I spent time in all of South America and Central America and the 3 months I spent in Medellin especially this neighborhood called laurels made me feel like I wasn’t even in a different country. Ive never felt so happy in my life the entire vibe of the people the hustle and bustle was fascinating. I’ve heard if an American buys an apartment in Medellin they are able to get a 5 year visa. I dream everyday of selling my home in the states for 500k buying an apartment in Medellin and just kick back relax and chill. I lived a healthier more balanced lifestyle in Medellin both physically mentally and emotionally. Just a simple walk to a local bakery and enjoying a coffee and pastry making conversation was extremely satisfying. I enjoyed that I walked everywhere I also enjoyed the public transportation. In America if your walking or talking a bus people think your homeless. I highly recommend Medellin Colombia it’s absolutely safe Colombian people are hard working family oriented people. The reason I found Colombia is because I needed dental work that was quoted 75k in the USA I received the same exact procedure in Colombia for under 10k. God bless Colombia. Yeah laureles is beautiful. I stayed at hotel el dorado in laureles. Laureles is where the locals party at. Medellin is beautiful. Second time I went to Medellin I stayed at ciudad de río hotel ibis nice area as well. Can’t wait to return to Medellin

Very good interview. Great questions on your part. Her degree of knowledge and ability to explain the process in detail in English clearly shows she had done this many times. What up Wes!! I'm here in Medellín this time with my third son. I am here for 9 days and second time staying in Envigado in an AirBnB. As you can see, I'm slowly migrating towards the apartment/house living for when I finally retire here (not for another 10-15 years probably). THE MOST IMPORTANT THING to understand is that real estate agents in Colombia are NOT your friend. They represent the seller and want to suck the buyer dry. The Colombian imobiliarias are essentially a monopoly as well and have really screwed over Colombians im general, and they are the sole reason why its so difficult for Americans to get housing in Colombia. If youre buying property in Colombia then you need a lawyer that has experience in helping foreigners buy property in Colombia, it's basically a requirement. The agents will tell you no, but that's only so they can more easily rob you. If you're in manizales i have contact with a very good lawyer that will make sure you're safe. Remember, Colombia has a culture of aprovechando la gente!

the seller always increases the price because they know the potential buyer will make an offer at least 30 percent lower, so it's very important to make offers and never settle for the asking price ever, if you pay the asking price, they will be calling you a "marrano" a sucker and your reputation will go down and they will laugh at you as well all the marranos in town.

You need to go through a brokerage if you don’t already have a visa,cedulla and bank account that is registered with DIAN. I find it incredible Colombians need to get approved by DIAN (IRS of Colombia)to get a bank account.And if you transferred your funds from your bank abroad to the Colombian owners ,they are in charge of registering your property.A brokerage is obviously the most intelligent way to pay for the property.

America has changed people could never understand how much things have changed. People have isolated themselves in there well manicured lawn homes nobody knows their neighbor. Dating is the most horrible thing ever. Colombia is so different the vibes the chemistry those people know how to have fun. People there unfortunately have limited means to prosper financially but it doesn’t effect their happiness. Family and fun is what matters to them. That’s how life was in Brooklyn in the 70s and 80s nobody had nothing but people took care of each. Money and technology ruined everything.

I bought two properties in Pobaldo. One for Airbnb and the other for my personal use. The climate, restaurants, nice people, and chill culture. If you are an American and want to retire, Medellin is amazing location. 2.5-3 hours to Miami, 5.5 hours direct flight to NYC. So you are never too far from your families and cost of living difference is significant.

Buyer doesn't pay any extra fees tho, it's paid by the seller. And the closing costs are normal with any real estate transaction. It's about finding someone trustworthy and who speaks English but if you have family who can help do that

Interestingly, I just watched a video on illegal immigration over the Yuma AZ border and the local sheriff said the majority of crossers right now are from Ecuador and Columbia, escaping violence. I wonder what is driving that, drug cartels? Kind of ironic, where as Americans and other foreigners are seeking to live in Columbia right now. Maybe you could do a segment on that perspective. The geography of Medellin, in my inexpert opinion, limits its opportunities for growth for the same reasons you enjoy it currently. Personally I view Valle Cauca as more likely for expansion, though I agree human geography trumps terrain.

I went to the records registrar to learn who is officially listed as the owner of a property I am willing to occupy under an Anticres arrangement. The registry record lists 3 owners. Juan 50% Maria 25% and Lisa 25%. Juan, Maria, and the Lawyer handling the paperwork told me that it is ok for only Juan and Maria to sign because that makes majority ownership. I refused to sign without Lisa (or her representative) also signing. I believe that the law is the same worldwide: ALL owners (or their representatives) must sign any contract that affects the use of a property. They also acted indignant when I pushed them for straight answers about why Lisa couldn't sign. I asked, "Does she know about his deal? Is she even alive? Do you mind if I visit her?" WAS I SMART TO WALK AWAY, OR JUST BEING A PAIN IN THE ASS GRINGO? ESP: Fui al registrador de registros para saber quién figura oficialmente como propietario de una propiedad que estoy dispuesto a ocupar bajo un acuerdo Anticres. El registro registral enumera 3 propietarios. Juan 50% María 25% y Lisa 25%. Juan, María y el abogado que maneja el papeleo me dijeron que está bien que solo Juan y María firmen porque eso hace que la propiedad sea mayoritaria. Me negué a firmar sin que Lisa (o su representante) también firmara. You'd be mad to enter into a property contract without being fully satisfied in all aspects. Any indignancy on agents' or vendors' parts is a clear red flag.

Your the smartest guy in the world don’t ever think your arrogant for protecting yourself especially in a place with limited legal resources like we are use to in the states. If all three people don’t sign the one person who didn’t sigh will have you thrown out of that property in less than a month. I wouldn’t know who to trust there. This is why I’m probably going to rent for a year or two. Apartments are super nice for 700$ or less a month
