The Best Freeze Dried Backpacker Meals: Based on Data NOT Taste

Today we take a look at those expensive Freeze Dried Backpacker meals. We rate them based on things like, weight, amount of water required to re-hydrate, calories and other things more objective than just taste. Great job Mark. That is one of the reasons I choose Peak Refuel because they do take less water which is huge on long distance hiking. That and that I really liked the taste of everyone that I have tried. ~RVA~

This was REALLY well done Mark. Love it! Peak Refuel got me hooked for the water factor and then ended up being the best tasting too. I wish they would split the portions and the cost in HALF though!! Awesome job Mark!

Hey boys y’all need to save the little packets, store em in a zip lock, then split your freeze dried into freezer zip locks. You can rehydrate them with boiling water in the freezer zip locks and ration out your peak Alfredo or mountain house chicken and dumpling. I’ve been doing it for a while now to save on space and loot.

I always did too! They have come a long way and are super tasty! Even Rugged Mountain Sister likes most of them!! Yes they are $$$ i just pick one up from time to time.

Very interesting and informative video on freeze dried meals. I used those a lot because they are very convenient. I realized how unhealthy these meals are and the cost was high. On trips, I now limit those freeze dried meals to 1 meal a day and the other meals I try to eat other alternative foods like poach tuna/chicken on tortillas or instant oatmeal. Thanks John!! I agree with everything you said!! It just comes down to convenience for me elegiac with the kids! They don't tear me up too much and i don't backpack enough to be eating too many of them!! I like the knorr sides too. They are a little more finicky to rehydrate properly though! Great comparison! Really good data driven. Being a data guy myself I like how you did this. I think the best way to rehydrate the mountainhouse in front of you would be to throw the entire thing in the pond behind you. LOL.

Very informative Mark. Yes, I wish I could eat the Peak Refuels ( I am celiac), they must be so good, from what everyone is saying. That looked very tasty when you ate that. And yes, great info on the calories and energy. We are checking the readywise brand right now to see what they offer. I am usually eating Good to Go brand and the chicken and rice by mountain house.

I have tried these. I knew water was heavy but didn’t realize that it was that heavy. You did not sell it to average person like me about the flavor 😂. You know it’s serious when there is an excel sheet. Our backpack meal is goldfish 😂

The flavors are actually really good in my opinion... but I'm pretty easy to please! Oh ya... i don't mess around when it comes to stats! 😀 That's a valid backpacking meal... and there's such a variety of them now!! Ya i always think my backpack weight isn't too bad... then i add my water and I'm like... UGH!!
