obsessed with my F100. Pretty much the only 35mm I use these days, aside from my F5. You can definitely change aperture on G lenses with the front dial though-you might have a custom option set to disable that. You can't use E lenses though without it being stuck wide open.

Totally agree. I used the F-90X for ag s took abroad & it’s just reliable. The F-100 was an upgrade & feels every bit modern w/ Af-s & G lens

The Nikon F100 is easily one of the best film cameras for convenient operations. One of the best things is that F-mount G/AF-S lenses are fully functional with both the F100 and the Nikon Z cameras. Paring the F100 and something like the Z6II is quite convenient.

You missed a super important reason to get something like the F100 (a modern film body): the use of stabilized lenses. No more blurry photos when shooting at low shutter speeds. Tamron make two stabilized primes; a 35mm and 45mm, and also a 24-70 f2.8. Nikon and Tamron (maybe Sigma too?) do a 70-200 stabilized. Nikon does some longer focal length stabilized primes like the 105mm.

I know this is from 7 months ago but you really should try the nikon f5. I have had a f100 and its actually the camera that got me to shoot film after a long hiatus but the f5 is built like a tank. anyways I am actually doing the same thing with my f5. taking it on a trip to maine because it has all the auto features and honestly its fun to shoot.

Nice review on the F100. I have one I picked up about 2yrs ago and I love it. About the G lenses on the F100, the apreture control is possible through the front dial. I have a 50mm F1.8 AF-S G lens and can set all my apretures from F1.8 to F16 on the F100.

Dude you’re funny AF! Totally love my Nikon F100. It always baffles my mind when folks relegate this camera to its plastic door release. This camera is so much more than that. When it was released there was no way I could afford one so any day we can buy a $2500 camera for $250 is a great day. I love shooting mine with my Tamron 45 1.8. Great video Isaac!

Nikon made the best film cameras ever and the f100 was the best of the best I owned 4 of them at one time. Can you imagine seeing a photographer walking around with 4 cameras at one time well that was me and each one had a different film in it. I always believed that the film must match up with water you are shooting.

For those who shoot Canon, the EOS-3 is the peer to the F-100. The EOS-3 was marketed to the brain surgeons and $500/hr lawyers; it's typically a much better value than the flagship EOS-1 these days. The EOS-3 stands a much better chance to have been a closet queen rather than treated like shared rental bowling shoes in the bowling alley. I suspect the same for the F-100. As for the Contax G1, I have one too and all three lenses. This _is_ a closet queen. Cool to look at; cool to hold; cool to fondle. It's not a great camera in use though. Neither is it very mechanically robust.

Yes! I have three N80s that each cost less than $30. They get sticky but I’ve mustered the patience to clean them with q-tips and alcohol. Having used a D750 for years the transition to N80 or F100 is easy peasy.

The British pronunciation "nihkahn" is not "correct". The Japanese pronunciation is "knee-kon" is if anything closer to the American pronunciation.
@tonyhayes9827

Brilliant, when you said it's America we say `N eye kon' Awesome. I think the Japanese actually say `Knee kon' Nar kon would be much better! I think technically, in English `N eye kon' is correct. If you want to pronounce the `i' a short 'i' rather than a long 'i' it should be spelt Nikkon with a double consonant. So I think as far as English goes the Americans have got it right. But man what would I know. I'm Strine mate. lol (That's Australian for Australian). Do you know it auto focuses G lenses?

The F100 is awesome camera. The deal breaker is the flimsy film door. After having two doors broken I sold mine to have peace of mind. You find lots of bodies without the film doors for cheap. It is a pity to that amazing camera. Also it is a great business opportunity. opportunity
