Monster is well known as a masterpiece in the anime community, but I would say there are three reasons why it's not talked about much or seen by many. First, it's an older anime and by that nature less people watch it. Second, it is very much a slow burn and longer thriller that's more on focused on well written characters and mature themes rather that action, making it hard for newer, casual watches to get into it. Lastly, even if someone wanted to pick it up, it was actually not legally available to watch anywhere until like last year, meaning for a long-time people had to find it in other places if they wanted to watch it. I'm glad you are watching this masterpiece though. Even if not many people watch it, I know you will enjoy it and be able to appreciate its maturity.
@Krawbs4 ай бұрын
I concur with these reasons. I am so happy the community overwhelmingly voted for this. I was sure the younger anime fans and casuals would vote for a newer anime.

I think the reason we don't see MONSTER much is mainly because the original manga is from 30 years ago, and the anime is already 20 years old, making it a rather old show. Also, since Urasawa-sensei is one of Japan's top manga artists, the manga has a high level of completeness. Among his works, MONSTER was one of his representative works and was very popular. This can also be said about Vinland Saga, but when a manga is very well done, the anime adaptation tends to be judged more harshly. However, personally, I think MONSTER was also animated without sacrificing the quality of the original manga.

This is probably the least "anime" anime out there, it doesnt do anime tropes and is more like a realistic thriller tv show. It's one of those shows that can be a bit complicated to undestand, but even if you dont "get it", it's still very enjoyable, just watch it with an open mind. Also, watch the ed every few episodes, it sometimes changes and is important for later in the story (Or just watch it once, it's fine). Hope you enjoy it, Monster is one of the most acclaimed of Naoki Urasawas work, and i garantee it will not disappoint. Edit: It has come to my knowledge that upon adding Monster to their catalog, Netflix had a lot of licensing issues and had to change a lot of the soundtrack and even had to remove the vocals from the ed, this is quite a problem since Monster is heavily atmosfere driven and their choice of ost to replace it can be a bit questionable, but i guess you will have to stick to it unless you're willing to watch it pirated. Make a reaction to the ed, there is the version with vocals on KZbin... man, fuck Netflix.

The author is very well known in Japan. He's not *as known* in the western anime community because most of his works are clearly targeted at an adult audience, not for their violent themes but rather their realistic and historical context. He doesn't simply set Monster in Germany, he takes into account the whole political and societal sphere of Germany at that time and weaves it flawlessly into his story. As a german myself, I was surprised to see how extremely accurate many of the depictions in Monster are. The author always goes the extra mile for details like this and does proper research to be culturally respectful but without holding back either.

Monster is a beautiful slow burn show. Each episode usually has a lot to unpack both in terms of characterization and what the show wants to saw. Luke, you are going to see some of the best the humanity has, some of the worst that humanity has and some things that are just going to make you want to pull your hair out. Take your time and really digest this show, it's not one that gives out the answers so easily, and lot of it is left to interpretation. I'm gonna enjoy watching this with you, and I hope you come to love it as well.

I love all the little implicit bits of Tenma's personality that we get in this episode. it's true... he is a bit distant from those around him. he's a foreigner in this country, and while he's clearly gotten where he is on hard work, skill, and talent, he's also been boosted by opportunists that Tenma is still convinced he owes for the doors they've opened. he also works long, late, erratic hours, and is constantly exhausted. he'd rather devote his energy to the important work he's doing, rather than the chore of workplace politics. but workplace politics find him anyway. and I think this is why Dr. Becker doesn't really envy Tenma, despite Tenma being a genius who frequently outshines the abilities of everyone around him. Dr. Becker seems almost a little too content to rely on Tenma's talents, because when Tenma works hard, others get to take it easy. the ecosystem of Tenma's work environment feels very authentic too... it's that phenomenon where the paper pushing administrative side of the company is totally disconnected from the workers who do the laborious part of the job. the people who rise to the top, in an environment that runs on nothing but clout chasing, are the schmoozers... and while Tenma is polite, we've just popped in on the part of his career where he'll have to decide how far his manners will go, and where he'll draw the line. this is a man with an uncommon ability as a surgeon. he is a genius, and his dedication to medicine is real. it's in stark contrast with the elitists that run this institution, and the question now is... can something that runs this deep really be fixed? I really love Naoki Urasawa's writing... it's like the story is all hook. as soon as you get a satisfying answer, you'll come up with another handful of compelling questions. Pluto was like this too... I hope you get the chance to watch that one someday as well.

I recently read the Manga for *Monster* not that long ago too cuz I wanted to revisit the story & it was freaking PERFECT! Everything ive watched or read by *Naoki Urasawa* has been Amazing! Looking forward to this journey! Monster is in my top 10 anime along with Vinland Saga and Hunter x Hunter. First I'll start by saying this isn't a historical series so if you want to look up certain events for better sociopolitical context then you don't need to worry about spoilers. Second, this is a series rich with themes and complex characters. It only gets better the more you take your time to think about the characters and their morals, beliefs and ideologies. Finally, Monster is a series with a full cast of adult characters and like Vinland Saga, it doesn't 'feel like anime'. So hopefully it scratches that itch you had of wanting more mature anime

Shows like Rainbow Nisha, One Outs, Tatami Galaxy, and Legend of the Galactic Heroes are all in the top 100 of anime, yet they seem to be overlooked by many reaction channels because they're considered too old. If someone were to react to these gems, it would surely attract a lot of fans who have been waiting for a more prominent reactor to engage with these classics.

Monster is great and the first dozen or so episodes are very gripping. It's hard to stop once you do it. It's great length -- for a drama rather than a shonen -- does mean it requires a lengthy commitment of time and emotional energy, especially because it doesn't really have the sort of seasonal breaks or stopping points (though it does have arcs). It's more or less one continuous high-drama story...

One thing you will notice about Monster is that it is brimming with atmosphere. From the very first frame to the ending. It's so deliberately bleak. It's also what makes the moments of humanity so good as well. I have to say the theme at 21:00 is different from what I remember. It's hard to miss since the original piece (if im not mistaken) is very creepy.

That's right, on Netflix they changed the soundtrack of some scenes, the one you mentioned is one of them. There in the original soundtrack there was a kind of violin or cello that generated suspense. Also at the beginning of the chapter when Eva was with Tenma in the room there was music playing that was not in the original.

@@MrThompson96 I see. Thanks for clarifying things! It sucks since the original soundtrack is kind of iconic.

It's the first time I've come across this anime, and boy, I'm hooked! I'm already halfway into the second episode, and I thought to come here and thank you and everyone who voted. I'm glad you aren't bent on views and you're more interested in the heart of the content, and I share the same views with you in regard to the choice Tenma had to make. I have no idea what the series will be about, but my theories revolve around two possibilities: 1. The easy one - there's a monster that possesses people to do things, and considering the girl's repetition of "kill", she might have been possessed to murder her family. 2. Revelation, chapter 13 & 17 - we see verses from the Revelation (from the Bible) at the start of the show, and I think the shows "Monster" might be hinting at the interpretation John (writer of Revelation) gives for the heads and horrns of the Beast in Relation 17, verses 9-14. The Monster could be the world/political powers, from the Director, to the celebrities and political figures that he chooses to prioritise. Either way, I'm excited to see where the show goes, and your reactions to it as well

AHHHHH THE MUSIC IS SOOOO GOOD edit: make sure to watch the ED with vocals (there is also a second ED) for some reason there are versions without vocals and a version with only one ED. The ED's and OP are like top 5 for me.

This anime is so dark and I remember I was traumatized by many scenes. It has so many great characters and is so serious and mature

Yep, it also is surprising heartwarming at times

OOOH, this didn't get recommended to me until you hit episode 2, but I have to watch in order. I am not sure I have seen the whole series (I think it stopped being available partway through), but I did read the whole series, and this is a faithful representation. Strapping in for the roller coaster ride.

It could also be that it actually happened often but the incident with the Turkish lady opened Tenma's eyes to it

I am also a novice in anime community (been here for around 1 and a half years) and came to know about this series 4 months ago. And was not able to pick this up. But now that you are also reacting to it, I guess I will watch it together with you. I have also only watched episode 1.❤ But I have watched Pluto (Another work of Monster's author). So, I think that the girl has been hypnotized by someone rather than being psychologically shocked.👍🤔
