@Briggetyt I mean.... Sega wouldn't be a thing without Sonic, so a bunch of people would notice when a bunch of popular games are just... not there. Also what a lame world to be Isekaid, like instead of ending on a magical world or some futuristic place, You end up on Normal Earth, 2020ish, but some games don't exist.

Microsoft Solitaire Collection is something I'd never think of including in a list like this, but it makes perfect sense. My mom used to play this religiously when I was a kid and even I thought it was fun. Grabbing the attention of someone who has never played a videogame in their life is an honestly impressive feat.

Super Metroid has the single most rewarding learning curve in video game history and I will die on this hill. It's crazy the devs made an game that started an entire genre of environmental storytelling and exploration-based puzzle solving, but sprinkled hints of an entirely different game hidden inside of the first game where the goal is to smash the first game's intended path into a thousand million pieces. It's like a massive rougelike hidden inside of an action-adventure sci-fi epic where each layer of the skill expression iceberg allows the player to progress through the map in a completely unique and satisfying way. You start by doing the 4 bosses in the intended way with the intended items; once you start experimenting with the movement you realise you can reach bosses without some items or you can get some items early; a little deeper and you realise you can reach bosses while skipping quite a lot of items or you can grab quite a lot items early; deeper still and you realise you can begin doing the bosses slightly out of order; deeper still and you realise the order that you do the bosses in is basically optional depending on how good you are; even deeper than this and you start doing Reverse Boss Order runs where you do the 4 bosses in the exact opposite order of what's intended. And doing all of these major skips isn't rooted in ultra-specific 'tricks' either. Instead, how much you can break the game is entirely dependent on the versatility and optimisation of your movement. Sure, you can learn a tech that let's you skip an item or whatever, but that tech you learned can be applied to your general movement throughout the entire game to fly through rooms even smoother. I'll admit that Super Metroid feels clunky these days for newer players and I empathise with those people, but in my eyes it only makes the transition from 'first-playthrough movement' to how incredible samus feels to control once you know what you're doing even more satisfying and is another reason why Super Metroid has the most rewarding learning curve of all time. With lots of speedrun games, the top level gameplay becomes homogenised where players are trying to do the same things and the only difference between them is how successful they are. But in Super Metroid, all of the top players have completely different playstyles and have complstely self-built strats and self-built backup strats for each room for different scenarios around how many resources they have and stuff. It goes so far that I'd say that SM has the most player expression of any speedrun on the planet and it isn't remotely close. The skill curve of SM is like an asymptote where the skill ceiling extends infinitely high and each small improvement has real tangible effects on how you can choose to progress through the game. I truely believe that people who played the game just once only experienced like 20% of what makes Super Metroid so fun, and the fact that those same people say it's one of the best games ever made despite this just shows how impressive it is as an artform.

The only thing old DOOM have that pulls it down is old fps controls, and even then, I think it is fine. Because if you can play it as a modern FPS (which is very easy, GZDOOM and the steam port already does that) it just is an amazing game. Also, Sonic created momentum based platformers, or any game has a focus in going fast and having a goal more about speedrunning and pathing, than it is about just reaching the end of the stage.

I feel like the category should have been called "Not Design Relevant" or something because that better gets his point across as for his point as a whole, I kinda lean on agree with him because only Sonic is Sonic, but then again there are a lot of fan games about that genre + sonic inspired games. But those are typically seen as underrated

Halo 1 was online on PC. It was without a doubt the most influential shooter, single player or online.

I would argue that the Last of Us shouldn't get too much credit for inspiring the last decade of third person gameplay. It's watered down Uncharted. It just took the gameplay from an already popular game and made it less interesting. It definitely did bring about the "man with child" genre and plenty of stuff from a story perspective so it should get credit for that.

Hot take, and I will accept any backlash for this, but Wii Sports was only as significant as it was because it came packaged with one of the best selling console of all time. It’s not a bad game - I had a childhood on the Wii, to say that I _never_ played it would be the most blatant lie in history - but it was quite literally created to be a tech demo for the Wii. And as someone who grew up with somewhat strict parents that needed several weeks notice in advance to let their kid go to a sleepover, I didn’t get to hang out with friends and play local multiplayer games often, which was a big draw of that game. If you compare it to the sequel, I he amount of content doesn’t even come close - Wii Sports Resort was so much more of a finished game. TL;DR Wii Sports was carried by the Wii’s sales, and while was a fun game, would have statically underperformed compared to Wii Sports Resort if it was a standalone game.

I think a lot of the common feeling is that you have it backwards... it was the *Wii* that was carried on the back of *Wii Sports*, and that it was such a unique mainstream success that it existed /only/ as a Wii Sports device for a huge portion of it's playerbase But also yeah Wii Sports Resorts slaps... but it doesn't have any sport in it that felt as good as Wii Sports Tennis, imo.

I’m not a Last of Us hater but the fact that they put that instead of Resident Evil 4 which is the only reason Last of Us exists in the first place is crazy. Every cinematic 3rd person narrative heavy game that ppl hate now all owe their existence to RE4 whether they like it or not.

Coney talking about RPG gameplay as dogshit "I'm here for the story" stuff is so fucking infuriating even if he may be saying it as a joke, there are so many people who genuinely hate playing a genre they constantly go to bat for and it boggles my mind.

real talk solitaire only ever became such a "hit" because it was on the pc. doing solitair with real cards sucks ass. having to shuffle all the time and set up the rows is just miserable when it's not automated by the pc. and i usually love playing around with cards in my hand or rather flip pages of a book than scroll down on a screen, but solitaire can't be considered anything but a pc game

I'm trying to think of games that you WOULD notice if they never existed, and it gets into weird areas. Like honestly mario i don't think I'd notice for a long while, assuming we still did get platformers in general. Pokémon for sure I'd personally notice like day 2 of it ceasing to exist but for an average person, I still think it's had such a huge impact they'd notice faster than most series. Sonic I kinda agree you wouldn't notice, except the music has always banged. I'm struggling to think of other series that have quite as common of an appearance or relation in everyday conversation as pokemon. Minecraft and Fortnite probably. Maybe I'd remember super smash Bros, even though i don't play it anymore just the idea of every Nintendo character in one game sounds too perfect so at some point I'd think "wait I swear there was a game series like that" and I do feel like melee is THE fighting game so I'd hear about some tournament and be like "Something's missing". Actually on a similar note, league of legends and call of duty join the list, maybe counterstrike too.
