It's really reassuring that you took notice of Garageband. A lot of people hate on free apps and software... I don't know why. In one of Mac Miller's interviews, the interviewer guy asked (as a joke) "Hey man, can you hook me up, get me into the music business?" And Mac said "Yeah, I got a guy, etc. etc.,(I forgot the rest of what he said) you can use Garageband..." And the guy just looks at Mac like he was offended by that. (he replied, joking...) "Oh your gonna set me up on that cheap trash." (or something like that) But what he *doesn't* know, is that a lot of his best tracks were created in GB. It just goes to show how ignorant people can really be in regards to music production.
@darkmadder9897

It is the American Capitalist mindset. Folks just (foolishly) refuse to believe that you can get ANYTHING free or low-cost of any substance. This is why Corps like Apple take three dollars worth of plastic and tech and mark it up to three thousand bucks, while the Chinese churn out identical tech at low cost. The thing is, most of these emulations of expensive hardware are essentially identical - it has become increasingly simple to match the frequencies and dynamics of analog. The starving artist seems to be a tradition, so I am GRATEFUL for all the generous developers that have set us free to create, instead of these tools remaining only in the hands of privileged kids with rich daddies...

@@sunscreech it's not that it sucks, GB is limited in certain aspects while fl or ableton are powerful daws that provides you with a vast list of features. You should try it out, the difference between 1.2 and 1.1.3 is the difference between a massive synthesizer keyboard and a broken toy piano that only plays dog sounds. Keyzone Classic (Great quality piano and keyboard samples) AlterEgo (A nice variant of Vocaloid) Harsh Digital Nose (An experimental synth VST, just draw something in a canvas and hear the noise go ballistic) *Effects:* PanCake2 (Really good autopanner) Proximity (As the name states, it creates virtual distance with your music - you can go wild with this.) MeldaProduction MFreeFXBundle (A lot of MeldaProduction's plugins have to be payed for, but you can get the free bundle and it has some pretty great stuff, including MAutopitch, which is a cool autotuner) ValhallaFreqEcho (Pretty Neat Echo effects)

@Si74l0rd
@Si74l0rd 4 жыл бұрын
@@CoolMintMC Start with Cakewalk, everything in the later part of the video will plug into it. Once you've got Cakewalk, hit up KZbin for some basic tutorials, once you've mastered those then you can start thinking about what kind of plug-ins you want for your sound and you can come back to this video again. Plugins are basically anything that does a specific task not already included within your DAW ( in this case your DAW [Digital Audio Workstation] is Cakewalk.) A plug-in could be something like a drum machine, a sampler or a compressor. In the same way you can get pedals to change a guitars input sound through the amplifier, they allow you to add either sounds or extra features to your DAW, where you then sequence and arrange your samples into tracks. Then once your tracks are laid down you can get to work with the magic. If you want your vocal track to have a little extra sparkle there might be a plugin for that. If you want some reverb on your guitar and you don't have it as an option in your DAW, then go grab a plug-in. The reason free plug-ins are great is because there are hundreds, and the not free one's are rarely cheap! Some genres of music might necessitate having dozens of plugins and in some cases, separate software to complement rather than plug-in to the DAW. An example might be a drum machine. While you can create, edit and sequence a beat all within Cakewalk, you may want to use a specialist tool if the complexity you require isn't readily available within the DAW, or to streamline your workflow if you're using multiple monitors. Making music digitally is complex, just as with learning most digital skills. The first time you create a website would be using a program of some sort to create a template that you tweak, then if you're interested and you want to excel you can learn the actual language and create a webpage just typing in Notepad. So too with using a DAW, start out making basic loops and if you're interested and willing to put the time in then the sky is the limit. It's a pretty expensive hobby to make music of any sort ordinarily, but to produce music prior to the nineties would have meant tens of thousands in hardware. Rooms full of racks, recording equipment, usually of the magnetic tape type and monitors (of the speaker variety!) Over time these huge racks have been squeezed down into smaller USB connected hardware devices like the OP-1 and emulated in software. Cakewalk, or any DAW, is basically this. A roomful of racks, synths and recording equipment. So it gives you the potential to create a industry quality product. You add in your samples, be they created on a real instrument or via a plug-in and then you end up with a track you can export. Then you post it to SoundCloud or a similar service and get some feedback from people :)

All of this is amazing and it helps a lot for new musicians getting into it (like me!). I'd love if you could do a video focused on how to use these tools because, as much as they are free, they still need to get learnt, and I know there are surely a bunch of tutorials already around there, but for VCV, for example, there aren't that many tutorials and they aren't very good apart from the basics, so I'd love a huge video, or maybe a small playlist of some videos of you teaching us how these tools could be used in a more causal or starting context. Thanks you so much for this video, it will sure be useful for all of us, young and new musicians out there!!

Tracktion 7 with it's really fast interface is my favourite by far after trying Cubase, Logic and Reaper. It was bought by Mackie but the original creator bought it back a bunch of years ago and restarted development. Now it's quite a kick ass company churning out new versions of it's DAW(s) and synths. T7 is free so not even the "unlimited trial" of Reaper.

Reaper is basically free and its probably my favorite for things like physical instrument and vocal tracking as well as mixing. I use fl studio for everything else though but everything is possible in reaper its just sometimes a bit more work to get things like patterns in it. For plugins honestly the ones that come with reaper are pretty solid. W1 Limiter is also a beast for free

Audacity is awesome for a lot of things and it probably should be in the toolbox of everone who works with audio, -but it's not (meant to be) a DAW, e.g. it'd be quite ineffective and cumbersome to do a full mix in it.-

@attila.m.magyar 5 жыл бұрын
@Michael Smolenkov I didn't say it was impossible, I said it'd be ineffective and cumbersome, but now that I've been thinking about it, most of the things that I do in Reaper can in fact be done in Audacity just as easily. The biggest difference is probably that Audacity "prints" immediately, so it's harder to go back and adjust parameters for effects that one had done several steps before. But that's not very hard to work around in case it's needed, and Audacity is still lightyears more convenient and flexible than e.g. analog, tape based production - if people could make awesome music with that, then it's definitely doable with Audacity. And I shouldn't forget that limitations can often spark creativity. So kudos for Audacity, and I retract the second half of my comment. :-)
