Siril 1.2.0-beta1 was just released. Let's check it out! siril.org
== Notes / Corrections ==
-On Windows only, there is currently a bug with Starnet - see the easy workaround near the top of the release notes: siril.org/down...
-With the GHS tool, try picking a symmetry point more towards the right side of the histogram bump after initial stretch as lots of interesting stuff is usually over there to bring out. See the GHS tutorial below for more details.
-I misspoke in the small section about PCC at the end. You can still platesolve inside PCC, it's just that now you can also platesolve separately with the new process (or even in a different program), and PCC will pick that up from the metadata in the FITS header

Great tips for how to use GHT. I was playing with the developer version, for awhile but kept going back to v1.06 - your video prompted me to try this new beta, what a difference! First glance two things I checked on - they must have finally recompiled with current Libraw because Siril now supports Olympus/OMDS OM-1 raw files that it never did (YAY!) I'd guess there may be some other newer raw support in there, too. And it looks like they fixed the swap storage problem (at least on MacOS) so it reads the actual free disk space instead of some crazy low number that would cause it to fail processing for lack of space, when there was plenty left. Just keeps getting better!

If you run each binary from the terminal beforehand, then macOS security will ask you if you allow the binary to run, so it is a good practice to first run the binaries from the terminal to then allow them to run on macOS System Settings, and then set the binaries on Siril, so you'll not have any security warning issues.

You should really be proud of the videos you share and the way you make them. They are a real treasure for completely noobs like me. Any ideas why my stacked photos (taken with my Canon R6) have the RGB not aligned? I've checked your analysis on the stackers, and I've tried in ASTAP and DSS (here I have align RGB selected). Same results. I'm trying to get my first "final' picture and no luck. All horrible 😢

@NebulaPhotos

Hi Fred, unfortunately, there seems to be a bug in the Windows build of this new beta version of Siril. There is a workaround posted towards the top of this post: siril.org/download/2023-02-24-siril-1.2.0-beta1/ that you may want to try out. For the halos issue, Starnet shouldn’t be creating any halos that weren’t already in your data, but it can make them appear more visible since the stars are removed. Once you add the stars back in they shouldn’t be any more noticeable than they were before, and I actually think they can be much easier to minimize without the stars if you are open to using some tools like clone stamp in photoshop or gimp. Cheers, Nico

Apples and oranges. In the other video I was ONLY comparing stacking (preprocessing) capabilities. In terms of actual processing (stretching, background extraction, color correction, etc.), Siril has many features and ASTAP doesn’t really have any. So if you only want to learn one program, learn Siril.

In my opinion, this version is still damp, it slows down a little on individual processes, some menu decisions have become more complicated, for example, the same color calibration in plate solve mode in 1.05 was immediately at hand, now you have to go to the settings first, why? Starnet++ in Windows did not immediately connect to Siril, also with bugs, but the direction of development is correct. The same deconvolution is very good, it remains to work on the noise plugin and there will be a mini Pi

I'm loving GHS, Starnet integration and the much-improved deconvolution tool. The only letdown for me is the noise reduction - it just does not work well at all on colour images. (To be fair, the developers acknowledge that in their documentation). If they can solve that and maybe add some masking options in the future, then Siril will have everything I need.

Camera's are generally more sensitive to green, the red and blue need to be boosted to get a basic whitebalance, when only the green channel is over exposed/clipped the boost in the red and blue channel produces a magenta-ish color, this isn't always noticeable because the highlights generally get compressed but if you apply an algorithm that boosts color in the highlights then the magenta-ish color also gets boosted. Maybe the siril dev's could implement highlight reconstruction like in darktable, it's open source and very effective in fixing over exposed point light sources.

Concerning the pink stars, for what I come for my researches, it's related to a mismatch between bit-rate of the source image files and the resulting stacked image. For example, in my case, I do astrophoto with a Nikon camera which provides 14 bits raw files, but PixInsight's and Siril's stacked images are 16 or 32 bits, By consequences, we get a saturated 14 bits color translated into a soft non-saturated 16/32 bits, which results into that pink.
@shekibobo
@shekibobo Жыл бұрын
Very interesting. Any way to fix it?
@davidforcier4
@davidforcier4 Жыл бұрын
@@shekibobo Never really found a real fix, but my processing steps allowed me to get around the issue. I extract the stars in a separated image while still being in linear mode, and I stretch them just over the point where the pink turn white, but they remains under-stretched compared to the seep-sky image, so they remain smalls. This way has also the benefits to avoid star reduction because under-stretched stars are not as large as the full-stretched ones, so no need to reduce them over :)

I would LOVE to see you make a 'quick and dirty' guide to siril for people that have never processed before. I'm new to this (just bought a seestar s50) and I am scared!

Siril 1.2.0-beta1 does not work under GUI for manual stacking on Windows platform. I had to use the command line to execute the process.

Just discovered this software, its amazing. im able to remove Coma aberrations, this opens the door for a lot of great fast lenses to become excellent astro lenses. One of the best affordable fast 24mm lenses around is a used Nikkor 24mm f1.4g. It would make an awesome milky way lens but there is some coma aberrations in the corners. That was never a dealbreaker for me on milky way shots since the stars are Small, but many people don’t like it. Now you can fix it. I wonder how many other great fast lenses are out there which people have previously overlooked.

[Please note, I'm writing this comment with Sarcastic Mode engaged and a wry smile on my face.] Oh, great: more stuff I can't afford! Yes, the software's free - whoopee - but running it effectively is another matter. So now I can't afford optics, a tube, a mount, or a camera; I also can't afford the monster computer needed to process the images I can't afford to take. (I'm still using a single core desktop PC from 2005 running Windows XP.) I can't afford dark skies, either, because that'd mean buying a car to drive umpteen miles out onto the Yorkshire moors [I'm in the cold, wet north of England and can only afford to run a bicycle these days], so what are my stargazing options? Well, week after week of back garden cloud-dodging misery is too frustrating for words, so let's hear it for vicarious astronomy. Yay. 🙂 It's the best kind. It involves watching videos from guys like Nico on KZbin. No cost, no discomfort, no hassle. Just brew some tea, open a packet of yummy choccy biccies, sit back and relax... The images are always perfect when someone else is taking the time and trouble to create them.😁

Hey, great video as usual. Still waiting for a video on how to process JWST data with only siril and photoshop. It will be very helpful. And thanks again, I'm learning a lot from your videos.

I just bought a Canon EOS Rebel T7 because of one of your videos. I really want to get into Astrophotography. Do I need to learn the basics of photography first? I found a udemy course and enrolled, but it's gigantic. I want to get taking pictures as quickly as I can so I can learn about all of the astrophotography tools because this hobby seems like it has a steep learning curve. Any advice for a complete beginner? I watched your video where you talked about just using a camera and a lens and a tripod. So I bought all of those things. I am just wondering what I should focus on next.

I'm not sure if they changed something in the mean time (final 1.2 version) but you don't have to go to Plate solving first - all is done within Photometric CC.

Sir, would you consider a video on the 'best' and 'easiest' free/paid-for software (packages) to control telescope mounts? Thank you.

Thanks Nico for the informative tutorial. I have tried the noise reduction feature but so far I don't seen any changes in the image. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Have you had a chance to test this?

I am a windows user. I installed the command line version of Starnet and pointed Sirl to it. The Starnet star removal window came up with a blue Execute box. I checkboxed "Recompose stars on completion" in addition to the "Generate star mask" that was already check. Siril crashed when I clicked Execute. This happened again three more times. If I do not check that Recompose box, it doesn't crash. However, the resulting file looks identical to what I had, with stars intact. Has anyone had this experience?

Would you consider a video showing how to make a false color image using duo band filter or tri band filter. like a synthetic hubble pallette using siril to extract the ha and oiii and then combining them.then using photoshop to process the final image. There is no good tutorials on this subject at all. Thanks for the consideration!

Nico, sounds like you are REALLY enthusiastic about this update. Playing with it a bit. Of course, switching between Pixinsight and Siril and then using Photoshop can make you crazy……

Hey Nico, which one is good for processing? Laptop or a desktop? using SiriL or Photoshop or PixInsight. My old windows i3 laptop chokes and is slow. Want to replace and buy one depending on your suggestion. Thanks in anticipation

I'm new to astrophotography and I'm wondering if this software is a replacement for pixinsight? Not keen on paying the license fee for it.
@NebulaPhotos
@NebulaPhotos Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's an alternative. I wouldn't call it a replacement as it doesn't do everything PixInsight does. But if you are new, Siril will give you plenty of options to get started. The things that PixInsight can do that Siril can't are not particularly important for a beginner in my opinion.

I am starting year 3 in this hobby, and the only non-open source software I use is topaz denoise (although siril now has a denoiser so I might not even use that anymore lol) The point is, yes Pixinsight is the king of astro processing, it's well worth the money if you can afford it. But this open source stuff is getting pretty darn good, and you can produce very respectable images with it. Just remember to kick the guys that wrote it some cash every now and then. They do good work.
