Both are fine, but I would personally set it a little lower to be sure it never reaches your max refresh rate. Neither is "better" to use, just comes down to what fps cap keeps your game from potentially reaching your max refresh

Is there a reason the FPS cap is set so low for higher refresh monitors? I know you said it would never output more than the screen can handle but 7FPS for a 144hz monitor seems a bit excessive. I was under the impression that -3fps cap was sufficient. I would really like to see where this FPS cap data came from.
@Panjno5 ай бұрын
You CAN go -3 under refresh, but I tend to follow the Nvidia caps which are auto applied when using ULLM or Reflex. Having it slightly lower than -3 also ensures you will rarely have fps jump over it, potentially leading to that V-SYNC latency increase :)
@Eyevou5 ай бұрын
@@Panjno Ah, it's an nvidia recommendation. -3 is still acceptable unless you continue to get tearing and the reflex numbers are a baseline "everyone" recommendation. Got it. Appreciate the clarification.
@seelamb935 ай бұрын
thanks for ALL your work panjno. one question: i always thought that uncapping your fps will give you the lowest latency, but at the cost of screen tearing (if you are well over your monitors refresh rate). but you mentioned that by capping fps, you can decrease latency as well as lower power & temps. how's that?
@Panjno5 ай бұрын
If a game doesn't support reflex, if your GPU usage is 99-100% it often leads to a big increase in render latency. With a slight fps cap (or in this case, capped with g-sync+ultra low latency) it could slightly reduce GPU usage leading to a decent reduction in render latency in games which do NOT support reflex yet :)
@Jinwuuuxdd4 ай бұрын
One thing to note is if you're already using frame limiters like RTSS (RivaTuner) to limit your FPS below your monitor's refresh rate, having the VSync off will only introduce input lags and thus should be always kept off regardless of your gpu. The guideline should be: FreeSync and RTSS cap below refresh rate? = VSync off FreeSync without FPS capping? = VSync on

Where are the tests and comparisons? Always thought that v-sync and enabled “low latency” mode in nvidia panel adds latency and it was turned off. So, on default settings where v-sync and low latency is turned off - nvidia monitoring shows latency around 5.8 - 6.6ms. But when I turned on v-sync + ultra low latency in nvidia settings and entered the game, the value was already 13.8-14.7ms. And I didn't forget to do the other points from the video, I just didn't describe them
@joaquinbuena85414 ай бұрын
Great video Panjno!. Ive a question. You said that Ultra low latency limits the FPS automatically. But after that, you said to limit the FPS with NCP or RTSS, etc. Does not redundant doing that? Thanks!
@luciamaria63935 күн бұрын
If you have an Nvidia GPU, activate g-sync in the control panel, leave vsync on and ultra low latency mode in the ultra option, which will automatically limit 7fps below the monitor's hertz. inside the game, just leave nvidia reflex on and vsync off.

In another video, you said that for competitive games, you need to turn off everything related to G-sync and VRR, doing this through Nvidia inspector... However, they did not say what to do with Adaptive sync, who has it turned on on the monitor (I always have it on, for example, because it is always too steamy to switch this mode). Or will the method from this video be more universal? + The question remains about the new video about overdrive setting, then why is it at all?) If adaptive sync is turned off in this way. What if I can choose v-sync for 165hz but my game goes with lets say only 100fps? In that case should I use just v-sync set to 165 and let the game run? What is the real point of capping the fps below the monitor's refresh rate if it will always be in range of freesync then? I've tested vsync ON and OFF in cyberpunk with no fps cap but I can literally see no difference when playing the game TLDR my thoughts: Freesync premium pro ON and amd freesync ON in per-game options in amd adrenalin | example - monitor 165hz - use vsync and fps cap to 158 if you can have more than 165hz constant / if your PC cant handle fps same as your monitor's refresh rate, you can try using vsync ON or OFF (depends how its feels for you) with no fps cap

Hey panjno, I was wondering what my fps should be capped at with a 260hz refresh rate

If you've got an Nvidia GPU, using low latency ultra or reflex will auto cap if for you

I cap my framerate in horizon forbidden west with RTSS and it still goes between 74-75 all the time. Is that normal to occur? Happens in all my games btw for the most part. I can feel it though which annoys me (in forbidden west since it’s at 75 compared to my normal cap of 90-95). As for latency, reflex in that game introduces latency according to Nvidia GeForce performance overlay so maybe it’s just bugged in that game? I need a video about frametimes cause feels like mine r always worse than average. (I’ve done all the basic pc stuff like driver updates ect ect too btw). Can’t stand traversal stutter in UE5 games but in every game I cap I can feel it move from 74-75 which shouldt be the case right?
