In this weeks video i show you the FOCUSING TECHNIQUE i use when i am out on field photographing textures and patterns. Although this technique can also be used on any landscape where you are unsure if your final image will be as you expected when you return home and view it on a larger screen. I think that spending a little more time when out on field to make sure that you have definitely captured the best image possible is worth the extra effort. The fantastic shapes and patterns on the northumberland coast were well worth exploring and i spent the time focusing in on these. Thanks to Adrian for the timel apse footage.
(This is my on field technique only and does not show the blending in post processing.)

Really love these photos. Between the panorama and square shots of the sandstone texture, I liked the square shot better. It kept my attention more focused on the contained movement of the lines. It drew me in more. On a side note, though, both shots are wonderful. If I had not known what you were shooting, I would have thought I was looking at wood grain. If you ever get back to the Pacific Northwest, you might find the southern Oregon Coast worth exploring. From Bandon to Gold Beach there are wonderful rock formations. It would be great to see what you could do with them. (Loved your videos from the Olympic Rainforest!)

@@PaulthomsonphotographyUk Hello Paul. Lovely shot of the lighthouse. I paused you @ 6:11 to do an exercise that my father and I would do if we were out and about without our cameras, and part of the philosophy of this exercise comes from large format "Field or View" cameras, which were more "de-rigueur" and which we oft would be lugging about. It was when you saw something worthy, you'd take a moment as if you were setting up a tripod, compose then draw an imaginary box around it as if you'd taken the shot. Sometimes if say detritus on the sand, or some kelp on the sand looked particularly lovely, you'd take a stick and actually draw a box around it, then you had the ability to, in your arrogance, sign it! I've seen two compositions right off in the frame at that time point I paused. Acually being there, these may not work or have enough texture or contrast, but see: Lower left corner in toward the middle left bottom of the frame, your right hand is pointing along the upper line of my little box, and I'm framing the dark part of that rock, from the curve down. There is a crack and 3 little rocks in a triangle, a large rock and pebbles in the crack, from the bottom of the frame up to show the shadow and curve of that large outcrop with the light on just a bit of the top and including the one behind with the dark line in it. Signed Bongé 😇 And behind you under your left elbow there's and interesting little vale with some rocks in it and maybe "Is that water?" and some lovely and subtle patterns going on there! Also, this exercise was fun if what you saw for any particular reason wouldn't be capable of being photographed, due to light or just not enough contrast to make it stand out, you could still acknowledge the beauty of it and it also keeps your seeing, honed and clear. Sorry for going on far too long. Watching the rest of your video now. Sorry Paul, I'm doing it again while @ 14:25 you're engaged in a very fine little composition, can't wait to see the result. I'm looking at the very right bottom corner of the frame, at the little ovoid depression and what appear to be pebbles or features of the rock itself and the glint of wetness on the top of that rock. Just drew a box around it!

Superb vlog Paul. I was in Bamburgh and Lindisfarne last year and loved it. Love the pebbles shots and the Lindisfarne shot with the foreground grasses. I would have been tempted to do a portrait as well. Look forward to the next vlog mate.

I like the pano on the first pattern, I feel it fits the pattern better, though the square is great. The square crop on the pebble shot is wonderful and helped draw my eye into the largest of the pebbles. I think I would've had a squirrel moment (movie UP ref) with the rainbow.

Some gorgeous images Paul, loved the textures (square crop with that yellow pebble was just superb). I thought for a moment you would shoot a vertical image of Holy Island using the natural 'V' in the grass as a frame (just below your finger at 15.47) but I think your final image was much better than that anyway. 😂 Have a great week Paul 🙏🙏🙏

Lovely images, all of them. Maybe I missed it but did you focus stack the first three images or were they sharp enough with the focus on the middle? The golden colored rock image was by far my favorite!

@@colintraveller haha I have numerous every time I go out but it’s usually a case of dog walkers etc coming over to ask what you are doing.
