Cactus isn't the best u can have. It is, indeed, the best early food source, especially if u are looking for veggies to make pierogi. However, it takes some time to harvest a lot of them cuz they are scattered across the desert. The best surface food source is bull kelp. U can grab like 50 kelps at the lunar islands, plant them aligned on the nearest edge and then push them all to a same spot with a boat. Hold spacebar for a couple of seconds and u have infinite veggies. Bull kelps regrow in 3 days regardless of the season, and their spoil time is 10 days too (20 inside icebox)

You can also do the 40 beeboxes shenanigans by just having 6~8 boxes per player and harvesting every other day, especially if you're around base for stuff, as long as it's not Spring bees will just ignore you after a short while and you can move on with your day. Honey also spoils extremely slowly (40 days) so you can stock on it for periods where you don't want to farm and live off them, alternating between Taffy for sanity and raw honey for healing.

Sustainable food late game: 20 Bee Boxes, 20 Kelp fronds, and a Lureplant Boat - For sanity make Jelly Salad, Taffy, or Dried Kelp Fronds - For healing use Beefy Greens, Honey or Honey Poultice - For Hunger, just eat the ingredients raw, it produces so much. Bonus points if you have a pig farm at your base so you can get a stack of meat or more every 20 days

Lureplants are cheaper late game, but combo well with honey and cactus, making pretty much best recipes in the game, jelly salad, and beefy greens... kelp is better than cactus as it can be easily mass produced, growing in 3 days, and can be collected every second, also can be used in crock pot for periogi, and 3 kelp, 1 leagy meat is meatbols, and 1leafy meat, 1 monster meat, 1 honey and 1 berry is honey ham, in late game the lureplant boay will have like 10-30 lureplants, which lets you get hunger, sanity, and hp forever, early game stick to pig farm, farming crops, cactus is kinda underwhelming but its ok, vplt goats etc.. if your in the situation you need to kill spiders to survive to make some cheap meatbols, your not doing too well.

I know I'm not rick so probably not the person you are looking to answer this, but instead of planting a lure plant just place a few bunnymen hutches. They both come out at dusk and night and will instantly fight on sight netting you silk, spider glands, the occasional monster meat if you make it there before the spiders eat it. The best time to loot it would be early morning, that way all the rabbits are inside and the spiders have all just been spawn killed over the night. To summarize, the lure plant will eat the spiders loot, the bunnymen won't, so just use bunnymen over the lure plant. 6 bunnymen hutches would be absolutely plenty for it to work.

@@grubygrzib6308 I know. if you're using leafy meat as filler for pierogi you're actually being time inefficient. Ice is by far the best filler. even berries can be used as filler and they are much easier to farm than leafy meat.

While Dragonpie is good, it requires a lot of luck to score dragon fruit seeds and from then to grow enough to sustain your pie needs. Meatballs and Pierogi cost less because their ingredients can be farmed easier (monster meat from spiders and hounds, eggs by feeding excess meat to a bird and carrots and mushrooms if not cacti in the deserts).
